Show #79: Party At Dylan’s, Franklin Park

Low Profile live at Dylan Mohle’s Halloween Party
Saturday Oct 29th
this was our third time playing a Mohle Halloween Party. each one has been much different but all were fun. this time we played in the basement. it was a nice intimate setting.

so we practiced at 1:30. then met up at 6:30 to load up and head on over to Mohles. we picked up and brought Marc Williams with as roadie for this one.

as soon as we pulled up we were bombarded by lil girls aged 9 and under attacking us with plastic knives and swords. it was hysterical. they were having a slumber party.

so Mohle had the kegs going right when we got there and we pretty much started drinking right away. i attempted and failed to start up the fire. hahahaha. so Mohle came over and held a torch to the middle and got it super hot and within an hour the thing was blazing.

we were being begged to hurry up and set up by our adoring fans for over an hour. once we set up, they quieted down a lil bit but then begged us to start playing. one actually began to cry cause she thought they’d have to go to bed by the time we started. i even heard 1 lil one say to another ‘i didn’t know you had a band for your party.’ as if we were just there to play for them. they were pretty adorable and a lot of fun. i turned on the PA and let them talk into the mics for like 10 minutes to hold them over till we were ready to go. hahahahhaa.

so we stalled and stalled but finally began playing. we did a big Misfits medley to start things off. i don’t know the order but we played all of these for sure:

Halloween
20 Eyes
Lost In Space
Astrozombies
Vampira
All Hell Breaks Loose
Horror Hotel
Ghouls Night Out
Spinal Remains
Hybrid Moments
Bullet
American Nightmare
Violent World
Last Caress
Day of the Dead
We Bite

i put my mic down for the lil ones to sing into and i queued them up to sing the chorus parts to We Bite and they had so much fun singing along. i think we may have played Halloween twice. then i know we played:

King of the Hill theme
Folsom Prison Blues (Johnny Cash)

then we took somewhat of a long break. started drinking pretty heavy at that point. slamming jello shots and more good cold keg beer. Satan slammed some shots of Wild Turkey with Eric Mohle. fucking disgusting. then the kiddies came back and begged us to start playing more. they only got to watch a few of these songs since it was getting pretty late and it was bedtime for them. we started off with some repeat Misfits songs and then we actually played a few Low Profile songs.

Halloween
Spinal Remains
American Nightmare

Arnold Palmer and Katie Holmes
HG
Hotboxed
Excited to Die
the Will to Kill

Lost in Space

i remember Dylan asking us to play something they could mosh to and Satan went into Spinal Remains which kinda has that slow rockabilly beat to it. u can’t really mosh or get crazy to that. so i think Rob called out Excited to Die then.

Eric Mohle sang Lost in Space the second time around. i don’t even think anyone was in the room besides us four. it was pretty fun and amazing. he sang it real well and definately knew it. for doing that with no practice, i was pretty shocked it sounded that good. so Eric, you’re invited to come to any show and jump up and we’ll do that with u live. it’d be fun as hell.

me and Rob ended up loading out together leaving Satan behind to keep drinking.
hahahaha. it was a real fun night.

-so props to Rainbow Brite for having a great costume.
-knee high socks are hot.
-big up to mike kaufmann aka mike myers and tony perry aka scooby doo
-the Mohles know how to throw a good party. here is a picture of Eric and Eric. and a picture of Eric Erik and Eric.
-thanks to Marc for carrying my amp.
-those kids were a blast to play for. heres me and Satan with the crew. i even got the one to throw up the horns. and check out Jordan giving Satan the bunny ears. what a cutie.

Show #60: Party At Dylan’s, Franklin Park

GET THE LIVE RECORDING HERE

My god, what a night. I was nervous about this event for a while before hand but now looking back I can see that it was a total success and not a single thing really went wrong.

Joe from Squared Off (here, in mask, with Rob, Hilger and some little kin) was nice enough to provide the use of his van and some assistance of lugging gear around for the day. The night before he came over and we swilled some beer 40s (Milwaukees Best Ice and Old Style). He showed up the next day at 3 oclock. We grabbed some gear from my crib and went to Rob’s to grab all his drums, the amps and the PA. I knew there would be mad kegs at the party but you know I’m always prepared: I ‘stole’ a cooler that had been chilling in the back yard of my condo for over a year and cleaned it up the night before, and filled it with 2 King Cobra 40s and a 6 pack of the worst beer I’ve ever seen in my life, ‘Golden Anniversary Beer’. We stopped for some ice at Shell on the way to Dylans (of course I took 2 bags even though I only paid for one). We got to Mohles and there were just a few people there including Dyland and Jim Washburn. We loaded in and Joe roughly set up Rob’s drums. I set up the PA and amps and got the 4-track ready. Hilger showed up in a little bit and Rob showed up a little bit after that. By the time Rob showed up it was probably about 5:30. Dylan had a whole spread of awesome food set up for when people got there, but he let me mange early since I was starving (plus I’m ‘in the band’). I scarfed down some mostocholli and BBQ chicken wings which was warmed up in the microwave by Dylan’s mom. I went back outside and people were starting to drink a lil although there was still very few people there. I then went inside to get ready. I stuck my head in Dylans shower and gelled/moussed up my hair and combed it forward into a mighty devilock. I put some black paint around my eyes then to top it off I poured some of my all natural fake blood into my mouth and let it drain out over my chin and down my body and shirt. When I decided I looked scary enough I went back outside. The look was still not complete so I poured more blood in my mouth and also over the back of my neck. It was dripping everywhere very nicely and I was content.

We played a short set for basically no one and then took a break. We later jammed a bit more but were cursed as the opening band and hardly anyone saw us. But in the end it was worth it as far as I was concerned since we were not rushed and could really relax up there.

I’d like to give a quick shot out to Dylans girlfriend Jenny. She was in my ‘homeroom’ (although we called it something else and now theyve done away with it completely) in high school and was never a cunty bitch like alot of other hot chicks were to me in high school. She worked her ass off for days before decorating and getting shit ready and thoughout the party truly played the part of hostess to a ‘T’. I want to thank her for all her hard work as I defiantely appreciated it and everyone there did even if they didn’t acknowledge it.

Well we played the obligatory millions of Misfits songs and a bunch more. We opened, closed and played one other time the song ‘Halloween’. There were some little kids there. When we first started, and after we took our little intermission, they said how ‘it was very loud and I was singing too close to the mic’. Future sound engineers, let me tell you. But strangely, as the show went on, they started to love it, dancing all around and screaming uncontrollably thoughout the songs, during every song! After some convincing, we got em to talk into the mic a little bit which was great. Check em hear throwing the goat — the vampire one is only in 2nd grade! Low Profile probably ruined her for life. My girlfriend showed up in her costumer: which was her idea, but I helped engineer it and also added the blood. Click the pic and youll see what I mean — bloody tampon. Heres another one. Alot of people seemed to be disgusted by it, but I was so taken with its originality that even now it hasnt dawned on me that its gross. The smoke machine, which I had brought to only 1 other gig (the Mutiny — but I put too little smoke juice in it and it was real weak) kicked ass as I dumped about a liter of smoke juice in there before we played, it was cranking for a long time. I even taped the remote control to my mic stand so I could jam on it during songs real quick here and there.

Well at some point Tony Perry asked to use our PA. I told him he should have asked in advance but it ended up that they had their own. Tony complained that his was a ‘piece of shit’ but he had massive speakers that were at least 4 1/2′ high! It was loud as hell so I didn’t understand why he wanted mine and still don’t. I’m just happy I didn’t have to provide it. Tony was dressed up as ‘Fat Elvis’ and his band Triple Lindy (the remanants of Out of Time) was pretty decent.

Well during this time I was drinking some keg beer and taking down Jello shots. Jenny was carrying around trays of em and I had at least 3. I started buzzing pretty hard for whatever reason.

At some point I cracked a King Cobra and later some Golden Anniversary Beer (when I saw matt boyle of carmapgin armando swillin an old style, I knew he was down with the bad beer — so i had to hook him up with one). The fake blood was mad sticky all over me and the top button on my only 3 times worn new camo pants busted off. I was getting pretty hammered. The other bands played well past midnight and it got a little blurry. Hilger used to be in a band called Socially Unnaceptable with 2 of the members of Campaign Armando back around 95 or 96 so he demanded I take this pic of their ‘reunion’. Socially Unacceptable I used to go see before I even owned or ever picked up a guitar, so go figure. They were real cool, musically and personally.

Around 1 am most people were gone and so was the beer (4 half and quarter barells). I went down into the basement and started eating mad cold bbq wings, i was eating the meat off in 1 bite each and tossing the bones into a massive heap. then i crammed a massive cold beef sandwich down my throat. i ended up staying up to 5 am and getting completely sober. i wanted to do laundry right away cause i didnt know if it would be bad if that shit dried all over me. my hair was greasy as fuck and that black eyemakeup is a bitch to get off. ill admit that this review is a little weak but i wrote a ton that night then didnt touch it for a while, now its monday night and i figure i better fucking post it. some times too much happens at the best shows and its hard to write it all down. this isnt too bad.

well looks like every 5 years so dylan, thanx again and well see you in 2008.

Show #20: Party at The Long’s, River Grove

Another party: we were all heavily intoxicated. We got there long before anyone else, cleared our area, set up, sound checked and commenced to drink. Soon the crowd showed up and I became hysterical and soaked in sweat. The crowd was very receptive and at one point I moshed into some people, soaking myself and Leo Toal with a cup of beer. I have a great picture of us jamming and Jason Johnson hugging me and saying something into my ear. Not only do I not remember what he said to me, I don’t even remember that happening. We played on and off for a long time. Later there was some threat of cops but we all hid and turned off the lights and got very quiet. I also remember beating on a younger kid who kept talking during this ‘quiet time’. It was fun. We played the next morning before we packed up. At about 4 AM me and Hilger poured the huge basin holding the ice for the keg (and at this point many other foreign objects and substances) out the window 2 stories down. I said I wanted to help clean but I really just wanted to pour it out the window. It was very nasty and needed to be poured out, but also was fun.

Show #14: Guitar Center [CANCELED], Chicago/River Grove

This was a very eventful day. We had set up this free show in advance through a guy named Matt who is actually the founding member of Low Profile and also the guitarist of Eternal Bliss. He had started another band at the time which was called Union Jack. They had Dave on bass (also from Eternal Bliss) and the drummer from Yellow Snowman (since replaced), Randy. He asked me about 2 months in advance to play this show and I readily agreed. I checked back with him multiple times and again about 2 days before the show and he assured me that everything was AOK. We were also supposed to play with a band called No Style who was actually Rob’s original band. We got down there and were sitting outside with No Style. I volunteered to go inside and find out what was happening. I told the first person I saw inside about my situation and he asked me to wait while he got Jose, the manager, to help me. I waited about 5 minutes and decided that that was long enough. I boldly walked into the door marked ‘Employees Only’. I wandered around for a bit and found ‘Jose’ and 2 others in a small office. I had never met Jose before but I had a feeling that this was him. Jose was trying to explain and one of the others started freaking out and kept repeating that I could not (should not really; I was already there) be in this office. I ignored him and addressed Jose but he would not stop and then grabbed me by the arm and attempted to escort me outside. At this point I realized that the show was not going to take place but I was also trying to deal with the idiot grabbing me. I shoved him and told him not to touch me. He kept complaining and I simply told him to shut up. At this point, Jose said that maybe we had better talk someplace else. I agreed and when outside the office he explained that he had tried to call his only contact — Randy — and tell him that the show had been canceled. He never got through to him. I was pretty infuriated. I went outside and explained and Rob volunteered to have the show in his basement where we rehearse. A lot of people were beginning to show up and it would have been a major disappointment for them and us if the show could not go on. We also asked No Style if they would like to play and they agreed.

We went back to Rob’s and cleaned the place out. The whole basement was filled. We tried to go back and forth song for song with No Style but they weren’t very tight and eventually we ended up just playing by ourselves. This is one of the first shows I can remember where I really went for broke. I got wild and scared the crowd as we whipped through a lot of covers — Gorilla Biscuits, ‘Hope’ by Descendants/Sublime and ‘Nike a-Go-Go’ by the Misfits during which I broke a string and got very crazy. I insulted the crowd very often and rapped ‘Knocking Boots’ by the Candyman and the crowd dug it. Right before we started, Union Jack and their crew showed up. I don’t remember if Matt asked to play or not, but I told him that he had better leave. He did so promptly, and the show went on.

Show #12: Party at Gimson’s

I really can’t say much about this one to prevent anyone from being incarcerated. I was very intoxicated and we played in the garage and it rocked. They seemed to like the fast shit although I knew that they were all total rock and rollers. Their dad came out and I played a little bit of ‘Night Moves’ by Bob Seger for him and they all loved it. I played some of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Wish you Were Here’. But we mainly just jammed instrumental and improvised. It was fun and the keg never seemed to get dry. I was a wild night.

Show #11: Party at Suba’s, River Grove

Tony Suba’s basement has a very low ceiling and tile floors so it is extremely reverberant and will blow your eardrums everytime. This was a surprise party for his girlfriend, Debbie. We waited in the dark and everything and flipped on the lights and jammed. I remember that we opened with ‘Outspoken’. The funny thing about Debbie and her friends is that we’re playing this loud long and I’m yelling and shit and they act like its totally normal and a pop song or something. They genuinely like us or at least they have me tricked.

The best was when at one point Rob glanced a stick off his nose. He started bleeding and then blood was everywhere. He kept playing and I didn’t know about the bleeding since I’m singing and my back is to him. We finish one song and I talked for a moment and then I introduced the next one and tried to start it. Rob yells for me to wait to I talk a little more. I still haven’t turned around and seen the blood bath which Rob is attempting to control. He was also drinking and it must have thinned his blood. I go to start again and he yells for me to stop. I got a little pissed at this stalling and I turn around and there’s blood everywhere: on his face and clothes, drums, sticks. We finished the set and he drank some more and got really goofy and lightheaded probably due to the blood loss. I took him home and he said that his folks thought he got into a fight or something and he was totally loopy and tried to take a leak in the closet or something when his mom stopped him.

I met Joe from Cyribiss that night and we traded the guitar back and forth all night and played Metallica and Slayer riffs. At one point he played some Manowar which is obscure but the riff was crazy. It was fucking great. It takes a special person who is like myself and enjoys jamming so much. Hilger said this about him and I totally agree. When we met him, he’s wearing red contacts and looks like Kirk Hammett from Metallica who he clearly idolizes. I showed him my Jackson and I showed him my Strat. I asked his if he wanted to play it and I handed him the guitar and he immediately goes to like the 23rd fret and rips this insane metal solo. Fucking awesome. At one point later that night when we were trading the guitar back and forth, the guy who lives upstairs was with us partying and he’s watching us jam and he says to turn it up. We had the amp set real low cause it was late. Then he demands that we turn it up and how he owns the house which is true. So we cranked it!

Show #7: Party at Dylan’s, Schiller Park

This was super wild. I cannot tell about everything that happened at this party but it was huge and crazy and obviously Halloween and never was broken up by the cops. We played a long set and then another with Farmer. We got to take breaks now and then like rockstars. My amp power got kicked out once or twice. We played ‘Pathetic Individuals’ last as we have many times and I remember feeling very nauseated. I was playing and contemplating my options. Stopping, collapsing, puking or even possibly puking and playing. The last was my favorite and I even leaned over to avoid splashing my guitar with vomit. Nothing came out though. I sweat so much and quite often I would let myself fall into the crown and they would grab me and hold me up and cheer me on. I was so hammered and it was a really fun crowd.

Pie in the Sky was supposed to play but couldn’t since Washburn went to see All that night. A band called 12 Gauge played and they rocked. I didn’t know any of them but the singer Tony Knight wore a shirt with a red 666 on it which is cool by me. They covered a Rage Against the Machine song and it seemed flawless. They also covered Sepeltura and other bands. They were very tight. I was scared since their faces were painted and it was dark and blacklights were on. For a minute I thought maybe it wasn’t real. Farmer sang “Where Eagles Dare” with them and it was a little fucked up but still great. The guitarist had the same pedal as me (XP100) and used it perfecetly on the solo for the Rage song.

As always Pie in the Sky or what remaining members were there took advantage of the situation and stepped into a room full of eager people and played without Washburn. It was OK and they used 12 Gauge’s equipment. Somehow Tony Perry had his bass though. I was in another room and I heard them play “Linoleum” by NOFX and I ran in and sang the song. It was cool since I used to jam that with Washburn and the band when Perry wasn’t around at the practice space. I screamed so hard and fell on the floor and I saw only stars and spots. It was very fucking intense.
