Show #65: Lyons Den, Chicago

Well we played here once before last December. Lyons Den is a nice venue becasue its very loud and has good sound. Last time they recorded us too because they have a cd burner hooked up to the board. Well I was counting on this so I brought another blank CD because getting that recording is very important to me. I got there good and early and loaded in. I approached the sound man and another guy who well call ‘the bouncer’. He even almost looked like the sound mans brother. I asked them about it and they said they couldn’t do it, and to ask Darius why. Darius is a british guy that runs Criminal IQ records and also works for/runs ‘punk rock night’, a promotion company that books friday nights at Lyons Den as well as some other clubs not in Chicago. Darius wassnt there yet but they said he would be soon. In the meantime I was chillin with ‘the bouncer’ and the sound man by the sound booth. ‘The bouncer’ was listening to demos that bands had sent him (they were trying to play weeknights, not on ‘punk rock night’). Now we listened to one band that was some kind of country. Now I’m not too much into country personally. But this guy was basically listening to a demo with me standing there (listening thru the PA) and he was dissing it! Thats very unprofessional. Why would you do this in the 30 min. before a show anyways? Wouldn’t you do this at your house privately? I joked along like ‘yeah….they, like…suck, right?’. I couldnt believe the guy was going to be unprofessional like this and let me, some jerk off he basically didnt know, sit there and rip the bands with him! I was trying to be nice so I could convince them to record me since they had already said they hadnt. This was only the start of the unprofessionalism I would experience that night from many different representatives of the Lyons Den.

Darius then arrived. I asked him why and he explained that another organization called www.destroyyourradio.com was recording the show on DAT for their site. They only had 1 output from the board with which to record. Heres another instance of bad professionalism. Many bands, espically those that have never dealt with people like this, think they are at eveyrones mercy, etc… and try to go along with everything. My point is that I should have my permission asked before you broadcast my music on the net. Let me also now say that I dont give a shit, and dont need to give permission but thats not the point. Other bands would be like ‘free promotion! wow!’ and agree to everything. Well in this game you dont just agree to whatever bullshit you are offered. Anyways, I didn’t want to cause any more waves with anyone and said fine. I was thinking that I didn’t much care if I was broadcast on some website, because obviously this meant waiting weeks to hear it for probably a short amount of time, possibly having the material get ‘lost’…I’m the type of person that wants to get my own hardcopy immediately. By my own plan, I could have the set edited and ready to go on my own site by the end of the next day. I dont trust others with unique copies of this that no one else has. I explained this to Hilger and he echoed my secret sentiments right away. He said fuck that website, tell them you dont care about it and you want a CD. Then I knew I had to do it, since we both agreed.

A note about www.destroyyourradio.com. This is run by the guys from a Downers Grove band called Destroy EVerything. A long time ago I got their cd for free with an order from RElevation Records (they have nothing to do with them). BEing a free CD I didnt care for it, but for whatever reason I actually put it on…and it was really good! I ended up doing some reasearch and couldnt believe when I found out the band was local! I wrote an email to them and corresponded with one of the members and they were really cool. I got my tattoos from a place in Downers Grove and it ended up they not only knew him, but were good friends and had even played gigs at his shop! So nothing I’m saying here is intended in disrepsect for this band. They are a serious band that tours nationally and has been playing for a long time. It seems they even run www.destroyyourradio.com for nothing just as a service to the local scene, and I’ve even checked out the site and its a really cool format and works great, and I heard some good tunes from bands I never heard of which is the whole point. I dont like how this was presented to me as if I am expected to OK any possibly involvement with audio recordings of my group. We are not a band in the race for maximum exposure expecting 100 people to buy our albums. I personally dont give a fuck for that whatsoever. The people that are going to come to a Low Profile show or buy an album are going to do so because of direct or indirect involvement with members of the band personally. I have learned this over a 6 year period of recording and playing shows with the group. I am not one to count out promotion out of some ‘principle’ or anything like that either however. I respect these guys because of a body of work that I have seen to be professional and quality in nature. Also my own limited personal encounters with the band members. The bottom line is that a) I should be asked before having my recordings shipped off for some website, b) My first priority is with my own hardcopy of the music. I know personally that a number of bands slated to be played on the site are unaware of this entirely. Im not saying this as a threat, but you would think that people would take more precautions then to broadcast copywritten matierial without expressed written consent or at least verbal acknowledgement. The band themselves may have little to nothing to do with any of that and I dont claim they do. I’m not going to take ‘no’ for an answer when I’m told I cant be recorded for myself but can be recorded for someone else. In the end my persistance and willingness to be threatend and berated worked out and I pulled it off.

So I approached Darius about it again. Now I was getting annoying but figured it was worth it for the CD. We’ve played many many shows and dont get recorded regularly. Since I knew they had the capacity to do it, I can’t pass it up. I told him I didn’t care about the website and wanted my own CD still. I admit I was taking it a bit far but in retrospect it was well worth it since I got what I wanted. I had to pay a bit of a price for it but that price was small overall. Anyways, me and Darius were standing next to the sound booth and he finally agreed and told the sound man to disconnect the DAT and just CD-R us. The sound man agreed. Darius was getting pissed at me now because he said he had to run out before the show started (when he would return) and also that he had just come from a funeral. Well he told the sound man to do what I wanted and then left the club. As soon as he was out of eyesight/earshot, the sound man went into an extended rant on me personally and how i was a ‘dick’ and ‘this is bullshit.’

Time to sidetrack about sound men. I work for the phone company. I am part of the IBEW which is a global union. I’m not saying I work hard but its what I consider to be a ‘legit’ job. Who am I to decide? Fuck you! You must be a sound man. Rob is a graphic designer. Hilger makes/installs conveyer belts. These are ‘real’ jobs. I’m sure many of you reading this have ‘real’ jobs. BEING A SOUND MAN IS NOT A ‘REAL’ OR ‘LEGIT’ JOB!. Getting to hang out in a club and listen to punk rock and get paid is cake. I dont want to hear you bitch or moan ever. Also, I have a degree in sound engineering. This is a bachelor of arts that qualifies me to do similar work. So I know quite well (or good enough at least) the ins and outs,e tc…. My fucking point is that this guy was super put out to have to do something he didnt’ want to do (though his boss (Darius) told him to) and now I was the scapegoat. He was making like his fucking job was terrible and whatnot. My brother is also in the IBEW — he works for ComEd and reads meters. He was to walk almost 20 miles a day sometimes. Also in the freezing cold of winter. Now THATS a hard job. When you can drink beers at work and get paid in cash, this is not a REAL job. I dont have pity for how hard you work. I just dont give a fuck.

Well this asshole starts going off on me becasue I had pestered Darius to do what I wanted and now he had to do it. I told him that I had been cordial with him the whole time and there was no reason to call me a dick or anything else. He told me how ‘it was a free country, and thats the reality of it!’. I explained that while I could call everyone a dick, sometimes I choose not to because it serves no purpose, and you dont have to be that way with everyone you meet when its unwarranted. I made the mistake of using an analogy that ‘you dont have to call everyone, or you friends or someone you want to be friendly with, names for no reason’. He told me that ‘we arent friends!’. Listen, I’ve punched many people in the mouth for different things and I’ve been punched and kicked and choked for many more reasons. I’ve been called worse and I’ve done worse then discuss it with people that werent nice to me. I dont mean that to brag, I’m just saying that asking why he was being so mean isnt my usual plan of attack. BUt I was really shocked at how pissed he was about unplugging the DAT and plugging in the cd burner for our set. I couldnt conjure up any anger, I was really confused by his wild name calling,etc… I eventually just handed him the blank CD and left him the fuck alone with his bitterness.

Well I had enough of him and walked away. I lounged around before the show and tried to forget about it. I had a few drinks and then the first band started. They were called Remember the Tiger Tales. They had 2 guitars and 1 was the singer. They were total garbage. They played like they didnt give a fuck and it sounded that way. They were using clean guitar tones and it sounded like shit. I can listen to lots of noisy bands, etc… but this was trash and they knew it. They knew they sucked and they were obviously trying to play off of it like it was their gimmick. I listened to 1 1/2 songs and went back to the bar.

Hilger had seen this Misfits cover band called Last Caress over the summer. I had also heard their name around everywhere and Hilger said the show was great. Well some dude came up to us in the bar and gave us flyers for a Last CAress show at Cals. I am pretty obessed with the Misfits and weve been known to play upwards of 10 covers at certain drunken shows. So this guy said his name was Scott and he was the singer. The thought immeidatley came to mind — I was just meeting this guy right there — to have him come up and sing with us on a cover. We told him we would suprise him and he agreed. He was a really nice guy and it was an exciting prospect.

Well we went on 2nd. The set was fucking flawless if I dont say so myself. WE busted out some obscure older songs that had never been recorded live before. We played ‘Astro Zombies’ with Scott from Last Caress 2nd to last and the crowd fucking dug it big time. He was definately right on. After the show he had the balls to tell me that we could have ‘been more creative’ with our song choice. I like that kind of a challenge and next time I’m going to learn a super rare obscure song to challenge him back. This guy is a master musician. Last, we covered a Smear Campaign song ‘Hulk for PResident’. This was our 2nd show with Smear Camp, we met them about exactly a year earlier when booked with them at the Fireside. As many people know, we have a thing for covering our friends bands songs and playing them live when booked with them. ITs always a huge surprise and they freak out and its really fun. We rehersed this one for weeks in advance and I called Matt on stage and he sang it, fucking priceless.

This leads to yet another beef that was created that night. Before the 1st band played, someone put up these huge paper posters which were blown up photos of a band rehersing all over the stage. They were on every monitor and like 3 on each mic stand. I assumed they were some shit for the 1st band but started to wonder. They were like silly poses and stuff. I thought about it for like 10 seconds then decided I would not play with this bullshit representing me. We play pretty serious music and I’m espically serious person (musically at least). My words are important to me and I’m not trying to project somekind of joking bullshit ass music. I violently ripped the posters down and threw them on the ground below.

While we played our set I had a first. I actually got bottles thrown at me. Once again the Lyons Den security was completely lacking here. The bottles continued without stopping thru the set. My hair mostly blocks my vision when I play and I cant see the crowd so well. One bottle hit me in the shoulder. One whizzed by my head I was told and at least 1 more hit the stage in front of me. They werent throwing bottles at low profile, they were throwing them at satan165. Thats understandable, since I shake shit up like a rock tumbler. I am a true fucking revolutionary. Im among the elite dynamic musicians you have ever seen. I would be salty too if I was upstaged by a wild and awesome musician. Near the end of the set I addressed it on the mic and said that they throw terribly and called them ‘bitch ass tricks’. You can DL the recording and hear for yourself. Strangely the bottles stopped after that. Funny that no one approached me to knock me out after the gig, looks like its easier to throw bottles at someone who is not paying attention then punch a dude out that you dont like when hes in front of your face. Fucking fags. IF youre reading this why dont you fuck yourself in the ass. Pussy ass bitches.

After the show I was handing out free CDs like always. One guy was giving me some props and I gave him a CD. Then he said how he was friends with teh 4th band and why did I rip those posters down. I saw the possibility of getting rolled on right there and broke out back with a posse by the bar.

So far, Ive annoyed Darius, had the sound man call me a ‘dick’, had bottles thrown at me and had this guy almost threaten me as well for ripping down those gay posters. Well I wasnt done for the night! Oh no! It keeps on!!!

I had the bright idea to get my own burned cd from the cd player in the sound booth real quick rather then fuck with the asshole sound man again. I looked and seen a cd burner. I know it was because I saw the ‘finalize’ button on it. Now how many cd burners could they possibly have back there? this had to be the one. I hit ‘eject’ and the music playing over the PA inbetween bands stopped. My heart froze and I think I might have audibly said ‘oh fuck’. The sound man whipped around (he was on stage micing shit or whatever for the next band) and he seen me dead on. There was no place to hide. He raced down and came straight at me. He grabbed me by teh shirt and went off with a bunch of what I call ‘big talk’. MEaning that he never did do any of the things he so earnest promised me. Such as: killing me, beating me up, etc… HE said I was a ‘pussy’ and a ‘bitch’. I felt stupid since I did stop the music but didn’t much like this grabbing of my shirt thing. I stuck my face so close to his our noses touches and kept repeating ‘what are you going to do?’. AFter about 3 times he let me go and walked away. Then I hit in a crowd before ‘the bouncer’ bounced me for fucking with gear.

Well then I made my wild appeal to Darius, who had already had enough of me for the night. First I tried to build my own case. I explained how right after he had walked away before the show, the sound man called me a dick and whatnot. He was a little shocked I must say. (He didnt know about me stopping the cd). Then I explained how I was very silly and did a very silly thing with the cd player. But I said how he grabbed me and threatened me. HE said not to worry about that guy and he was a little off kilter. He even recounted a story that I had actually experienced first hand. I saw the Phenoms play at the Lyons Den and the singer John opened the back door during the set and also opened the doors to some cabinets that house the power amps for the PA. He didnt break anything. He didnt touch anything. The sound man flipped out like nothing else and ran full stride with a salty look on his face to the stage like he was going to save the day. Well now I had come clean with Darius so I told him that he would have to get my cd fromthe burner. Now he got pissed. I had literally been bugging him about this for hours and also had made a lot of problems in general about it. HE told me that I was very annoying. I acknowledged him and again politely asked for my cd. He finally got it and I ran and put it in my car. Then I had a good laugh to myself for all teh shit I had gone thru to get it. WEll it sounds awesome and was well worth it. Hey sound man. You are a douche bag. When I am your age (35 approx i would guess) i will own my land in orlando and own my condo nearly as well. I will not be making $50 a night in cash. You are bitter at the world becasue of it and because you watch bands rock out (including me) and you dont get any glory or credit like the bands. I went to school with people like you for 4 years and I know your type inside and out. You also pussied out at the showdown and refused to hit me tho you threatened to. What exactly were you waiting for? Fuck you!!!

Smear campaign played then. They had their old 2nd guitarist Chris back which was awesome. Also they have a new bassist, Dan, that wasnt in the band a year before when we met them. But Ive seen Smear Camp a bunch of times since then and already knew Dan. I even saw a show where Chris played in a on a few songs. But never a full set with the full new lineup. It was remarkable stuff.

Last up was a band called Farkus. I guess this was a ‘reunion’ show. Early in the night we were surpised to see Eorl. Eorl is an old friend who we met at the Fireside a very long time ago. He has come out to a bunch of shows since then. We saw him and I said thanx for coming but he then explained he was there to perform with Farcus. He said he wasnt an original member but would be playing bass tonite. Well in the end I’m not too keen on Farcus. Its hard for me to say that maybe without dissing Eorl but this needs to be said. What you fucking wear on stage and the props you bring up and how much of a mess you make isnt all that cool when your band and your songs are worthless. This band brought a bunch of acoustic guitars and basses which they smashed. The guy that had kind of threatened me for ripping down the posters was wasted and even trying to smash an acoustic bass in the bar area earlier. Again, big ups to Lyons Den secutiry for letting this go on. Luckily the thing was too strong and he didnt break it, but I could imagine spliters of wood coming at my fucking face. This is not the type of thing you should generally allow people to do in your club. Well this band got cut off after like 10 minutes. Partially for smashing shit and partially because it was getting to the end of the night. Which raises another bogus thing about Lyons Den, they close early and kick people out like Nazis. They get hardcore and really run you out quick which sucks. Well this band shattered like 100 bottles on the floor and broke a ton of guitars. The guitars actually looked nice and shit too, I dont understand the whole thing. I would have liked to just take one home, because you see I’m a little strange like that. I have guitars in my house on stands that I actually play, because I like to play guitar and want to improve. I know its a radical idea. They just wasted a bunch of guitars to look cool but I think its pretty fucking lame.

HEres the thing, bands love to throw bottles and wear crazy clothes and break shit etc…Now if you have some good songs that you play properly and all that it can make you cooler. But when you suck and dont care about your songs it makes you lamer. So breaking shit and all these gimmicks are not always the right thing to do. Just some advice to throw out there.

Also showed up was John, once of the Yellow Snowmen. WE have known John for many years from the scene and hes been in a bunch of bands of numerous styles. We played with the Yellow Snowmen back in like 1998 and its good that we still talk with him and hes just a great guy. Hes also friends with Eorl so he had double reason to come out that night and I’m glad he did. HEs a person that I know I can just level with about music or bands or the scene because hes been around as much if not more then me, and hes always cordial and a down to earth person. I was really glad to see him. Here he is with Eorl.

Right before they kicked everyone out, Darius comes up to me and says ‘Theres no money’. I asked him what the fuck he was talking about and he repeated himself — and so did I. Then he explained no bands were going to be paid. Which is a joke since the place was packed and they were charging an outrageous $7 to get in. When I asked further he couldnt explain why. Now weve probably made zero dollars at 80% of shows. But many had a small draw or some other apparent reason why we shouldnt (or the other bands) be paid. They made a lot of money that night and he couldnt explain where it went. I’m not saying that Darius stole the money or something like that, I more blame the Lyons Den then him as hes pretty honest I think and wouldnt lie or whatever.

I emailed the guys from www.desroyyourradi.com the next day and explained the situation and said I would still like to be featured on their site, and could gladly make the material available to them immediately. They said that would be fine and Hilger has probably already shipped them their CD by the time you read this.

This was one of the wildest shows ever and we all agreed that getting bottles thrown at you, at least in the context in which they were thrown at me that night, was legit credibility and that our performance most importantly was of the higest quality. We all had a ton of fun despite some BS. I’ve had my share and themsome of BS in my experiences of playing gigs with Low Profile so I long ago learned to forget about it and enjoy the shit. You will never hear me (or probably any of the rest of the band) say that a show ‘sucked’ despite whatever. We come to rock everytime no matter what and I will always throw down 110% no matter if you whip a bottle at my head or threaten me. Or if 100 or 1 person shows up. We’ve seen quite a bit and little is new to us so bring on your roadblocks for our good time, because we will fucking steam roll over them.

Low Profile live at Lyons Den
February 20th
with Smear Campaign, Remember the Tiger Tails and Farcus

What a fucking show!!!!!!!
I took a half day at work and left around 11:30. I went, cashed my check, picked up some Johnnys beef on North Ave for lunch, went home, ate, played some bass to warm up, watched American Beauty, took a nap, and then showered before I went to meet the guys at 7. We loaded up and headed to the club. We got to the Den a lil after 8 and we were the first band people there. Satan and I ordered up a drink and chilled at a table. I played some songs on the jukebox. Some more band people showed up and the place started to pack up. Satan had some drama with the soundman but I’ll let him explain all that.
So while we were sitting around, this dude comes up and gives us a flyer for a Last Caress show coming up at Cal’s. He introduces himself as Scott the singer. I didn’t recognize him cuz when I saw them play, he wore the full makeup. So we started bullshitting a lil bit and then we came up with a plan. We told him that we were going to call him up on stage and put him to the test. We scraped Lachrymose in our set and added a Misfits song but we didn’t tell him which one. We threw around a few song ideas but all agreed on doing Astrozombies. That way, he could hear the beginning music and get himself ready to sing the lyrics. We were all real excited about doing it and having a guest singer on stage who we just personally met that night and have never played a single song with. I’ll say right now that it was awesome but I’ll touch on it some more later on in my review. Props. Scott u rule!
So a lil after 10, the first band, Remember the Tiger Tails start their set. They are a 4 piece with 2 guitars. The singer/guitarist played lefty and played the whole show in his underwear. Now that I think about it, I think he walked around most of the night in his underwear. Anyways, I wasn’t feelin this band too much. They seemed to sound or just play very sloppy. So I watched the first 2 sons and got bored and headed out to get another drink and mingle it up with some people. Satan came and found me and we ran out to my car for a quick session. We were due to play second.
So Tiger Tails take a while breaking their shit down and getting it off the stage and out of the way. The singer/guitarist asked me if they could leave their amps on stage and I gave him a simple ‘NO’. I mean, my amp wasn’t on stage while u played. They kept stalling so I just started hauling their amps and guitar cases off the stage and moving them out of the way. I think they got a lil mad but I didn’t give a fuck. There were these signs hanging up on all the mic stands and on the monitors and stuff with pictures on them and Satan asked me what they were. I had no clue so he started ripping em off the mic stands. I guess that pissed some people off and he’ll touch on that in his review. Again, I couldn’t give a fuck. When u play, do what u want. Bring whatever u want on stage. If u need props, thats fine, bring em up with u. But when Low Profile is set to take the stage, get your shit outta the fucking way. I don’t want your fucking promotional pics hanging on our mics while we play. I don’t need any extra amps on stage giving me less room to move around. To me, thats all just common courtesy. We set up and break our shit down quick and get out of the way for whoever is up next. So enough bitching about that.

We rocked the fucking house. Our set was super tight. The live recording came out great. And since I knew we’d be recording live again, I picked some songs we haven’t recorded live as of yet. They all came out great. I was the most excited about Chimerical and I want to throw that in our set for the next few shows. That song is awesome.
Kurt, or Nikki as we call him cuz he looks like Nikki Sixx came up on stage and gave us a good introduction but I don’t think it got recorded.
Astrozombies was fucking great. We called Scott up and introduced him. He grabbed my mic but there was still a mic for me in the middle so I got to do a lot of backups. The crowd was really hyped when we started the song. Many people were singing backups and it just felt great. Having Scott’s added energy on stage really got everyone going. Especially me. After that, the crowd wanted us to play more Misfits. I was considering it but we went back to our original set. And then for our last song, we covered Hulk for President in tribute to Smear Campaign. We really like these guys and have fun hanging out and playing shows with em. We learned it a few weeks ago and jammed it at practice a few times but with no vocals besides for the choruses cuz Satan and I couldn’t figure em all out. So when it came time to start the song, Cactus Matt was nowhere to be seen. We called for him on the mics and he ended up staggering up to the stage from the bar with a fresh drink decked out in his Mardi Gras garbs and beads. We started the song and he did all the vocals. It was fucking great. I hope u guys enjoyed it.
I felt real good after the set. We tore our shit down off stage and went for more drinks. I got a lot of props from everyone on how tight our set was. Thanks a ton. It felt great.
Smear Campaign were up next. Jimmy borrowed some of Rob’s cymbals for the show I guess cuz his car was parked a few blocks away. They were all dressed in silly Mardi Gras party type clothes and were sporting many plastic beads. I’m sure they saw many more male boobs than female boobs but it was all in good fun. At some point in the night, Lumpy was getting hauled out of the club by the bouncers and on the way out, I asked him what happened and I think he said something about going behind the bar and pouring himself a drink or something like that. I’m not sure exactly but it was pretty funny. Anyways, Smear Campaign rocked. They did a lot of their originals and covered Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols near the end of their set. I think they ended with Kill Somebody, Go to Jail. Seeing them play with 2 guitars is the shit. I’ve seen em play with just Paul on guitar and they still rocked but two guitars really polish their sound and add to the energy on stage. They played a good, tight set.
Farcus was doing some sort of reunion show and they were up last. Our buddy Eorl walked in with these guys and said he was playing bass with them for the show even tho he wasn’t an original member. Normally he plays drums and has been in a few bands I’m sure but he said that he can play bass better than their drummer and thats how he got to play this gig with them. These guys brought in a bunch of acoustic guitars and ended up smashing them all and totally destroying the whole room and stage area up. It was a disaster area. I think they only got to play like a 20 minute set or something. Well, it seemed the club owner or bossman and Darius were a lil pissed. I don’t really blame them. At the end of the night, the club workers had to clean all that shit up. They were sweeping shit up into a fucking shovel. Darius didn’t seem to happy about the whole night when I went to go say goodbye to him. I’m not gonna even comment any further on that shit. It just seems a lil excessive, out of line and is uncalled for. Oh well. It’s over and done.
Besides all that, I had a really fun night. Satan and I left together and dropped our shit off at Rob’s and then we chilled at his condo and watched the Bottle Rocket short 13 min film he downloaded which is fucking awesome. And of course we had to have another session to unwind while we listened to the live recording. It came out really well. Can’t wait to get my copy Satan, wink wink. Drop that shit off soon.

Friday December 12th
with Burnside Bridge, Shooting Blanks and the Cobs

Awesome fucking show. Actually, all day was pretty great.

I took off of work that day, slept late, went Christmas shopping, scored some good weed, ate down some Russells bbq, chilled and watched Blow and then picked up Lisa and headed to the show. Lisa and I were the first people there. I know, I’m a dork. Williams showed up a lil later with Jessica. Then all the other band folks showed up. We all chilled and chatted until it was time to set the stage up. I got our free drink tickets from the bartender and distributed them amongst my bandmates. 2 free drinks a piece. Pretty cool. We were up first. We did a soundcheck around 9. We played Boat Dreams From the Hill by Jawbreaker.

Earlier in the evening, I was chatting with Robin and Shaun about guitars and strings and stuff like that. I cursed myself by saying that I hardly ever break a string cuz I broke one during Outspoken. Luckily, I always bring a backup bass so I just ran over and grabbed my Nikki bass and got it set up to go. Dan was happy. He asked if I was gonna play that bass for the show and I said no but I ended up playing it anyways. So our set was:

We rocked out for sure besides for me wasting precious time with my broken string and fucked up input jack. Sorry people. I’ll get that shit fixed right away. Both me and Williams jumped off stage and ran around using our wireless systems to the fullest. We got to record this show live so we’ll probably have copies for some of u. Talk to the Bossman about it.
Bossman gave out a bunch of CDs and stickers. I gave out my last tshirt to a new fan who came with Cactus Matt and seemed to really dig us.

The Cobs were up next. They r 3 piece. They spend half the time on stage telling jokes and stories and trying to make u think or laugh. The songs they play r pretty funny. Some r strictly novelty but make u crack up. I really liked Your Brain is Made of Wood and Punch U In the Face. They really know how to entertain!!!!! Great guys all around. But were they on PCP???????

Burnside Bridge were up next and it was truly their night. It was their CD release party. I got a free CD and bought a shirt from Josh. Great set all around guys. This was our 4th time playing with them and I like them a lil more each time we play or hang out with them. They covered Horror Business by the Misfits and Williams, me and Cactus Matt jumped onstage to sing along. Cactus Matt jumped on stage a few times to sing along. Their set was just…..great. We luv u guys!!!!

Shooting Blanks were up last. At this point, it was after 1 probably. They were all pretty drunk but they always rock. They played 2 new songs and covered Wish by Nine Inch Nails and Nikki (Kurt) ran up and sang their rendition of Home Sweet Home by Motley Crue. We had a great time watching, heckling and singing along.

I had a great night and I think everyone else did also. That show was a total success to me. Darius payed us $54.00 which was pretty awesome so we split that up right away. It covered some of the money we spent on drinks so that was good. They cut Shooting Blanks off and started kicking people out around 2am.

I pumped this show up in my mind for weeks in advance. Luckily, we got the word about 1 week in advance from Josh from Burnside Bridge that we would be playing 1st which was very awesome news. I slept pretty late till around 5 pm after staying up until about 8 30am. I hadn’t had a day off in 9 days so I was so happy that this Friday I would not have to work, and I stayed up late drinking Ballantine Ale, a lil Private Stock Malt Liquor, and some Cobb Salad and Salsa Doritos. I got up at 5 and me and Jessica made a massive ‘breakfast’ (when people are supposed to eat dinner) of 5 eggs, about 15 pieces of bacon and 6 pieces of sausage, 4 pieces of toast. We had to throw some away and saved some of the bacon which I just ate an hour ago. We both felt full to the point of nearly vomiting. I showered up and we hit the road. I made my girlfriend drive so she could be a deginated driver for my drunk ass. I knew that if we were going to play first I would get real drunk afterwards, although all night I think I only had:

1 shot Jagermeister (with Brey and the girl he brought, more on her later)

I was hardly buzzed so I could have easily driven myself but whatever. I got there nice and early and we snagged a good parking spot. Loaded in — Burnside Bridge and The Cobs showed up, then shortly after Shooting Blanks. Brey was going to be there late cause he was going to a Christmas party before hand.

I approched Mark the soundman and introduced myself. I explained that I knew they had a CD burner in the booth, and asked if they could record our set (which I knew them to have done before). I offered to provide the blank CD which I had brought and he said it was cool. I was glad to get that out of the way, since we were very eager to cop a live recording of the show many weeks in advnace.

We had been trying to get into the Lyons Den for a while. I maintain they have some of the best and loudest sound in the city. They have punk acts on Fridays thru a promotion called ‘Punk Rock Night’ which is a group of promoters that books for Fridays at Lyons Den in Chicago and Saturdays at some club in INdianapolis. The main dude is named Darius, who also is the CEO for Criminal IQ records. Criminal IQ has 4 bands on their roster: The Phenoms (seen em 3 times), MOTO (played with em once and saw em another time, and saw the guitarist at a random gig at the Lyons Den in a weird conincidence), the Functional Blackouts (just met one of the members online) and another band called Veedee which I’m sure is a great band but I know nothing about. The first time we played with MOTO at the Fireside months ago, I met Darius (although I didn’t know his name, or that he had anything to do with Punk Rock Night at Lyons Den or Criminal IQ, and also another Criminal IQ guy named Jon. Jon later approached me at the gig since I had taken pics of MOTO for our site; he said he was there to photograph MOTO also and asked if I would share my pics with him, to which I readily agreed. I spoke to Darius only briefly at the show: Smear Campaign (we just met them that night too) were playing and Matt stripped naked and whatnot, and Darius came up to me in the bar randomly and was like ‘That guy stripped his bloody clothes off!’ or something crazy in a British accent, I guess hes from England. I was drunk and just laughed about it then.

Well I had seen a few gigs at Lyons Den: the Powerknobs, Squared off the Mashers and the Phenoms (AWESOME show!!) and also Johnny Vomit (got their live recording and its FLAWLESS!!!). Another part of Punk Rock Night is that Darius or the organization in general hires ‘MCs’ to introduce the bands at what not. Well they had this cunt bitch named ‘Madame M’ or some shit as an MC and Hilger got the idea that she was the promoter (she wasnt, just a lousy MC and this is information Darius gave me myself). She acted like she was the iron fist ruling Punk Rock Night and deciding who gets to play, and even after Hilger gushed on and on about us and gave her numerous CDs, she wouldnt return phone calls or emails or anything. Well I guess Lisa (Hilgers girlfriend) did some investigative work on the Lyons Den site. She must have found the link to www.punkrocknight.com. On that site is Darius direct email and she just emailed him and told him the story and he threw us on the bill with a bunch of our friends. Not only am I extremely greatful to Darius for listening to what went down and giving us the gig (thru a non-band member at that!) but also for putting us with great friends Burnside Bridge and Shooting Blanks (although he probably didnt know we knew them, he was just throwing us in). Thank you very much Darius and also Lisa. When Darius finally approached me at the show, I immediatley remembered him from the Fireside. He explained that he runs Criminal IQ and also Punk Rock Night and I was floored. He was super kind and giving us all kinds of props, giving my gutiar props, giving Robs drums props, giving our music props….super nice guy. I gave him a CD and thanked him profuesly as I am doing now.

Well Mark set up the mics and set levels real quick, then even let us do a sound check song. We opted for ‘Boat Dreams from the Hill’ by Jawbreaker. I wish I could get a soundcheck song at every gig, it helps me warm up so much. My voice was doing all kinds of weird shit for like the first :45 seconds of the song, then it felt some loose and I sang the rest very naturally and I was happy with my throat. The PA and monitors were so clean on the vocals that I had really good control over my voice and was able to do all types of fun shit all night long. After that I tuned my other gutiar (just in case) and tried to chill for the 45 minutes until we were set to go on.

I talked with the Cobs for a while. When I went to check out their site before the gig (I knew nothing about them, although I later found out theyve gigged with Burnside Brige many times), I found a link to none other then www.40ozmaltliquor.com run by my boy Bruz (check out the site!!!). Also for the bassist Keith’s bio, I found that he likes to ‘drink any malt liquor’. I dropped them an email and he responded and agreed that we would definately talk shop on malts at the gig. Well we did — he asked about Camo Silver Ice, the newest, strongest American 40 @ 9% and also how he had found a 40 of City Slicker in Naperville (a rare score indeed!). HE also told me how him and their gutiarist Mike had gotten drunk and eaten dog food the night before, and how now they had the shits. They asked me for my expertise and I agreed that the medication they had on hand (Immodium) would definately do the trick on curbing the massive shit attack pouring from their asspipes.

Well we eventually took the stage. We opened with ‘Arnold Palmer and Katie Holmes’. I regard this as one of our best songs and possibly my all time masterpiece of song writing. We would play it constatnly live except that it contains a very difficult jazz type of insturmental break that is very confusing and easy to get lost in (I have live once before and then we didnt play it for months until this gig). We rehersed the hell out of it in advance and we hammered it perfectly at the gig. The confusing break is based on 2 figures (well call them A and B), each with its corresponding accent.

and all of that takes less then a minute of the song. Well we pulled that off without a stop and then went into the 1st track on our first album ’15 Story Fireball’ called ‘Outspoken’. We hadn’t played this live maybe since like 1999, but we reheresed it plenty in advance. I had no worries about getting lost in this one. We were approaching the 3rd verse and I was thinking ahead of what the next lyrics were when I heard the bass drop out. Hilger had broken a string. Broken strings are basically unpreventable, but that bass (Ernie Ball Musicman, no less) seems to break strings easily. I cannot figure out why but this may be time for Hilger to have it serviced by a professional. I looked at Rob while I was singing and playing to see if he wanted to stop the song (we were already near 2 minutes in probably) and we decided to play thru it. Hilger grabbed his 2nd bass and transferred the strap and jumped back in probably in about 45 seconds. Only problem now is that the passive electronics of the Nikki Sixx Gibson Blackbird bass (nice as it is) has a much lower output then the active elecronics of the Ernie Ball. So the bass was a little quiet. No matter — we finished that track. A while later we played ‘Hate’, and during the end of the song I thrashed my head into my own mic which I’ve never done before. It hurt a bit but I’m not sure if anyone noticed. We ended up having to cut 2 songs from our set for time constraints. I don’t mind and understand the grand scheme of the show, but the other bands played very long sets it seems, while from our recording I estimate our set at like 29 or 30 minutes, which I construe as serious nitpicking. But I’ll let it go. We ended up closing with our third to last song ‘Execution Style’, and into the lead break at the end I jumped off the stage (wireless system baby) and played the solo in the crowd. It was pretty awesome.

AFter that I went back to the bar and pounded some more water. Then I ordered a Bass (which later ran out, so I switched to Guiness). Some chick named Trish came up to me and I must say she was a little bit of a bitch. I don’t even know her and she just walked up to me and asked if she could use my phone. Plus she said that she didnt’ even see my band. I told her she could, but that I would have to call the person myself and talk to them for a minute. I wanted to do that just to piss her off and amuse myself. The person didn’t answer but then he walked in as we were standing there. His name is Jonathan and his number is 773 685 0089. Call him and harass him. He walked in and we made some stupid conversation then Trish told him that he missed the first band. Jonathan remarked that ‘the first band usually has no talent’. Which proves he knows nothing about music. Slots are often chosen completely at random. Fuck them both. If they were a friend of someone I do know, no offense, but they were both out of hand.

The Cobs played next and they were crazy. They are a 3piece and their bassist sings. He was wasting a lot of time talking to the crowd and telling jokes which was very amusing. Then they would play a song that was like 20 seconds long. They played one song called ‘Cash Money’ (those are the only lyrics) and me, Josh and Corey from Burnside Bridge all jumped up their at Keiths request to sing along. Now Josh and Corey only knew the song since they had played with the Cobs before — but I’m such a good musician myself I was able to ‘wing it’ and figure out the song as it played. And I was assisted by the band running through the 10 second jam once to acquaint the crowd with it before they actually ‘played it’. They also played a crazy thrashing song where they called their friend from a band called the Dirtbikes up on stage to sing it. That guy and me later discussed Humboldt Park, as he grew up there and I work there often. Nice fella.

I’ve gone back and read their lyrics and they are hilarious. Me, Mike and Cactus Matt had a long talk about the Melvins, Nirvana and old school punk bands like Flipper (although I opted out of that one since I know nothing about those old bands).

After the Cobs set, me and Mike were chillin and eventually figured we should go check out Burnside although we were so relaxed in our booth up front. They rocked out and covered ‘Horror Business’ with Robin on vocals (a very nice twist) and me, Hilger and Cactus Matt all came up to sing along. I bought their CD and a shirt (cant wait to rock that at a show) and the CD was worth the wait. The engineering sounds great as do the songs.

Shooting Blanks took the stage last and this was the first time I got to see them with Deech back. ‘Simple Song’ gave me the chills hardcore. Maybe I had had just enough alcohol but I was enjoying myself so much when they played, I wish they could have played all night. Don’t buy into Matt and the rest of his bands self-depreciation; they rock out time and time again even when hammered. ‘Payback’ was awesome with Scott from Ratbag Hero up front with me singing along. They did their awesome cover of ‘Home Sweet Home’ again and Nikki from the Mutiny, who was there as MC and sang along with Matt on the song when Shooting Blanks and Low Profile played the Mutiny earlier this year, sang along again. Cactus Matt jumped up there with him as well.

It was great to see Deech again and I must admit I suddely became verklempt and a little bittersweet at thinking of the blast I had with those guys this summer filling in for Deech. What a great band they are. Good luck on your upcoming tour guys!

Brey was wasted when he showed up at the gig late into the night. He had been at some Christmas party with a chick he used to date named Janelle (I think?!?!) who was looking real hot in a nice black dress. So many people came up to me asking if I seen her tits which I definately did. When Shooting Blanks was playing, this chick was standing next to me so I just fired off the camera at her tits at close range. She objected but not much, and I didn’t give a fuck anyways. Brey was shitfaced at the bar and I bought a round of shots. When he was up there he was tanked but still played well. Except in ‘Simple Song’ he started out playing it a half step off which was hilarious, till he looked at Matt’s gutiar and fixed it. Thats the best kind of drunken fuck up.

It was freezing out, eventually I got home and unloaded my ton of shit. The live recording came out pretty good, check it out. Thanx to Amber for coming, also Scott from Ratbag Hero, Sid and Cactus Matt and Hoser from Squared Off.

Show #60: Party At Dylan’s, Franklin Park

My god, what a night. I was nervous about this event for a while before hand but now looking back I can see that it was a total success and not a single thing really went wrong.

Joe from Squared Off (here, in mask, with Rob, Hilger and some little kin) was nice enough to provide the use of his van and some assistance of lugging gear around for the day. The night before he came over and we swilled some beer 40s (Milwaukees Best Ice and Old Style). He showed up the next day at 3 oclock. We grabbed some gear from my crib and went to Rob’s to grab all his drums, the amps and the PA. I knew there would be mad kegs at the party but you know I’m always prepared: I ‘stole’ a cooler that had been chilling in the back yard of my condo for over a year and cleaned it up the night before, and filled it with 2 King Cobra 40s and a 6 pack of the worst beer I’ve ever seen in my life, ‘Golden Anniversary Beer’. We stopped for some ice at Shell on the way to Dylans (of course I took 2 bags even though I only paid for one). We got to Mohles and there were just a few people there including Dyland and Jim Washburn. We loaded in and Joe roughly set up Rob’s drums. I set up the PA and amps and got the 4-track ready. Hilger showed up in a little bit and Rob showed up a little bit after that. By the time Rob showed up it was probably about 5:30. Dylan had a whole spread of awesome food set up for when people got there, but he let me mange early since I was starving (plus I’m ‘in the band’). I scarfed down some mostocholli and BBQ chicken wings which was warmed up in the microwave by Dylan’s mom. I went back outside and people were starting to drink a lil although there was still very few people there. I then went inside to get ready. I stuck my head in Dylans shower and gelled/moussed up my hair and combed it forward into a mighty devilock. I put some black paint around my eyes then to top it off I poured some of my all natural fake blood into my mouth and let it drain out over my chin and down my body and shirt. When I decided I looked scary enough I went back outside. The look was still not complete so I poured more blood in my mouth and also over the back of my neck. It was dripping everywhere very nicely and I was content.

We played a short set for basically no one and then took a break. We later jammed a bit more but were cursed as the opening band and hardly anyone saw us. But in the end it was worth it as far as I was concerned since we were not rushed and could really relax up there.

I’d like to give a quick shot out to Dylans girlfriend Jenny. She was in my ‘homeroom’ (although we called it something else and now theyve done away with it completely) in high school and was never a cunty bitch like alot of other hot chicks were to me in high school. She worked her ass off for days before decorating and getting shit ready and thoughout the party truly played the part of hostess to a ‘T’. I want to thank her for all her hard work as I defiantely appreciated it and everyone there did even if they didn’t acknowledge it.

Well we played the obligatory millions of Misfits songs and a bunch more. We opened, closed and played one other time the song ‘Halloween’. There were some little kids there. When we first started, and after we took our little intermission, they said how ‘it was very loud and I was singing too close to the mic’. Future sound engineers, let me tell you. But strangely, as the show went on, they started to love it, dancing all around and screaming uncontrollably thoughout the songs, during every song! After some convincing, we got em to talk into the mic a little bit which was great. Check em hear throwing the goat — the vampire one is only in 2nd grade! Low Profile probably ruined her for life. My girlfriend showed up in her costumer: which was her idea, but I helped engineer it and also added the blood. Click the pic and youll see what I mean — bloody tampon. Heres another one. Alot of people seemed to be disgusted by it, but I was so taken with its originality that even now it hasnt dawned on me that its gross. The smoke machine, which I had brought to only 1 other gig (the Mutiny — but I put too little smoke juice in it and it was real weak) kicked ass as I dumped about a liter of smoke juice in there before we played, it was cranking for a long time. I even taped the remote control to my mic stand so I could jam on it during songs real quick here and there.

Well at some point Tony Perry asked to use our PA. I told him he should have asked in advance but it ended up that they had their own. Tony complained that his was a ‘piece of shit’ but he had massive speakers that were at least 4 1/2′ high! It was loud as hell so I didn’t understand why he wanted mine and still don’t. I’m just happy I didn’t have to provide it. Tony was dressed up as ‘Fat Elvis’ and his band Triple Lindy (the remanants of Out of Time) was pretty decent.

Well during this time I was drinking some keg beer and taking down Jello shots. Jenny was carrying around trays of em and I had at least 3. I started buzzing pretty hard for whatever reason.

At some point I cracked a King Cobra and later some Golden Anniversary Beer (when I saw matt boyle of carmapgin armando swillin an old style, I knew he was down with the bad beer — so i had to hook him up with one). The fake blood was mad sticky all over me and the top button on my only 3 times worn new camo pants busted off. I was getting pretty hammered. The other bands played well past midnight and it got a little blurry. Hilger used to be in a band called Socially Unnaceptable with 2 of the members of Campaign Armando back around 95 or 96 so he demanded I take this pic of their ‘reunion’. Socially Unacceptable I used to go see before I even owned or ever picked up a guitar, so go figure. They were real cool, musically and personally.

Around 1 am most people were gone and so was the beer (4 half and quarter barells). I went down into the basement and started eating mad cold bbq wings, i was eating the meat off in 1 bite each and tossing the bones into a massive heap. then i crammed a massive cold beef sandwich down my throat. i ended up staying up to 5 am and getting completely sober. i wanted to do laundry right away cause i didnt know if it would be bad if that shit dried all over me. my hair was greasy as fuck and that black eyemakeup is a bitch to get off. ill admit that this review is a little weak but i wrote a ton that night then didnt touch it for a while, now its monday night and i figure i better fucking post it. some times too much happens at the best shows and its hard to write it all down. this isnt too bad.

Show #52: US Beer Company ‘Mob Fest’, Chicago

What is MOBFest? Not sure that I know myself. Something along these lines: for a fee (aroudn $50 as I understand it), you submit your demo and some big time record exec’s listen to it and then come to see you play at MOB Fest sposored show, which occur for 2 or 3 night around the city. Approximately 10 clubs a night participate in this event. I think that its largely a joke, I’m sure that no bands get ‘signed’ as a result of this, its just another sick excuse to ‘pay to play’. US Beer Co from our previous experience there is a shady club, at least as far as the way its run. The 1st time we played there, they had only Bud Light and Budweiser available. When I asked why, the bartenders told me something about the owner being distrustful of distributors and their alleged ‘scams’. They had run out of booze and beer at a recent previous show and had not re-copped shit because of the lack of convienent availability. Now this to me signifies a fucked up type of management. So MOB Fest was being hosted at the US Beer Co that night. There were 8 MOBFest bands booked I believe, they were scheduled to play on the upstairs main stage. We (with 6 other bands) were set to play on the downstairs stage simaltenously. We technically had nothing to do with MOBFest, although since we would be playing in the same club with record exec’s in the crowd, wouldn’t we as well have a chance of getting ‘noticed’?(Plus we didnt’ have to pay some bullshit fee) Ironically, we would end up having even more exposure then the basement stage, but I’ll get to that…. Hilger and I arrived around 5:30 pm as planned. Rob said he would be there closer to 7. No worries since according to the (broke-ass) website of the club, we were scheduled to play at 9:30. Ratbag Hero was the band that originally got us the show, but they had canceled. Shooting Blanks had been booked at the last second (day before), and our old friends Last Man Out as well as club promoter Andy and his band The Symptoms were scheduled, so I was excited. It seemed that we were there excessively early, but this was the time Andy had told me to be there.

So we chilled and bided our time. A crowd started to filter in as well as some of the other bands. Shooting Blanks arrived and we had them store their gear with ours. We started drinking and everything seemed well. It was however, not the case….

As we mulled about in the basement area, I was talking to Andy and trying to find out our slot and what time we would be going on. Just then I watched his face freeze up and I turned to see what he was so shocked at. Two cops, in plain clothes but with holstered weapons out (one even had a bulletproof vest on) came down and started looking around. I didn’t know why there were there but figured it couldn’t have been good. Just a few nights ago, the place got shit down a bit early due to noise complaints.

Rob arrived but we were told not to load in any more gear. We were told that the owner was talking with the cops. No one knew what was going on but it was beginning to look like the basement bands were going to get canceled. Just then Andy popped up and hit me with the news. The owner had been cited for not having proper permits and tax shit since he techically had 2 clubs/shows going on, they didn’t want the basement show to go on. Andy’s solution was to set up the basement acts on the floor in front of the MOBFest bands big stage upstairs (thus putting all the bands on the same floor). We would only get to play for 15 min. each, in the intermission between bands on the big stage, while the next band set up. We set up 2 guitar rigs, a bass rig and a drum set for everyone to use to minimize set up times. This situation was definately fucked but thanks to Andy’s smarts and unwillingness to let the show get canceled, it looked like it was going to happen.

Yer Mothers Lovers was the 1st band of the night, they were one of the MOBFest bands. Hilger’s original band Socially Unacceptable had played with these guys back in the day and Hilger and met one of the members even previous to that while standing in line for Primus tickets. Then they opened for the Powerknobs not a week before this night, I missed their set though. They were awesome and rocked hard. Their song ‘Satan and Lucifer’ is, to say the least, right up my alley.

The the 1st basement band, Last Man Out took the stage (or the area in front of it). This was our 3rd time playing with them — in 3 different venues, all 3 times booked together by chance. This was the 1st time I really partied with the members and watched them closely, and discovered a new found respect for them. This band is awesome, can’t say enough good things about them. Due to the cramped arrangements, at one point a cymbal stand fell over. Someone picked it right back up but myteriouslly the bass rig died at that same moment. Luckily it was in the closing seconds of their last song so it didn’t matter. Upon investigating further after the set, we found that the edge of the cymbal had falled perfectly and chopped the bassists cord right in half, perfectly clean. Now that was fucked.

Shooting Blanks was the next ‘basement’ band to play. Matt somehow broke his strap right before they played while tuning up in the backroom. He has some kind of weird strap locks so Hilger (who also has strap locks) couldnt even loan him a strap. I just said fuck it at that point, and told him to use my guitar. He beat the shit out of it but it survived and somehow stayed almost completely in tune.

After them was some country music sensation: a 16-year old prodigy. Her set seemed to go on forever. Finally we took our ‘stage’.

It was a total success and went off without a hitch. We really went all out and went insane considering how short our set was. It felt really good. We gave out a bunch of stickers and shirts in the chaos after the set and got a good response from people.

The Symptoms were the next basement band and they fucking rocked once again. They have elements of weird guitar lead and vocals over it like Fugazi, but they also play fast straight forward punk shit at times too. Andy has an octave pedal that he uses constantly, clicking it on and off — he plays more lead and riffs then chords. They are great.

I stayed a while later and then busted out, I was drunk and still nursing a mysterious fever I had taken on the night before, which still sticks with me even as I type this the next day. Its just enough to feel weird and uncomfortable. Wish it would go the fuck away.

I’ll never play US Beer Co again unless its under new management. I would beef with the cops but they were probably just busting this guys balls cause they dont like him, and it would seem like he would deserve it. Much props to Andy for always being optimistic and knowing that the show must go on. Big up to Shooting Blanks and Last Man Out, 2 dead serious bands that have been doing their thing for years. Can’t wait to play with either of them again.

Show #39: Afternight Studios, Franklin Park

this show was awesome. there were 5 bands, we played 2nd. the 1st band was pretty heavy, called Bello. they were something like alice in chains(that what hilger said, i agree). the drummer was pretty cool, the singer
was pretty tatted and pierced up. i was anxious and nervous as ever, the place is only like 1 mile from my crib so i went home and laid down for a bit. the place is in a factory, there are also rehersal rooms for rent in there, there were actaully bands in there jamming in their rooms while the show went on. there were alot of young kids there(high school), at least
1 or more of the other bands were around that age. the best thing about playing with bands like that(besides scoping out the underage L.G.’s)is that they bring a ton of people. we fucking jammed, it felt very right, i didnt feel overly exerted after the show but we played balls out. jamey johnsen came on stage and played’coming down’with us for the last song. for the approx.
$180 that hilger paid for the tickets(which we didnt sell)we got an audio recording(cd)and videotape(multi-camera, with audio straight out of the board.), both came out great, very high quality. all the people there were very nice and respectful, the other bands were all nice, overall great gig.

Low Profile live at Afternight Soundstage – Saturday June 8th
w/ Bello, Going Lefty, Afternoon Drive, and the Target Rats

Well, a good time was had by all. The venue is not the best. The stage is all
good and the club is all good but the procedures they go thru to put on
a show is bullshit. There was a security guard there and I’m sure the Franklin Park officials made it so but oh well. He was an alright guy.
Anyways, we played second. We played a damn good set. Rocked the mutha fucka without a doubt. We gave out a bunch of free CD’s and stickers and I made a bunch more friends. The guys in Target Rats were great. I had a lot of fun hanging with them. And the girls that worked the front door were cool as hell. See I have to start remembering names so that I can put names
instead of descriptions of people. Oh well.

Going Lefty played third. They were alright. They had the talent and the
desire to be in a band but they weren’t playing together as a band. It
seemed that someone was always off tempo from everyone else. Usually the drummer I noticed. I’m not ripping them but saying practice more.
Afternoon Drive played fourth. They were good. A bit to nice and poppy for
me. The singer/guitarist was awesome. Good voice, he played guitar good
and was entertaining. The drummer was awesome. Props to him. But the
second guitarist and bassist already have big heads and just annoyed me.
They thought they were the shit and lost my respect. Target Rats played last and they played like 4 NOFX songs and an H20 song and then 3 songs I didn’t recognize. They need to write their own material and
just cover 1 NOFX song per show. Oh well. Give them some time. I jumped
on stage to sing backups for Stickin In My Eye and Beer Bong. It was a
blast. So that was the show. I had a lot of fun. The live recordings came out
awesome.

Show #34: Riverpalooza III, River Grove

Riverpalooza 3 was a blast as usual this year.It was at the River Grove American Legion right on Grand around River Rd. Rob my drummer lives a block away and Eric, my guitarist lives right across the fuckin street. The cops and an ambulance actually had to come to this show cause some girl wanted to mosh around and hurt her ankle. Well, Low Profile played a 55 minute, 22 song set. We played really well. We even did a cover of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues. How bout that shit? The man in black. So the place was pretty packed when we played. At least the most people were in there to see us play and it emptied out as we brought our equiptment outside. Selling tickets for shows is a pain in the ass. Eric and I gave all our tickets away for free. But of course the day of the show we had people calling us and showing up at the American Legion trying to get in and we had to refuse. I mean, people I offered tickets to a month in advance wanting tickets the day of the show. Sorry, u get a big “Fuck You.” We had the sound man, Ranger, get a DAT and record us live. We made like 30 copies on CD and gave them away for free cause thats what Low Profile does. So yeah, thats about it. Some other bands played. I’m only going to mention Cyribis cause they’re the only band worth talking about. I only got to see 3 of their songs. They fuckin rocked as usual.
