Show #68: Mutiny, Chicago

i dont remember where we originally met nikki (curt). i guess it must have been at the mutiny but since ive seen him at numerous shows including one night he was the master of ceremonies at the lyons den and introduced us. hes a huge motley crue fan and a great guy and we got along great from the getgo. after our last show at the mutiny he told me he was now booking sundays there. he offered me a date and we immediatley took it. it was going to be a 3 band bill (never heard of the other 2 bands — ‘the worst’ and ‘hyper viper’)..but hyper viper canceled a couple weeks before hand. somewhere at that same time our friends the symptoms got on the bill. then ‘the worst’ dropped off and nikki gave me an opportunity to book a band. doesnt that sound like an ideal situation, getting to book bands yourself? it sucks: people dont call back, give you the run around, etc… anyways, i figured i would give it a try for like a half hour to see what i could whip up, then hand the reigns of power back to nikki. i called our friends the powerknobs (no answer) then squared off (couldnt do it), then gave up. so the show was relegated to a 2 band bill, which is fine with me.

this was the cd release party for our 6th album ‘get it RiGht, keep it RiGht’. we spent a long time in the studio and as always getting the final product into your hand takes plenty of time, money and patience. the money is the least of my problems. i dont like waiting. regardless, this show was a huge weight off my shoulders, i was glad to give the fucking things out and be reassured that it was actually done.

i got there right on time and loaded in. i had a special wardrobe set up for the gig. i have tons of shirts that i will only wear when i play because i dont want to wreck them from washing the shits 100 times. im real into vintage skateboard gear, especially vision street wear. i have some reissued shit but i was lucky enough to score a pair of brand new shoes from 1987 a while back for a real good price. my most wanted item was always the elusive VSW beret. i lost 2 auctions on ebay for em and i copped the 3rd. for a long time i thought they only came in black but this 3rd one that i won is the same pattern as the shoes. which is awesome, i just got the beret in the mail a few days before the gig.

i got pretty drunk the night before, and also to keep my edge i decided not to drink anything. the mutiny even has the rare 50/50 soda which is awesome so i was drinkin some of that. at some point hilger asked if i wanted to play pool. i gave an ambilivent response like ‘i guess’ or something. i couple dudes had been playing non stop the whole time i was there. i was sitting at the bar not paying attention and hilger hands me the cue and says ‘its your shot’. so i approached the table and was about to go and one of the dudes comes back and asks whats going on. i immediatley became concerned that hilger had racked up the balls and they were still in play on the table, a game in progress. i asked him and he said they were racked but no one had been playing for a while. this is a shady situation because a) no one racks the balls when they arent going to play anymore BUT b) if you want to play, go ahead. if not then let someone else. i didnt hardly want to play anyways so i just racked the balls back up again and apologized to the guy and handed him the cue. he kept on mumbling bullshit like ‘why did you do that?’. in retrospect he was probably drunk and i couldnt tell. i started thinking about how this was my cd release show and even tho hilger may have been at fault we gave the shit back and he should have just shut up and played the damn game. but he had to keep on with his remarks. so i started to raise my voice and told him to drop it and play the game. i told him not to get loud and tried to walk away. he got offended and said how he wasnt getting loud. i told him straight up that i am a star and he ought to respect it or check it. i told him it was my cd release party and the pool table was all his. again, he made some more comments but nothing abrasive, he was like an annoying drunk that keeps apologizing and you tell them to shut the fuck up. i guess i should ahve not gotten invovled in the first place. to make an analogy, think of this last season of the sopranos. tony and johnny sack are friends but tony b. kills some people and johnny gets pissed. so tony s. has 2 options: to fold to johnny sack in order to keep the peace, or just say ‘fuck you, i know tony b. was wrong but i dont give a fuck, and if you dont like it ill kill you and well go to war.’. option #2 is how i kind of wanted the season to end and how i thought it might. and thats kind of my philosphy, at some point you just fight for the sake of fighting even at the same time acknowleding you are wrong. well i walked away from the guy and he didnt say shit to me the rest of the night. later on he was talking to someone and i just walked up and handed him a cd. his mouth opened like he was going to say something but i think he was a little in shock and didnt know what to say.

well alot of people came out to support us, including 4/5 of the powerknobs, 2/3 of squaredoff, 2/4 of the sharky doyles. that shit is what a scene is all about, bands supporting bands in important shows, or any shows for that matter. i super appreciate all those guys coming out, its really awesome of them. this is the 4th time weve played the mutiny and we never had any PA problems before. even at the big horse which has an imfamously bad PA i had no problems. but not only was this PA cutting in and out, i couldnt hear myself and hilgers mic was way louder which caused me to overcompensate and blow out my voice real quick. im not one to blame shit on equipment but like i said, ive never had this problem at the mutiny before. it was very strange. we played our whole set then started taking requests and we got many , and played most. we were taking especially misfits requests as always and got some odd ones, including andy from the symptoms who kept yelling for ‘all hell breaks loose’. i ignored him at first cause we hadnt played that in a long time then eventually we just decided we could play it anyways and it came out perfect. andy came up and sang it and did a great job, especially great cause i was so tired of singing. we played a pretty mammoth set and afterwards i just let myself collapse cause i was mad tired. hilger also busted out a toolbox which he used to carry his cords and various junk then used it as a footstool for when he sang, being inspired by chevelle’s singer who does the same thing.

oh yeah before we played the symptoms did. they were awesome and have a new bass player. their old bass player todd was a strange fella. id say he has a minor case of split personalities. the first time i met him he was a prick, like going out of his way to be a prick. but there were other times where i chilled with him and andy and we got along really well. i guess hes not in the band for the same reason, although he lived with andy and they were obviously close friends, they got into some crazy fights where todd kind of attacked him and what not. all in all i think their new (tho technically old ) bassist brad is a better fit, a much more laid back type of dude and he plays the bass plenty well to keep up with andy. andy originally emailed hilger about getting on the bill for this show. he asked if they could play it (as if we were running the show?) and then added that if he didnt hear back from us he would ‘just call ed [the owner]’. this pissed me off. im sure that andy didnt mean it in the way i took it cause hes a pretty laid back type of person who would probably go out of his way to NOT step on someones toes but i took it as going over my head. i wrote him an email (which he never responded to and now i think he never got) saying that he should slow his roll before he pulls some shit like that. in the end i shouldnt have been so angry cause they were a great band to have played with on this special night. like anything else, i always liked them but in now seeing them for the 3rd time i was able to appreciate it alot more. they were really good and they have a very unique style mixing very straightfoward punk rock with some strange type of metal and other heavy riffing. they ruled.

also have to give an indepth shot out to ed. ive met ed everytime i played at the mutiny. he definately doesnt remember me nor do i expect him to, but not only does he greet you with friendliness and a handshake, but also a wide smile and he is just a really good natured person. when i first got there and was loading in, he was setting up the PA and checking it. ‘i cant get no satisfaction’ by the rolling stones was on the jukebox at the time and he started singing along thru the PA. then he handed me the mic and asked if it sounded ok. so i started singing it to and we were laughing and having a great time. he told the story of the stones coming on ed sullivan and getting banned and all that to me and andy and we were crackin up.

all in all, heres a short summary:

1)sunday shows suck cause people dont come out at all or leave real early cause of monday morning.
2)ed is one of the nicest club owners ive ever come across.
3)the symptoms are one of the best bands around.
4)the PA sucked which caused my voice to blow out like a speaker that you stabbed with a screwdriver

most importantly,
5)i had a blast

Low Profile live at the Mutiny
Sunday June 20th
with the Symptoms

So we got offered this show while we were sitting at the bar after we played the Mutiny on May 1st by Kurt who works there. We like to call him Nikki and he is the dagobastard!!!! So thanks to him right off the bat for setting this show up. It seemed to take forever to get here.

Originally there were supposed to be 3 bands. Then 1 band cancelled and the Symptoms were added to the bill. Then that 3rd band cancelled so we tried to book someone else but just gave up and figured fuck it. 2 bands for the whole night. It worked out well.

I got to the club right around 9pm. I got some good parking right down the block. I loaded in and talked briefly with Ed and Nikki. Scott Herschler and Kelly were there way early. So thanks to them for taking the time to come out. Sorry we played so late and u didn’t get to see us. But I appreciate u making the effort.

The turnout for the evening wasn’t great. I didn’t expect it to be. Sundays aren’t the best night of the week to be playing a late show. But u know how Low Profile does it. We play the same whether there r 10 people watching or 100.

The Symptoms played first. They played a real good, solid set. I like these guys more and more each time I see them. And lets see, we’ve played with them 3 times now. And I’ve gone to see them 4 or 5 other times besides that. Great band all around. We have to play more shows with these guys.

So we played next. Before we played, we gave out a bunch of our free merch. I think Satan gave out a free CD to everyone that was inside the Mutiny. I was giving out tshirts and stickers left and right. I’m not sure what time we started but I’m guessing it was a lil after 11 or so. Our set was something like this:

Hot Mom
High Gravity
Ultraviolence
Hotboxed
Low Pro Pt 1
The Will to Kill
King of the Hill theme
Folsom Prison Blues (originally by Johnny Cash)
American Nightmare (originally by the Misfits)
Milwaukee
Radical New Idea
In the Zone
Excited to Die (requested by Joe)
30 Years (originally by PITS) with Jamie on drums and Rob on vocals
I Turned Into A Martian (originally by the Misfits) for Jamey
All Hell Breaks Loose (originally by the Misfits) for Andy (w/andy on vocals)
Mr. Pig (requested by bill knobs)
Grudge

We added a bunch of songs in there. Some were requests. Next time we do Martian, we need a bunch of people to come help sing that shit. I sing so damn bad on the backup whoa-oh-oh. I cringe at my own voice. Oh well.

It was a good, fun set for sure. My fingers are tore up. I slept pretty well last night and took a half day at work.

So thanks to Ed and Nikki, the Symptoms, Scott and Kelly, Aaron, Ross Bill and Andrew, Jamie and Frank, Hoser and Joe, and everone else who was there drinking to our noisy background music.

Another good show to add to the list. Next one is July 9th!!!!

Show #67: Triple D’s, Chicago

weber likes to walk into bars and size the place up. he does a quick inventory then asks for the manager. he convinces them that allowing punk rock bands to play there will bring in lots of people, which of course will drink a shitload of beer. then he asks all his friends (who are in bands, like me) if they want to play. thats how low profile got a gig at triple d’s.

weber never told me what time to be there. www.ratbaghero.com said ‘doors at 7, bands at 9’. so i figured i should get there before 7, i arrived around 6:30. i was the first one there. i walked up and looked thru the window — there was no one behind the bar and no patrons. i got scared it was closed and id have to wait for the owner to show up, or worse that the gig was canceled. my worrying was useless tho, as the door opened when i tugged on it.

i entered and was motioned to the other room by a worker. i unloaded my gear and got a glass of water. i thre on my ipod and commenced to block out the world. shortly thereafter, the gotards showed up. they were nice enough. i called hilger and rob and told them i was there and to hurry up and arrive so we could try to get an early slot on the bill. i tried calling weber as i had been for 2 days and again it went straight to voice mail. i called matt from shooting blanks and he said it was going to be at least an hour till he arrived. he told me he had just spoken with weber. so when i hung up i tried calling his house and he answered. i told him to hurry up and get down there because i had somehow become the unofficial represetative or promoter of the show and i was being peppered with questions from every angle by the club owner and everyone else.

hilger and rob soon arrived and we fed the jukebox which had a nice selection. for my first dollar i wanted to get a huge ‘bang’ for my buck. so i got about 13+ minutes of music for $1 by choosing 2 great (and epic) songs: ‘pictures of you’ by the cure and ‘beginnings’ by chicago. hilger fed it a few more times and we all chilled.

at some point our friends the cobs showed up. we had met them at a gig we got thrown together for at lyons den a while back. they were real agreeable guys and we got along great. i had been dying to play with them again and weber let me book a band so i invited them. luckily they agreed. they went on first and keith looked like he hadnt slept in sometime. he said he had basically been drinking all day before he got to the club and it showed. didnt come off in a bad way during the performance however and his strange off-kilter humor rocked the crowd. the cobs are some kind of performace art. they are beyond explanation. when we played with them the first time they had given me a cd. when i got home i found it was blank (turned out all the cds they had given out that night were blank, not a good thing). he gave me another one (i just burned the old one for hilger). anyways, since i had that blank copy for so long, i downloaded the 3 songs they have on their site. my favorite of the 3 is ‘save the booze’ hands down. i called it out many times while they played and near the end of their set keith asked for requests. i screamed the song title out again and he agreed to play it. without warning i shared the mic with keith for the choruses as i know it very well having listened to the song many times. i tried to explain to keith….this guy has such a great ear for writing melodies that he can sing any lyrics in the world and the melody will have you feeling a completely different way then the lyrics would have you feeling. in this song the chorus lyrics are a bit silly, basically about a spaceship taking you into space and make sure you take booze with you becasue there is no booze in space. but the melody makes me want to cry. i just love it. thats something i cannot, or am not interested in doing when i write: making a melody like that. im obsessed with math and song structute. but that is neither here nor there (i love that expression) because this is supposed to be about the cobs and the show. moving on….

next up was us. i brought the wireless and it was in full effect. it actually seemed to cut out for a second when i was far from my amp but im unsure if it was a shoddy connection on my guitars output jack or the signal problem. it was tiny. first of all, i forgot my lucky towel. the towel not only brings my good luck and forunte, but wipes the sweat from my face and eyes between songs. i havent forgotten it in many shows and this one was actually hot so it really sucked. we opened with ‘arnold palmer and katie holmes’…..and i broke a string literally within 7-10 seconds of the song starting. in a way it was no big deal because it was so quick, i think some people thought it was a sound check or something. well we jumped back in after i switched guitars and everything was going as planned. we planned to use the same set list from our previous show at the mutiny but we did throw a bunch of others in and change it up a lil this time around. later we were playing ‘folsom prison blues’ and hilger broke a string on his bass. 2 broken strings in 1 set! this never ever happens. its rare that either of us breaks a string. i didnt really hear his string break but rob did and as i had my mouth open about to sing the 4th verse rob hit some inadvertant drum as a result of being thrown off by hilger. me trying to sing at that point was like when you have a sneeze that almost comes out but doesnt. my whole brain froze and im suprised i could still play guitar. for the life of me i could not think of the 4th verse lyrics then so we played it insturmantal. fucking broken strings!!! the rest of the set went well. we threw in ‘use your mind’ by guttermouth as our last song. we havent played that or rehersed it in a long time but it was on. next on the guttermouth cd is a song called “7T’s”. Hilger just busted into it and caught me off guard. i make it a habit to throw down my pick after our last song (which i had already done). so i started playing with my hand and luckily brey from shooting blanks saw me walk towards my pic and he handed it to me. we rocked out the break and i tried to get the lame crowd to sing along for ‘stupid, lazy, cant hold a job’ but they refused, or so it would seem. before our set brey told me to make sure we turn up the vocals before we played because they were quiet for the cobs. i told him i would if necessary but bet him that when i took the mic i would be so loud there would be no need. indeed there was not as i could hear myself blazing in my ears with no monitors and the PA wasnt really even near me. the set was a success.

next up were the gotards. their lead guitarist played keyboards a lil or something. he also held his guitar weird. their singer refused to face the audience much, check the pics of em, youll see. i took others too, he was always turned away. i think all singers should take a cue from john from the phenoms. he gets down on one knee and will sing like that. im sure he got that from someone else buts its a great trait to have.

last up were shooting blanks. they threw in some new material and deech brought in one of those things from stores where text scrolls across the screen, it showed their logo (the sperm) swimming around and other funny shit. its great to look around at the guys from ratbag or hilger or other people and everyone knows the words. everyone loves shooting blanks, i know i do. this was our 6th time playing with them which is just crazy. after their gig brey was stressing to me that we need to play even MORE shows together! hey, not that im going to complain! bring em on! its so comforting to have them around at a gig, it feels like home as cheesy as that sounds. great cap to the night. im not just saying this because i didnt want to play last (tho i didnt), but i honestly thought shooting blanks should be playing first as soon as we discussed the lineup. they are a headlining band. maybe i think that because they have headlined alot of gigs, they are a band that can pull it off and they accept their responsibility to do it because they know its just props to them, which i think they deserve.

i hung out for a while after the gig, my legs were super fucking tired i just had to sit on the ground. people started crowding around me and sitting on the ground then which is funny. like scott from ratbag hero, hes a follower you know, so he did it first. then even betty came and sat with us. and if i do say so myself, i think she was a little drunk! i only point it out because shes always very composed and doesnt drink alot/really fast. which is good of course, getting sloppy drunk is pretty classless. take weber for example. he was shitfaced beyond repair mumbling something to me, trying to explain about the money from the door and the bands getting paid, etc… they were supposed to have a PBR special for $2 but they had no PBR so they sold old style genuine draft for $2. ill be damned if i drink that garbage but people were definately swillin em.

solid night, great show. I hope triple d’s can have some more shows as the club is certainly suited for it and the 1st was a success i thought. lots of fun all around with people i like to hang with. good times.

Low Profile live at Triple D’s in Chicago
Saturday April 17th
with Shooting Blanks, the Cobs and the Gotards

Well, it’s Sunday afternoon. I just got off the phone with Satan and told him I’d write the show review before I left to pick him up. We’re hooking up with Hoser from Squared Off tonight to record our song for this Chicago comp. So since I broke a string at the show last night and have to record, I want to use my Ernie Ball bass so I went to Guitar Center and bought these Dean Markley ‘Jerry Only’ bass strings. I can’t wait to check em out and see how they sound.

So anyways,
The show was great. I had a lot of fun. Weber set this show up so a big thank you to him right off the bat.
I got to Triple D’s at about 8:30. Satan, the Cobs and the Gotards were all there. So we loaded in, had a quick session in my car and then went back in and chilled. Started drinking right about then and playing songs on the jukebox. This place is real nice. The room we played in seemed to be like a big dance floor area. There was a DJ booth and above the floor there were tons of lights and a disco ball and a smoke machine, etc. So the singer from the Gotards had all that shit fired up and the black lights were glowing. It looked pretty cool. A nice relaxed atmosphere. Drinks seemed a lil expensive but oh well.

The Cobs were set up to play first and started a lil around 10 I think. They were great as usual. I was sittin with Dan and Deech and all the jokes Keith was tellin and the shit he was sayin had us all cracking up for most of the show. These guys r real fun. We’ll have to play more shows with them for sure!!!!

We set up next. We go to start into Arnold Palmer and Katie Holmes and Satan breaks a string right in the first 10 seconds of the song. Pretty crazy.

We played a pretty loose set. We had the set list from our last show so we played most of the songs off of it but in a mixed order.

Arnold Palmer and Katie Holmes
Milwaukee
Zamboni
Spreading Yourself Thin (PITS)
Walter Mander
The Limitation
American Nightmare (originally by the Misfits)
King of the Hill theme
Folsom Prison Blues (originally by Johnny Cash)
Execution Style
Use Your Mind
7 T’s (^both by Guttermouth)

It was a good, fun set. Satan and I both played cordless. Everything was all good and then I broke a string during Folsom and had to run over and switch to my Ibanez bass. I broke my A string and the only thing I play on that string is a B for that song and I can play that on my top string so I finished the song off and then did the switch.

The Gotards were up next. I only got to see the last song they played. After we finished up our set and got our stuff pushed out of the way, I went outside to cool off. It was a beautiful night. So someone mentioned to me that we should try to play at the bowling alley across the street. So I mentioned it to Weber and he asked if I wanted to go there now so I said sure. We went over and had a few beers and talked to the dude behind the counter and asked about having bands play there. It seems like a possibility. We saw 4 pretty hot chicks bowling and we couldn’t tell if they were with these dudes or not. We were tempted to go over but decided against it cuz we probably would haved ended up in a fight or something.
So we went down the street to another bar and drank a few more beers and then went back on over to Triple D’s and thats about when the Gotards were finishing up. Sorry I missed ya.

Shooting Blanks played last. They rocked the house for sure and played a real good, fun set. Brey teased us with Mindfuck but they wouldn’t play it for Josh. U bastards!!!!
They played a few new songs and a few covers and everyone was havin a blast.

We hung out a lil while afterwards and just chilled. I gave out 3 Cds and a bunch of stickers. Some dude named Paul came up and was tellin me and Satan about his band he’s startin up. Contact us when your all good and ready to play shows dude. He was awesome amd very entertaining.
The turnout seemed pretty good to me. We got paid $20. Gotta luv that. I thought the sound was good in the place and would definately play there again. So hook it up Weber.

Thanks to Weber, Koz and Scott. and Dick too!!! Thanks to the singer from the Gotards for running the PA for us. Thanks to the Cobs and Shooting Blanks for being awesome and fun bands to play out with. Luv u guys. Thanks to Betty Burbank. Thanks to Jessica and Crystal. Thanks to Angel. Thanks to the cool patrons at the bar across the street. Thanks to Josh, Shaun and Robin for coming out. Good seeing u guys.
And thanks to
everyone else who was there to support the bands and had fun.

I got home around 3am. Took a quick shower, made a drink and had another quick session and then passed out till 11am Sunday morning and woke my ass up to watch some Pokemon.
I’ll be leaving to pick up Satan for our recording session in about half an hour. Thanks for reading………

Show #66: Mutiny, Chicago

Low Profile live at the Mutiny in Chicago
Thursday April 1st
with Sparring

Great fucking day all around!!!!
Worked my 8 hours, got off at 4. Went home and chilled. We all met up at Rob’s at 8 and sat around watching the Gator Stoked DVD for a bit. Then we decided to start loading up and get on the road.
I got prime parking right in front. Satan and I loaded in. Paul, who booked us wasn’t there yet. But Allison, the bartender remembered seeing us play the Fireside with the Perps a few years ago. Pretty cool to run into her again. Paul showed up with his band and we all started bullshitting about our shows together and what everyone was doing. It was really great to see and play with his band, Sparring.
So the first band set up started their set. I swear they played like 15 minutes. It was pretty weird. Their style was very noisy. They had 2 guitars and drums. No bass. Pretty strange. Eorl told me that this was their first show and thats why they didn’t play very long. I guess they don’t really have too much stuff to play. We played second. I had a ton of room to move around in. Satan and Rob were crammed onto one of the lil stages and I had the whole other one to myself. I thought everything sounded good. I could hear everything clearly. Our set was something like this:

Arnold Palmer and Katie Holmes
Zamboni
Chimerical
Spreading Yourself Thin (PITS)
The Limitation
Walter Mander
American Nightmare (originally by the Misfits)
King of the Hill theme
Folsom Prison Blues (originally by Johnny Cash)
Milwaukee
Execution Style
Hybrid Moments (originally by the Misfits)
In The Zone

We rocked the fucking house! We added a few songs in there. Satan went right into the King of the Hill theme after American Nightmare unplanned and then went right into Folsom. The crowd loved it. Then after Execution Style, Paul is telling us that we can play 2 or 3 more songs. So I say we’ll play another Misfits song and ask what everyone wanted to hear. First I heard 20 Eyes but we don’t play that. Then I heard Angel yell out Attitude but we know it but don’t really enjoy playing it. Someone called out Last Caress. I would have been a lil rusty on that one. Then someone called out Hybrid Moments and Satan told him to come up and sing it. I don’t know this dudes name but he was cool about it. He took my mic and I didn’t know what to expect but he knew all the words and actually sang it pretty well and stayed in time with us considering he may not even be in a band and has never seen us or played with us before. So props dude. That was cool. Thanks for joining us for that song.
Then we were standing around and Jessica is calling out Mr. Pig and then Paul yells out In the Zone. We haven’t played that song in months but we did it anyways. It may have been a lil rusty on my part but it was still good. I gave a good intro by saying ‘this song is about smoking weed.’ Everyone cheered. U gotta luv that.
Sparring played last and took their time setting up. So I proceeded to drink and drink and drink. We just hung out and talked with everyone.
Sparring also play a very weird style of music. Long instrumental songs. They jam for sure. They all had a ton of pedals all over the place. They were crazy for sure. It was their second show.
We hung out a while after that. Kept drinking and mingling. We got paid $20 which sucks cuz u can’t split it 3 ways. So we all got $5 and then we had 2 sessions of rock/paper/scissors. First me and Satan went at it best of 3 and I won. So then I took on Rob and he beat me 2 in a row. So he got the extra fin. I suck!!! I can never win!! J/K. I had a blast. Thanks to Ed the owner. Allison and the other bartender chick. The hot chick watching the door and the dude who helped direct me drive my car out from being boxed in. Paul for inviting us out to play the show. Thanks to Jessica(good pics!!!), Angel, Eddie and his cousin, Andrew and Bill Knobs, Carrie and her crew, that dude who came up to sing Hybrid Moments, Nikki(Kurt). And everyone else who dug our set and cheered us on. I gave out a bunch of stickers so we should be getting some more hits on our site. Sorry we didn’t have CDs to give out. So thats it. Thanks for a great night.

–hilger

well back aroudn 1999 we met a band called the perps when we got booked with them at the fireside. we ended up playing a bunch of shows with them and they were really a bunch of great people. they got us some killer shows as well and they were always a joy to hang and jam with. well somewhere along the line we lost touch with them and then i guess their band broke up in 2001.

well about a month before this show, i got a weird email. it was from paul, the guitarist from the perps! it was a mass email he sent out (probably used the old perps mailing list) advertising for his new band and the launch of their site. i immediately emailed him back to congratulate him on the new band and ask him what was up. he ended up asking me if we wanted to play a gig with him right away and i was very eager to take it. luckily, we had no schedule conflicts and we took the gig.

the date of the show came around. we watched some awesome footage of jason jessee and gator rogowski skate in a pool on dvd at robs which got me pumped up. we loaded out and me and jessica rolled to the club. we copped some good parking and i took my shit inside. onyl 3 bands for the night which was awesome. the 1st band was already there and even half set up (we had already agreed with paul to play 2nd, and sparring 3rd.) i sat down at the bar and watched the door waiting for paul to walk thru, i was very excited to see him again for the first time in years. later i saw hilger and he asked if i said hello to paul. i was surprised that he somehow got into the club and around my watchful eye. he pointed him out. well lets say this. both me and paul have alot more hair then we did back in the day. while my shit is long his is curly and huge. i was actually nervous to approach him. me and hilger used to joke back in the day that paul was one of the nicest guys ever (which is absolutely true). hilger assured me that nothing had changed in the department. i approached him and gave him a hug and we caught up a bit. we later took a pic outside the club. good times.

well the first band went on and their set lasted like 10 minutes. i couldnt believe it was over so fast, but i have no arguments on that level. i was ready to jam! we ran up and set up our shit and before you know it we were rollin! eddie, one of hilgers old friends had showed up! he hadnt seen us in years either, and he even had seen us with the perps back in the day! he was right up front with his cousin — who incidentally works with wally, the ex-bassist from smear campaign. small world. and while were on the ‘small world’ subject….when i walked in a girl approached me and said ‘youre in low profile’. i asked how she knew that. she said that she went out with paul for like 3 years and had seen us play with them numerous times. then she told me that she bartended there, at the mutiny! turns out she was pauls contact for getting the gig.

‘arnold palmer and katie holmes’ i consider to possibly be my masterpiece of song writing but it can be hard to follow the math break and you have to do severe counting or youll throw off the whole band and ruin the song. we practiced it plenty ahead of time and opened with it — no flaws to speak of. it started getting a little hot in the back there but we forged on thru the set. we played ‘american nightmare’ one of my favorite misfits songs which we only recently learned. i dont remmeber what was actually on the set next but the rockabilly feel of that song inspired me to fuck the set list and roar into the theme from ‘king of the hill’ and then segue into ‘folsom prison blues’. it was definately a good idea. then we started asking for requests for more misfits songs. this one dude called out ’20 eyes’. i love that song but its one of few we dont know as a band. i told him to pick another and he chose ‘hybrid moments’. i told him to come up and sing backups or whatever. i was pretty tired and was hoping he could float the vocals for a minute while i caught my breath. ill put it this way — i dont think he could have carried the whole song very well by himself, but when he followed my lead he did absolutely great!

after the show i chugged a bunch of 7up and felt pretty exhausted. i louged around for a while at the bar with andrew and bill from the powerknobs (here with paul) who graciously came out to see us play. i was at the front of the bar by the front door and kind of boxed in which i liked since i was super tired and couldnt catch my breath from extreme thrashing. my neck was totally fucked also. i figured i ought to get some photos of sparring so i went up there. i had told paul i wanted to do this (as i take pics of all bands we play with usually) and he was equally as excited to get copies of the pics.

well i got to the back of the club and the first thing i notice is there is some passed out dude. i saw him earlier with his head in his hands leaning on a chair like a scrub. now he was laying across a bunch of chairs and his flailing legs had kicked our amps and kicked over my guitar cases. i yelled at him ‘hey watch it! what the fuck is wrong with you?’. no response, he was out cold. i put my gear back and kicked his feet hard. no response.

then i went up towards the band to take a quick 5-10 pics. i took a few and sparring was jamming. this this dude taps me on the arm. i turn around to see what he wants and he says ‘you doing that [taking the pics] is tottaly detracting from what they [the band] is trying to do’. as if they are some higher level of art and taking pics is not allowed? i dont fucking know. or care. i told him that it was never in my plan to stand there taking pics for more then 5 minutes anyways, and that also he is no fucking authority to be reprimanding me for taking pics. of course he clammed up then and nothing else to say. i took a few more pics out of principle and then rolled out.

we ended up getting paid $20 when i expected nothing. although there was a decent crowd i figure 10 other people or parties deserve the cash more then me or my band. but we took it and split it up. great show overall, what a blast. thanx for the gig paul. long live sparring!!!

Show #65: Lyons Den, Chicago

CHECK OUT THE LIVE RECORDING HERE

Well we played here once before last December. Lyons Den is a nice venue becasue its very loud and has good sound. Last time they recorded us too because they have a cd burner hooked up to the board. Well I was counting on this so I brought another blank CD because getting that recording is very important to me. I got there good and early and loaded in. I approached the sound man and another guy who well call ‘the bouncer’. He even almost looked like the sound mans brother. I asked them about it and they said they couldn’t do it, and to ask Darius why. Darius is a british guy that runs Criminal IQ records and also works for/runs ‘punk rock night’, a promotion company that books friday nights at Lyons Den as well as some other clubs not in Chicago. Darius wassnt there yet but they said he would be soon. In the meantime I was chillin with ‘the bouncer’ and the sound man by the sound booth. ‘The bouncer’ was listening to demos that bands had sent him (they were trying to play weeknights, not on ‘punk rock night’). Now we listened to one band that was some kind of country. Now I’m not too much into country personally. But this guy was basically listening to a demo with me standing there (listening thru the PA) and he was dissing it! Thats very unprofessional. Why would you do this in the 30 min. before a show anyways? Wouldn’t you do this at your house privately? I joked along like ‘yeah….they, like…suck, right?’. I couldnt believe the guy was going to be unprofessional like this and let me, some jerk off he basically didnt know, sit there and rip the bands with him! I was trying to be nice so I could convince them to record me since they had already said they hadnt. This was only the start of the unprofessionalism I would experience that night from many different representatives of the Lyons Den.

Darius then arrived. I asked him why and he explained that another organization called www.destroyyourradio.com was recording the show on DAT for their site. They only had 1 output from the board with which to record. Heres another instance of bad professionalism. Many bands, espically those that have never dealt with people like this, think they are at eveyrones mercy, etc… and try to go along with everything. My point is that I should have my permission asked before you broadcast my music on the net. Let me also now say that I dont give a shit, and dont need to give permission but thats not the point. Other bands would be like ‘free promotion! wow!’ and agree to everything. Well in this game you dont just agree to whatever bullshit you are offered. Anyways, I didn’t want to cause any more waves with anyone and said fine. I was thinking that I didn’t much care if I was broadcast on some website, because obviously this meant waiting weeks to hear it for probably a short amount of time, possibly having the material get ‘lost’…I’m the type of person that wants to get my own hardcopy immediately. By my own plan, I could have the set edited and ready to go on my own site by the end of the next day. I dont trust others with unique copies of this that no one else has. I explained this to Hilger and he echoed my secret sentiments right away. He said fuck that website, tell them you dont care about it and you want a CD. Then I knew I had to do it, since we both agreed.

A note about www.destroyyourradio.com. This is run by the guys from a Downers Grove band called Destroy EVerything. A long time ago I got their cd for free with an order from RElevation Records (they have nothing to do with them). BEing a free CD I didnt care for it, but for whatever reason I actually put it on…and it was really good! I ended up doing some reasearch and couldnt believe when I found out the band was local! I wrote an email to them and corresponded with one of the members and they were really cool. I got my tattoos from a place in Downers Grove and it ended up they not only knew him, but were good friends and had even played gigs at his shop! So nothing I’m saying here is intended in disrepsect for this band. They are a serious band that tours nationally and has been playing for a long time. It seems they even run www.destroyyourradio.com for nothing just as a service to the local scene, and I’ve even checked out the site and its a really cool format and works great, and I heard some good tunes from bands I never heard of which is the whole point. I dont like how this was presented to me as if I am expected to OK any possibly involvement with audio recordings of my group. We are not a band in the race for maximum exposure expecting 100 people to buy our albums. I personally dont give a fuck for that whatsoever. The people that are going to come to a Low Profile show or buy an album are going to do so because of direct or indirect involvement with members of the band personally. I have learned this over a 6 year period of recording and playing shows with the group. I am not one to count out promotion out of some ‘principle’ or anything like that either however. I respect these guys because of a body of work that I have seen to be professional and quality in nature. Also my own limited personal encounters with the band members. The bottom line is that a) I should be asked before having my recordings shipped off for some website, b) My first priority is with my own hardcopy of the music. I know personally that a number of bands slated to be played on the site are unaware of this entirely. Im not saying this as a threat, but you would think that people would take more precautions then to broadcast copywritten matierial without expressed written consent or at least verbal acknowledgement. The band themselves may have little to nothing to do with any of that and I dont claim they do. I’m not going to take ‘no’ for an answer when I’m told I cant be recorded for myself but can be recorded for someone else. In the end my persistance and willingness to be threatend and berated worked out and I pulled it off.

So I approached Darius about it again. Now I was getting annoying but figured it was worth it for the CD. We’ve played many many shows and dont get recorded regularly. Since I knew they had the capacity to do it, I can’t pass it up. I told him I didn’t care about the website and wanted my own CD still. I admit I was taking it a bit far but in retrospect it was well worth it since I got what I wanted. I had to pay a bit of a price for it but that price was small overall. Anyways, me and Darius were standing next to the sound booth and he finally agreed and told the sound man to disconnect the DAT and just CD-R us. The sound man agreed. Darius was getting pissed at me now because he said he had to run out before the show started (when he would return) and also that he had just come from a funeral. Well he told the sound man to do what I wanted and then left the club. As soon as he was out of eyesight/earshot, the sound man went into an extended rant on me personally and how i was a ‘dick’ and ‘this is bullshit.’

Time to sidetrack about sound men. I work for the phone company. I am part of the IBEW which is a global union. I’m not saying I work hard but its what I consider to be a ‘legit’ job. Who am I to decide? Fuck you! You must be a sound man. Rob is a graphic designer. Hilger makes/installs conveyer belts. These are ‘real’ jobs. I’m sure many of you reading this have ‘real’ jobs. BEING A SOUND MAN IS NOT A ‘REAL’ OR ‘LEGIT’ JOB!. Getting to hang out in a club and listen to punk rock and get paid is cake. I dont want to hear you bitch or moan ever. Also, I have a degree in sound engineering. This is a bachelor of arts that qualifies me to do similar work. So I know quite well (or good enough at least) the ins and outs,e tc…. My fucking point is that this guy was super put out to have to do something he didnt’ want to do (though his boss (Darius) told him to) and now I was the scapegoat. He was making like his fucking job was terrible and whatnot. My brother is also in the IBEW — he works for ComEd and reads meters. He was to walk almost 20 miles a day sometimes. Also in the freezing cold of winter. Now THATS a hard job. When you can drink beers at work and get paid in cash, this is not a REAL job. I dont have pity for how hard you work. I just dont give a fuck.

Well this asshole starts going off on me becasue I had pestered Darius to do what I wanted and now he had to do it. I told him that I had been cordial with him the whole time and there was no reason to call me a dick or anything else. He told me how ‘it was a free country, and thats the reality of it!’. I explained that while I could call everyone a dick, sometimes I choose not to because it serves no purpose, and you dont have to be that way with everyone you meet when its unwarranted. I made the mistake of using an analogy that ‘you dont have to call everyone, or you friends or someone you want to be friendly with, names for no reason’. He told me that ‘we arent friends!’. Listen, I’ve punched many people in the mouth for different things and I’ve been punched and kicked and choked for many more reasons. I’ve been called worse and I’ve done worse then discuss it with people that werent nice to me. I dont mean that to brag, I’m just saying that asking why he was being so mean isnt my usual plan of attack. BUt I was really shocked at how pissed he was about unplugging the DAT and plugging in the cd burner for our set. I couldnt conjure up any anger, I was really confused by his wild name calling, etc… I eventually just handed him the blank CD and left him the fuck alone with his bitterness.

Well I had enough of him and walked away. I lounged around before the show and tried to forget about it. I had a few drinks and then the first band started. They were called Remember the Tiger Tales. They had 2 guitars and 1 was the singer. They were total garbage. They played like they didnt give a fuck and it sounded that way. They were using clean guitar tones and it sounded like shit. I can listen to lots of noisy bands, etc… but this was trash and they knew it. They knew they sucked and they were obviously trying to play off of it like it was their gimmick. I listened to 1 1/2 songs and went back to the bar.

Hilger had seen this Misfits cover band called Last Caress over the summer. I had also heard their name around everywhere and Hilger said the show was great. Well some dude came up to us in the bar and gave us flyers for a Last CAress show at Cals. I am pretty obessed with the Misfits and weve been known to play upwards of 10 covers at certain drunken shows. So this guy said his name was Scott and he was the singer. The thought immeidatley came to mind — I was just meeting this guy right there — to have him come up and sing with us on a cover. We told him we would suprise him and he agreed. He was a really nice guy and it was an exciting prospect.

Well we went on 2nd. The set was fucking flawless if I dont say so myself. WE busted out some obscure older songs that had never been recorded live before. We played ‘Astro Zombies’ with Scott from Last Caress 2nd to last and the crowd fucking dug it big time. He was definately right on. After the show he had the balls to tell me that we could have ‘been more creative’ with our song choice. I like that kind of a challenge and next time I’m going to learn a super rare obscure song to challenge him back. This guy is a master musician. Last, we covered a Smear Campaign song ‘Hulk for PResident’. This was our 2nd show with Smear Camp, we met them about exactly a year earlier when booked with them at the Fireside. As many people know, we have a thing for covering our friends bands songs and playing them live when booked with them. ITs always a huge surprise and they freak out and its really fun. We rehersed this one for weeks in advance and I called Matt on stage and he sang it, fucking priceless.

This leads to yet another beef that was created that night. Before the 1st band played, someone put up these huge paper posters which were blown up photos of a band rehersing all over the stage. They were on every monitor and like 3 on each mic stand. I assumed they were some shit for the 1st band but started to wonder. They were like silly poses and stuff. I thought about it for like 10 seconds then decided I would not play with this bullshit representing me. We play pretty serious music and I’m espically serious person (musically at least). My words are important to me and I’m not trying to project somekind of joking bullshit ass music. I violently ripped the posters down and threw them on the ground below.

While we played our set I had a first. I actually got bottles thrown at me. Once again the Lyons Den security was completely lacking here. The bottles continued without stopping thru the set. My hair mostly blocks my vision when I play and I cant see the crowd so well. One bottle hit me in the shoulder. One whizzed by my head I was told and at least 1 more hit the stage in front of me. They werent throwing bottles at low profile, they were throwing them at satan165. Thats understandable, since I shake shit up like a rock tumbler. I am a true fucking revolutionary. Im among the elite dynamic musicians you have ever seen. I would be salty too if I was upstaged by a wild and awesome musician. Near the end of the set I addressed it on the mic and said that they throw terribly and called them ‘bitch ass tricks’. You can DL the recording and hear for yourself. Strangely the bottles stopped after that. Funny that no one approached me to knock me out after the gig, looks like its easier to throw bottles at someone who is not paying attention then punch a dude out that you dont like when hes in front of your face. Fucking fags. IF youre reading this why dont you fuck yourself in the ass. Pussy ass bitches.

After the show I was handing out free CDs like always. One guy was giving me some props and I gave him a CD. Then he said how he was friends with teh 4th band and why did I rip those posters down. I saw the possibility of getting rolled on right there and broke out back with a posse by the bar.

So far, Ive annoyed Darius, had the sound man call me a ‘dick’, had bottles thrown at me and had this guy almost threaten me as well for ripping down those gay posters. Well I wasnt done for the night! Oh no! It keeps on!!!

I had the bright idea to get my own burned cd from the cd player in the sound booth real quick rather then fuck with the asshole sound man again. I looked and seen a cd burner. I know it was because I saw the ‘finalize’ button on it. Now how many cd burners could they possibly have back there? this had to be the one. I hit ‘eject’ and the music playing over the PA inbetween bands stopped. My heart froze and I think I might have audibly said ‘oh fuck’. The sound man whipped around (he was on stage micing shit or whatever for the next band) and he seen me dead on. There was no place to hide. He raced down and came straight at me. He grabbed me by teh shirt and went off with a bunch of what I call ‘big talk’. MEaning that he never did do any of the things he so earnest promised me. Such as: killing me, beating me up, etc… HE said I was a ‘pussy’ and a ‘bitch’. I felt stupid since I did stop the music but didn’t much like this grabbing of my shirt thing. I stuck my face so close to his our noses touches and kept repeating ‘what are you going to do?’. AFter about 3 times he let me go and walked away. Then I hit in a crowd before ‘the bouncer’ bounced me for fucking with gear.

Well then I made my wild appeal to Darius, who had already had enough of me for the night. First I tried to build my own case. I explained how right after he had walked away before the show, the sound man called me a dick and whatnot. He was a little shocked I must say. (He didnt know about me stopping the cd). Then I explained how I was very silly and did a very silly thing with the cd player. But I said how he grabbed me and threatened me. HE said not to worry about that guy and he was a little off kilter. He even recounted a story that I had actually experienced first hand. I saw the Phenoms play at the Lyons Den and the singer John opened the back door during the set and also opened the doors to some cabinets that house the power amps for the PA. He didnt break anything. He didnt touch anything. The sound man flipped out like nothing else and ran full stride with a salty look on his face to the stage like he was going to save the day. Well now I had come clean with Darius so I told him that he would have to get my cd fromthe burner. Now he got pissed. I had literally been bugging him about this for hours and also had made a lot of problems in general about it. HE told me that I was very annoying. I acknowledged him and again politely asked for my cd. He finally got it and I ran and put it in my car. Then I had a good laugh to myself for all teh shit I had gone thru to get it. WEll it sounds awesome and was well worth it. Hey sound man. You are a douche bag. When I am your age (35 approx i would guess) i will own my land in orlando and own my condo nearly as well. I will not be making $50 a night in cash. You are bitter at the world becasue of it and because you watch bands rock out (including me) and you dont get any glory or credit like the bands. I went to school with people like you for 4 years and I know your type inside and out. You also pussied out at the showdown and refused to hit me tho you threatened to. What exactly were you waiting for? Fuck you!!!

Smear campaign played then. They had their old 2nd guitarist Chris back which was awesome. Also they have a new bassist, Dan, that wasnt in the band a year before when we met them. But Ive seen Smear Camp a bunch of times since then and already knew Dan. I even saw a show where Chris played in a on a few songs. But never a full set with the full new lineup. It was remarkable stuff.

Last up was a band called Farkus. I guess this was a ‘reunion’ show. Early in the night we were surpised to see Eorl. Eorl is an old friend who we met at the Fireside a very long time ago. He has come out to a bunch of shows since then. We saw him and I said thanx for coming but he then explained he was there to perform with Farcus. He said he wasnt an original member but would be playing bass tonite. Well in the end I’m not too keen on Farcus. Its hard for me to say that maybe without dissing Eorl but this needs to be said. What you fucking wear on stage and the props you bring up and how much of a mess you make isnt all that cool when your band and your songs are worthless. This band brought a bunch of acoustic guitars and basses which they smashed. The guy that had kind of threatened me for ripping down the posters was wasted and even trying to smash an acoustic bass in the bar area earlier. Again, big ups to Lyons Den secutiry for letting this go on. Luckily the thing was too strong and he didnt break it, but I could imagine spliters of wood coming at my fucking face. This is not the type of thing you should generally allow people to do in your club. Well this band got cut off after like 10 minutes. Partially for smashing shit and partially because it was getting to the end of the night. Which raises another bogus thing about Lyons Den, they close early and kick people out like Nazis. They get hardcore and really run you out quick which sucks. Well this band shattered like 100 bottles on the floor and broke a ton of guitars. The guitars actually looked nice and shit too, I dont understand the whole thing. I would have liked to just take one home, because you see I’m a little strange like that. I have guitars in my house on stands that I actually play, because I like to play guitar and want to improve. I know its a radical idea. They just wasted a bunch of guitars to look cool but I think its pretty fucking lame.

HEres the thing, bands love to throw bottles and wear crazy clothes and break shit etc…Now if you have some good songs that you play properly and all that it can make you cooler. But when you suck and dont care about your songs it makes you lamer. So breaking shit and all these gimmicks are not always the right thing to do. Just some advice to throw out there.

Also showed up was John, once of the Yellow Snowmen. WE have known John for many years from the scene and hes been in a bunch of bands of numerous styles. We played with the Yellow Snowmen back in like 1998 and its good that we still talk with him and hes just a great guy. Hes also friends with Eorl so he had double reason to come out that night and I’m glad he did. HEs a person that I know I can just level with about music or bands or the scene because hes been around as much if not more then me, and hes always cordial and a down to earth person. I was really glad to see him. Here he is with Eorl.

Right before they kicked everyone out, Darius comes up to me and says ‘Theres no money’. I asked him what the fuck he was talking about and he repeated himself — and so did I. Then he explained no bands were going to be paid. Which is a joke since the place was packed and they were charging an outrageous $7 to get in. When I asked further he couldnt explain why. Now weve probably made zero dollars at 80% of shows. But many had a small draw or some other apparent reason why we shouldnt (or the other bands) be paid. They made a lot of money that night and he couldnt explain where it went. I’m not saying that Darius stole the money or something like that, I more blame the Lyons Den then him as hes pretty honest I think and wouldnt lie or whatever.

I emailed the guys from www.desroyyourradi.com the next day and explained the situation and said I would still like to be featured on their site, and could gladly make the material available to them immediately. They said that would be fine and Hilger has probably already shipped them their CD by the time you read this.

This was one of the wildest shows ever and we all agreed that getting bottles thrown at you, at least in the context in which they were thrown at me that night, was legit credibility and that our performance most importantly was of the higest quality. We all had a ton of fun despite some BS. I’ve had my share and themsome of BS in my experiences of playing gigs with Low Profile so I long ago learned to forget about it and enjoy the shit. You will never hear me (or probably any of the rest of the band) say that a show ‘sucked’ despite whatever. We come to rock everytime no matter what and I will always throw down 110% no matter if you whip a bottle at my head or threaten me. Or if 100 or 1 person shows up. We’ve seen quite a bit and little is new to us so bring on your roadblocks for our good time, because we will fucking steam roll over them.

Low Profile live at Lyons Den
February 20th
with Smear Campaign, Remember the Tiger Tails and Farcus

What a fucking show!!!!!!!
I took a half day at work and left around 11:30. I went, cashed my check, picked up some Johnnys beef on North Ave for lunch, went home, ate, played some bass to warm up, watched American Beauty, took a nap, and then showered before I went to meet the guys at 7. We loaded up and headed to the club. We got to the Den a lil after 8 and we were the first band people there. Satan and I ordered up a drink and chilled at a table. I played some songs on the jukebox. Some more band people showed up and the place started to pack up. Satan had some drama with the soundman but I’ll let him explain all that.
So while we were sitting around, this dude comes up and gives us a flyer for a Last Caress show coming up at Cal’s. He introduces himself as Scott the singer. I didn’t recognize him cuz when I saw them play, he wore the full makeup. So we started bullshitting a lil bit and then we came up with a plan. We told him that we were going to call him up on stage and put him to the test. We scraped Lachrymose in our set and added a Misfits song but we didn’t tell him which one. We threw around a few song ideas but all agreed on doing Astrozombies. That way, he could hear the beginning music and get himself ready to sing the lyrics. We were all real excited about doing it and having a guest singer on stage who we just personally met that night and have never played a single song with. I’ll say right now that it was awesome but I’ll touch on it some more later on in my review. Props. Scott u rule!
So a lil after 10, the first band, Remember the Tiger Tails start their set. They are a 4 piece with 2 guitars. The singer/guitarist played lefty and played the whole show in his underwear. Now that I think about it, I think he walked around most of the night in his underwear. Anyways, I wasn’t feelin this band too much. They seemed to sound or just play very sloppy. So I watched the first 2 sons and got bored and headed out to get another drink and mingle it up with some people. Satan came and found me and we ran out to my car for a quick session. We were due to play second.
So Tiger Tails take a while breaking their shit down and getting it off the stage and out of the way. The singer/guitarist asked me if they could leave their amps on stage and I gave him a simple ‘NO’. I mean, my amp wasn’t on stage while u played. They kept stalling so I just started hauling their amps and guitar cases off the stage and moving them out of the way. I think they got a lil mad but I didn’t give a fuck. There were these signs hanging up on all the mic stands and on the monitors and stuff with pictures on them and Satan asked me what they were. I had no clue so he started ripping em off the mic stands. I guess that pissed some people off and he’ll touch on that in his review. Again, I couldn’t give a fuck. When u play, do what u want. Bring whatever u want on stage. If u need props, thats fine, bring em up with u. But when Low Profile is set to take the stage, get your shit outta the fucking way. I don’t want your fucking promotional pics hanging on our mics while we play. I don’t need any extra amps on stage giving me less room to move around. To me, thats all just common courtesy. We set up and break our shit down quick and get out of the way for whoever is up next. So enough bitching about that.
We set up and get ready. Our set was:

Outspoken
Character Profile
Chimerical
The Limitation
Walter Mander
Astrozombies (by the Misfits. with Scott from Last Caress on vocals)
Carl Panzram
Hulk For President (by Smear Campaign. with Cactus Matt on vocals)

We rocked the fucking house. Our set was super tight. The live recording came out great. And since I knew we’d be recording live again, I picked some songs we haven’t recorded live as of yet. They all came out great. I was the most excited about Chimerical and I want to throw that in our set for the next few shows. That song is awesome.
Kurt, or Nikki as we call him cuz he looks like Nikki Sixx came up on stage and gave us a good introduction but I don’t think it got recorded.
Astrozombies was fucking great. We called Scott up and introduced him. He grabbed my mic but there was still a mic for me in the middle so I got to do a lot of backups. The crowd was really hyped when we started the song. Many people were singing backups and it just felt great. Having Scott’s added energy on stage really got everyone going. Especially me. After that, the crowd wanted us to play more Misfits. I was considering it but we went back to our original set. And then for our last song, we covered Hulk for President in tribute to Smear Campaign. We really like these guys and have fun hanging out and playing shows with em. We learned it a few weeks ago and jammed it at practice a few times but with no vocals besides for the choruses cuz Satan and I couldn’t figure em all out. So when it came time to start the song, Cactus Matt was nowhere to be seen. We called for him on the mics and he ended up staggering up to the stage from the bar with a fresh drink decked out in his Mardi Gras garbs and beads. We started the song and he did all the vocals. It was fucking great. I hope u guys enjoyed it.
I felt real good after the set. We tore our shit down off stage and went for more drinks. I got a lot of props from everyone on how tight our set was. Thanks a ton. It felt great.
Smear Campaign were up next. Jimmy borrowed some of Rob’s cymbals for the show I guess cuz his car was parked a few blocks away. They were all dressed in silly Mardi Gras party type clothes and were sporting many plastic beads. I’m sure they saw many more male boobs than female boobs but it was all in good fun. At some point in the night, Lumpy was getting hauled out of the club by the bouncers and on the way out, I asked him what happened and I think he said something about going behind the bar and pouring himself a drink or something like that. I’m not sure exactly but it was pretty funny. Anyways, Smear Campaign rocked. They did a lot of their originals and covered Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols near the end of their set. I think they ended with Kill Somebody, Go to Jail. Seeing them play with 2 guitars is the shit. I’ve seen em play with just Paul on guitar and they still rocked but two guitars really polish their sound and add to the energy on stage. They played a good, tight set.
Farcus was doing some sort of reunion show and they were up last. Our buddy Eorl walked in with these guys and said he was playing bass with them for the show even tho he wasn’t an original member. Normally he plays drums and has been in a few bands I’m sure but he said that he can play bass better than their drummer and thats how he got to play this gig with them. These guys brought in a bunch of acoustic guitars and ended up smashing them all and totally destroying the whole room and stage area up. It was a disaster area. I think they only got to play like a 20 minute set or something. Well, it seemed the club owner or bossman and Darius were a lil pissed. I don’t really blame them. At the end of the night, the club workers had to clean all that shit up. They were sweeping shit up into a fucking shovel. Darius didn’t seem to happy about the whole night when I went to go say goodbye to him. I’m not gonna even comment any further on that shit. It just seems a lil excessive, out of line and is uncalled for. Oh well. It’s over and done.
Besides all that, I had a really fun night. Satan and I left together and dropped our shit off at Rob’s and then we chilled at his condo and watched the Bottle Rocket short 13 min film he downloaded which is fucking awesome. And of course we had to have another session to unwind while we listened to the live recording. It came out really well. Can’t wait to get my copy Satan, wink wink. Drop that shit off soon.
So here I go with my thankyous for the night. Thanks to Darius, the soundman, who was cool to me, but not so much to Satan. Smear Campaign. Ross and Andrew from the Powerknobs, Johnny and Betty Burbank, Hoser, Rocky Suba and Dan, Jessica and Crystal, all for coming out. Also the singer/guitarist from MOTO, and the guitarist from the Phenoms. I don’t know your names but know your faces. Thats about it. I’m done. Cya round.

Show #63: Lyons Den, Chicago

GET THE LIVE RECORDING HERE

Low Profile live at the Lyons Den in Chicago
Friday December 12th
with Burnside Bridge, Shooting Blanks and the Cobs

Awesome fucking show. Actually, all day was pretty great.

I took off of work that day, slept late, went Christmas shopping, scored some good weed, ate down some Russells bbq, chilled and watched Blow and then picked up Lisa and headed to the show. Lisa and I were the first people there. I know, I’m a dork. Williams showed up a lil later with Jessica. Then all the other band folks showed up. We all chilled and chatted until it was time to set the stage up. I got our free drink tickets from the bartender and distributed them amongst my bandmates. 2 free drinks a piece. Pretty cool. We were up first. We did a soundcheck around 9. We played Boat Dreams From the Hill by Jawbreaker.

Earlier in the evening, I was chatting with Robin and Shaun about guitars and strings and stuff like that. I cursed myself by saying that I hardly ever break a string cuz I broke one during Outspoken. Luckily, I always bring a backup bass so I just ran over and grabbed my Nikki bass and got it set up to go. Dan was happy. He asked if I was gonna play that bass for the show and I said no but I ended up playing it anyways. So our set was:

Arnold Palmer and Katie Holmes
Outspoken
Think About It
Hate
Grudge
Figure It Out
Execution Style

We rocked out for sure besides for me wasting precious time with my broken string and fucked up input jack. Sorry people. I’ll get that shit fixed right away. Both me and Williams jumped off stage and ran around using our wireless systems to the fullest. We got to record this show live so we’ll probably have copies for some of u. Talk to the Bossman about it.
Bossman gave out a bunch of CDs and stickers. I gave out my last tshirt to a new fan who came with Cactus Matt and seemed to really dig us.

The Cobs were up next. They r 3 piece. They spend half the time on stage telling jokes and stories and trying to make u think or laugh. The songs they play r pretty funny. Some r strictly novelty but make u crack up. I really liked Your Brain is Made of Wood and Punch U In the Face. They really know how to entertain!!!!! Great guys all around. But were they on PCP???????
hahahahahahaha

Burnside Bridge were up next and it was truly their night. It was their CD release party. I got a free CD and bought a shirt from Josh. Great set all around guys. This was our 4th time playing with them and I like them a lil more each time we play or hang out with them. They covered Horror Business by the Misfits and Williams, me and Cactus Matt jumped onstage to sing along. Cactus Matt jumped on stage a few times to sing along. Their set was just…..great. We luv u guys!!!!

Shooting Blanks were up last. At this point, it was after 1 probably. They were all pretty drunk but they always rock. They played 2 new songs and covered Wish by Nine Inch Nails and Nikki (Kurt) ran up and sang their rendition of Home Sweet Home by Motley Crue. We had a great time watching, heckling and singing along.

I had a great night and I think everyone else did also. That show was a total success to me. Darius payed us $54.00 which was pretty awesome so we split that up right away. It covered some of the money we spent on drinks so that was good. They cut Shooting Blanks off and started kicking people out around 2am.

Alrighty, I’ll end this with my thanks yous.

Thanks to Darius and Lisa for doing all the booking. Thanks to the soundman for letting us record from the soundbooth. Thanks to Burnside Bridge, Shooting Blanks and the Cobs. Thanks to my sister and Jean. Thanks to Jessica and Lisa for taking great pics. Thanks to Cactus Matt. Thanks to Nelson from FOTPunk. Thanks to Lynn who works Lyons Den for bringing me drinks all night. She went to my highschool and I haven’t seen her since then so we shot the shit a lil about the old hs days. And thanks to anyone and everyone else who came out, paid attention and watched us. We appreciate it and had a blast. Hope u did too. Cya round.

I pumped this show up in my mind for weeks in advance. Luckily, we got the word about 1 week in advance from Josh from Burnside Bridge that we would be playing 1st which was very awesome news. I slept pretty late till around 5 pm after staying up until about 8 30am. I hadn’t had a day off in 9 days so I was so happy that this Friday I would not have to work, and I stayed up late drinking Ballantine Ale, a lil Private Stock Malt Liquor, and some Cobb Salad and Salsa Doritos. I got up at 5 and me and Jessica made a massive ‘breakfast’ (when people are supposed to eat dinner) of 5 eggs, about 15 pieces of bacon and 6 pieces of sausage, 4 pieces of toast. We had to throw some away and saved some of the bacon which I just ate an hour ago. We both felt full to the point of nearly vomiting. I showered up and we hit the road. I made my girlfriend drive so she could be a deginated driver for my drunk ass. I knew that if we were going to play first I would get real drunk afterwards, although all night I think I only had:

2 Guiness pints
1 Bass Ale Pint
2 PBR longnecks
1 shot Jagermeister (with Brey and the girl he brought, more on her later)

I was hardly buzzed so I could have easily driven myself but whatever. I got there nice and early and we snagged a good parking spot. Loaded in — Burnside Bridge and The Cobs showed up, then shortly after Shooting Blanks. Brey was going to be there late cause he was going to a Christmas party before hand.

I approched Mark the soundman and introduced myself. I explained that I knew they had a CD burner in the booth, and asked if they could record our set (which I knew them to have done before). I offered to provide the blank CD which I had brought and he said it was cool. I was glad to get that out of the way, since we were very eager to cop a live recording of the show many weeks in advnace.

We had been trying to get into the Lyons Den for a while. I maintain they have some of the best and loudest sound in the city. They have punk acts on Fridays thru a promotion called ‘Punk Rock Night’ which is a group of promoters that books for Fridays at Lyons Den in Chicago and Saturdays at some club in INdianapolis. The main dude is named Darius, who also is the CEO for Criminal IQ records. Criminal IQ has 4 bands on their roster: The Phenoms (seen em 3 times), MOTO (played with em once and saw em another time, and saw the guitarist at a random gig at the Lyons Den in a weird conincidence), the Functional Blackouts (just met one of the members online) and another band called Veedee which I’m sure is a great band but I know nothing about. The first time we played with MOTO at the Fireside months ago, I met Darius (although I didn’t know his name, or that he had anything to do with Punk Rock Night at Lyons Den or Criminal IQ, and also another Criminal IQ guy named Jon. Jon later approached me at the gig since I had taken pics of MOTO for our site; he said he was there to photograph MOTO also and asked if I would share my pics with him, to which I readily agreed. I spoke to Darius only briefly at the show: Smear Campaign (we just met them that night too) were playing and Matt stripped naked and whatnot, and Darius came up to me in the bar randomly and was like ‘That guy stripped his bloody clothes off!’ or something crazy in a British accent, I guess hes from England. I was drunk and just laughed about it then.

Well I had seen a few gigs at Lyons Den: the Powerknobs, Squared off the Mashers and the Phenoms (AWESOME show!!) and also Johnny Vomit (got their live recording and its FLAWLESS!!!). Another part of Punk Rock Night is that Darius or the organization in general hires ‘MCs’ to introduce the bands at what not. Well they had this cunt bitch named ‘Madame M’ or some shit as an MC and Hilger got the idea that she was the promoter (she wasnt, just a lousy MC and this is information Darius gave me myself). She acted like she was the iron fist ruling Punk Rock Night and deciding who gets to play, and even after Hilger gushed on and on about us and gave her numerous CDs, she wouldnt return phone calls or emails or anything. Well I guess Lisa (Hilgers girlfriend) did some investigative work on the Lyons Den site. She must have found the link to www.punkrocknight.com. On that site is Darius direct email and she just emailed him and told him the story and he threw us on the bill with a bunch of our friends. Not only am I extremely greatful to Darius for listening to what went down and giving us the gig (thru a non-band member at that!) but also for putting us with great friends Burnside Bridge and Shooting Blanks (although he probably didnt know we knew them, he was just throwing us in). Thank you very much Darius and also Lisa. When Darius finally approached me at the show, I immediatley remembered him from the Fireside. He explained that he runs Criminal IQ and also Punk Rock Night and I was floored. He was super kind and giving us all kinds of props, giving my gutiar props, giving Robs drums props, giving our music props….super nice guy. I gave him a CD and thanked him profuesly as I am doing now.

Well Mark set up the mics and set levels real quick, then even let us do a sound check song. We opted for ‘Boat Dreams from the Hill’ by Jawbreaker. I wish I could get a soundcheck song at every gig, it helps me warm up so much. My voice was doing all kinds of weird shit for like the first :45 seconds of the song, then it felt some loose and I sang the rest very naturally and I was happy with my throat. The PA and monitors were so clean on the vocals that I had really good control over my voice and was able to do all types of fun shit all night long. After that I tuned my other gutiar (just in case) and tried to chill for the 45 minutes until we were set to go on.

I talked with the Cobs for a while. When I went to check out their site before the gig (I knew nothing about them, although I later found out theyve gigged with Burnside Brige many times), I found a link to none other then www.40ozmaltliquor.com run by my boy Bruz (check out the site!!!). Also for the bassist Keith’s bio, I found that he likes to ‘drink any malt liquor’. I dropped them an email and he responded and agreed that we would definately talk shop on malts at the gig. Well we did — he asked about Camo Silver Ice, the newest, strongest American 40 @ 9% and also how he had found a 40 of City Slicker in Naperville (a rare score indeed!). HE also told me how him and their gutiarist Mike had gotten drunk and eaten dog food the night before, and how now they had the shits. They asked me for my expertise and I agreed that the medication they had on hand (Immodium) would definately do the trick on curbing the massive shit attack pouring from their asspipes.

Well we eventually took the stage. We opened with ‘Arnold Palmer and Katie Holmes’. I regard this as one of our best songs and possibly my all time masterpiece of song writing. We would play it constatnly live except that it contains a very difficult jazz type of insturmental break that is very confusing and easy to get lost in (I have live once before and then we didnt play it for months until this gig). We rehersed the hell out of it in advance and we hammered it perfectly at the gig. The confusing break is based on 2 figures (well call them A and B), each with its corresponding accent.

x4 A

X4 B

and all of that takes less then a minute of the song. Well we pulled that off without a stop and then went into the 1st track on our first album ’15 Story Fireball’ called ‘Outspoken’. We hadn’t played this live maybe since like 1999, but we reheresed it plenty in advance. I had no worries about getting lost in this one. We were approaching the 3rd verse and I was thinking ahead of what the next lyrics were when I heard the bass drop out. Hilger had broken a string. Broken strings are basically unpreventable, but that bass (Ernie Ball Musicman, no less) seems to break strings easily. I cannot figure out why but this may be time for Hilger to have it serviced by a professional. I looked at Rob while I was singing and playing to see if he wanted to stop the song (we were already near 2 minutes in probably) and we decided to play thru it. Hilger grabbed his 2nd bass and transferred the strap and jumped back in probably in about 45 seconds. Only problem now is that the passive electronics of the Nikki Sixx Gibson Blackbird bass (nice as it is) has a much lower output then the active elecronics of the Ernie Ball. So the bass was a little quiet. No matter — we finished that track. A while later we played ‘Hate’, and during the end of the song I thrashed my head into my own mic which I’ve never done before. It hurt a bit but I’m not sure if anyone noticed. We ended up having to cut 2 songs from our set for time constraints. I don’t mind and understand the grand scheme of the show, but the other bands played very long sets it seems, while from our recording I estimate our set at like 29 or 30 minutes, which I construe as serious nitpicking. But I’ll let it go. We ended up closing with our third to last song ‘Execution Style’, and into the lead break at the end I jumped off the stage (wireless system baby) and played the solo in the crowd. It was pretty awesome.

AFter that I went back to the bar and pounded some more water. Then I ordered a Bass (which later ran out, so I switched to Guiness). Some chick named Trish came up to me and I must say she was a little bit of a bitch. I don’t even know her and she just walked up to me and asked if she could use my phone. Plus she said that she didnt’ even see my band. I told her she could, but that I would have to call the person myself and talk to them for a minute. I wanted to do that just to piss her off and amuse myself. The person didn’t answer but then he walked in as we were standing there. His name is Jonathan and his number is 773 685 0089. Call him and harass him. He walked in and we made some stupid conversation then Trish told him that he missed the first band. Jonathan remarked that ‘the first band usually has no talent’. Which proves he knows nothing about music. Slots are often chosen completely at random. Fuck them both. If they were a friend of someone I do know, no offense, but they were both out of hand.

The Cobs played next and they were crazy. They are a 3piece and their bassist sings. He was wasting a lot of time talking to the crowd and telling jokes which was very amusing. Then they would play a song that was like 20 seconds long. They played one song called ‘Cash Money’ (those are the only lyrics) and me, Josh and Corey from Burnside Bridge all jumped up their at Keiths request to sing along. Now Josh and Corey only knew the song since they had played with the Cobs before — but I’m such a good musician myself I was able to ‘wing it’ and figure out the song as it played. And I was assisted by the band running through the 10 second jam once to acquaint the crowd with it before they actually ‘played it’. They also played a crazy thrashing song where they called their friend from a band called the Dirtbikes up on stage to sing it. That guy and me later discussed Humboldt Park, as he grew up there and I work there often. Nice fella.

I’ve gone back and read their lyrics and they are hilarious. Me, Mike and Cactus Matt had a long talk about the Melvins, Nirvana and old school punk bands like Flipper (although I opted out of that one since I know nothing about those old bands).

After the Cobs set, me and Mike were chillin and eventually figured we should go check out Burnside although we were so relaxed in our booth up front. They rocked out and covered ‘Horror Business’ with Robin on vocals (a very nice twist) and me, Hilger and Cactus Matt all came up to sing along. I bought their CD and a shirt (cant wait to rock that at a show) and the CD was worth the wait. The engineering sounds great as do the songs.

Shooting Blanks took the stage last and this was the first time I got to see them with Deech back. ‘Simple Song’ gave me the chills hardcore. Maybe I had had just enough alcohol but I was enjoying myself so much when they played, I wish they could have played all night. Don’t buy into Matt and the rest of his bands self-depreciation; they rock out time and time again even when hammered. ‘Payback’ was awesome with Scott from Ratbag Hero up front with me singing along. They did their awesome cover of ‘Home Sweet Home’ again and Nikki from the Mutiny, who was there as MC and sang along with Matt on the song when Shooting Blanks and Low Profile played the Mutiny earlier this year, sang along again. Cactus Matt jumped up there with him as well.

It was great to see Deech again and I must admit I suddely became verklempt and a little bittersweet at thinking of the blast I had with those guys this summer filling in for Deech. What a great band they are. Good luck on your upcoming tour guys!

Brey was wasted when he showed up at the gig late into the night. He had been at some Christmas party with a chick he used to date named Janelle (I think?!?!) who was looking real hot in a nice black dress. So many people came up to me asking if I seen her tits which I definately did. When Shooting Blanks was playing, this chick was standing next to me so I just fired off the camera at her tits at close range. She objected but not much, and I didn’t give a fuck anyways. Brey was shitfaced at the bar and I bought a round of shots. When he was up there he was tanked but still played well. Except in ‘Simple Song’ he started out playing it a half step off which was hilarious, till he looked at Matt’s gutiar and fixed it. Thats the best kind of drunken fuck up.

It was freezing out, eventually I got home and unloaded my ton of shit. The live recording came out pretty good, check it out. Thanx to Amber for coming, also Scott from Ratbag Hero, Sid and Cactus Matt and Hoser from Squared Off.

Show #62: Big Horse, Chicago

Low Profile live at Big Horse Lounge
Friday November 14th
with Burnside Bridge and the Burbanks

What a fucking show!!!!!

I had a pretty shitty week so was really looking forward to playing a show, releasing some energy and drinking and having fun.
I got to Big Horse a lil before 9 with Lisa.
Josh and Cory were setting up the stage and getting the PA working.
I went and said hi to Jon and Marky. Then I went to go move my car.
Rob and Jamey showed up soon after that. I then moved my car and parked in back of the place behind Rob’s car.
Cactus Matt was there pretty early and we started drinking and bullshitting about a bunch of stuff.
A bunch of other people started arriving. Robin and Shaun, Hoffman Deech and Brey, Weber and Scott, Jessica (here with Weber and Matt), etc. Williams wasn’t there cuz he had to work that night and didn’t show up till around 11 while the Burbanks were playing. Lisa and I were saying that it felt like Low Profile wasn’t even playing cuz he wasn’t there. I felt like I was just there to see the Burbanks and Burnside which was fine but it was hard to be excited with him missing in action. Kinda strange.

Burnside Bridge played first. They rocked the house. Robin fucking rules!!! She rips crazy bass lines and plays so crazy with her hand. They all sing which is awesome and keeps things new and exciting. I’ll hear back up vocals but not see anyone in the front lines singing and then I’ll see Shaun behind the drums singing them. Pretty awesome. I didn’t take a free CD cuz I’m gonna wait till our show with them Dec 12th cuz it’s their CD release. Awesome set all around guys!!!!

The Burbanks played next. They rocked as usual!!!!
They were having a good ole time. I requested Henry the VIIIth which I don’t think was actually in their set list. Hang on, I have their set list in my crate. I’m gonna add it to my collection.
Nope. No Henry. So that was cool. I dig that cover. Thanks for playing it. And I gotta say that the ‘Low Profile’ lil song u did was fucking great. It truly touched my heart. I luv u guys. Really I do.
And I have to say that u guys really have nice trousers, nice slacks and a very fine skirt and knee highs. And nice sneakers!!!!

During their set, I snuck to the bathroom to smoke a hitter of some good green. Its pretty cool smoking up in weird places. I packed it up again for someone else but it was clogged and therefore useless. That sucked. I was plannin on hooking some peeps up. But oh well.

So Williams and I just used Jonny and Marky’s amps. Thanks a ton. I’m glad we didn’t have to bring our shit. We both got to walk in with 2 guitars and a crate each. Pretty awesome. I didn’t really care whose amp I used I just didn’t want to bring mine. Although I consider Robins amp a ‘bass rig’ and thats what I refer to it as. It’s massive.

So earlier in the night, Hoffman asked if we were gonna play any Misfits songs. I said ‘probably but we don’t have any in our set list.’ Then he asked if we’d play Halloween and I was like hells yeah but we’d have to ask Williams.

We had planned on playing 1 Pie in the Sky song and a Face to Face cover with Jamey Johnson (here, 2 drummers!) on drums and Rob on vocals but we ended up using and abusing Jamey more than that and ended up playing 5 PITS songs and I’m Trying with him on drums. It was great. It was good to throw those songs into our set. And I must say that we have not even played Green or Serial Killer in many, many months and they both seemed flawless. So our set was something like this:

Walk Don’t Run (originally by the Ventures)
Where Did U Go? (originally by the Burbanks)
Figure It Out
Hot Mom
Halloween (originally by the Misfits) for Hoffman
What I Failed To Mention
All the Wrong Reasons
King of the Hill theme
JPF (new song)
Folsom Prison Blues (originally by Johnny Cash)
Lachrymose
Milwaukee (originally by Mongoloids in Crayon Suits)
48 (requested by Jessica and Lisa)

Jamey on drums, Rob on vocals:
30 Years (originally by PITS)
I’m Trying (originally by Face to Face, RIP) for Josh

Rob back on drums:
Skulls (originally by the Misfits)
Green Corn (originally by NOFX)
1000x (originally by Face to Face, RIP) for Scott
Grudge
Mr. Pig (for Jessica, here on stage)
Sheila (originally by Shooting Blanks) Hoffslut on vocals
A Date With Destiny (originally by Guttermouth)

Jamey back on drums, Rob on vocals: (all 4 PITS songs)
Green
Coming Down
Serial Killer
Spreading Yourself Thin

I think I got everything. We only had like 10 songs on our set list, I swear. People would yell something out and we’d just play it. We added so many songs. Jonny said that we ended up playing like an hour and fifteen minutes. Thats fucking insane!!!!

I asked him how many songs we played and he said ‘Like 25’.
It ended up being 26. So you’re fucking close dude. What a call!
Jonny made us play till exactly midnight.

Matt, Brey and Deech (here, with Betty Burbank) brought us shots during our set. Everyone was going nuts. People were requesting songs left and right. It was a very fun and crazy set for sure. I was soaked in sweat and exhausted afterwards.
Rhyno arrived at some point while we were playing. I told him not to kidnap Rub a Dub Doggie. I had to check to see if he was ever missing but he was all good chillin on Jonny’s amp.

The Burbanks were surprised we covered their song. (I think this is actually some reactions to the song here!). It was a great reaction for sure. We picked a good song to do.
Throwing in the Shooting Blanks cover was a good add in to the set too. It was very fun. Hoffman joined us on stage and got rowdy with us. Truly great!

Lisa and Jessica were snapping pics. I can’t wait to see em.
Brey snapped a close up pic of each of us while we were playing and I swear it blinded me for a second. It was pretty funny.

What a fucking show!!! It was great and I had a blast. Thanks to everyone there. Thanks Jamey for hopping behind the skins for a few songs. Much luv to the Burbanks and Burnside Bridge.
Hope everyone had fun. U know I did!!!!
Cya round.

This show was unique. Johnny from the Burbanks offered it to me and said Burnside Bridge was playing. We were talking one late nite on IM and I quickly consulted a calendar and saw that I had the day off, so I tentatively accepted it. The next day I asked Rob and Hilger and they jumped at it. I told Johnny and all was well.

Until a few days later when I realized that I did NOT have the day off! This was not good because I work 4-midnight. I thought about canceling us off the show then decided that if we played last I could get out a little early and make it over there. I told Johnny about it and all seemed well.

So the day of the show I just brought my guitars to work with me. Everyday when I go to work I pick up a company car near my house in Schiller Park and drive wherever I have to go that day (all over the city), then I return it at the end of the night and jump back in my own car and go home. Well this day I didn’t do that because I knew I would go straight from work to the show. I had to cover 2 locations at work that day: 1 was at Irving Park and Laramie and the other was around Devon and Harlem. So I drove with my 2 guitars straight to Irving Park and Laramie and sat there. If I had to go to the other location I could just use a car from that location so all was well. I was planning to drive in my own car at 11 to another location at ARmitage and California and take a cab to the show (that was the closest SBC location to Wicker Park, I knew I didn’t want to deal with parking plus I would be pressed for time). Of course if something big came up at one of my 2 locations for the day at 1045 I would be fucked and have to scam my way out of it or do it quick or not do it at all, none of which should I be doing or did I want to do. I did tell my boss in advance of my dilemma and he acknowledged without saying that it would be ok for me to leave a little early (since it was unsaid, who knows what he considered ‘early’, probably later then what I considered it to be).

The day was super slow which made me even more anxious. Since I had my guitars with me I brought one inside and jammed a little bit, went thru 1000X by face to face which we planned to cover that night impromptu style (I had just reminded the band about it the day before; we hadn’t played it in months). Around 1045 I could take it no more and had nothing to do so I went to a different location at Irving Park and Kedzie and decided I would take a cab from there (didn’t feel like waiting for a cab on Saturday night in a bad neightboorhood (Humboldt Park) holding 2 guitars). I walked east and saw a cab right away and jumped in. I was about to start whipping the driver like a race horse to go faster I was getting so anxious. We came south on Damen and I just told him to stop at North and walked the rest of the way (got there for under $10 which was nice). I busted in and doubleJ (our second drummer) was manging on a taco. Burnside Bridge had already played which sucked,I missed their whole fucking set but kind of knew that I would have to. The Burbanks had been playing for maybe 10 minutes. I said hello to some peeps and chilled back in the cut with Rob. The Burbanks rocked as usual and even whipped out a crazy ‘Low Profile Theme Song’ which consisted of a nice riff in the key of E and a shouted ‘Low Profile!’ part. Thanx for the props guys. I started to get anxious again and wanted to play pretty fucking bad. Eventually, we went on.

Well we never played ‘Walk Dont Run’ until 2 weeks prior on Halloween. At that time, I wanted to bust something out that people could dig rather then me screaming about weird shit. Like many songs we know, we can not play it for 6 months then play it perfect. When you play as many shows and practices as we have, its just like riding a bike. I can bust out a song we havent played in forever, and its like my hand remembers the songs 1/2 seconds before I have to play the part and I just watch my hands moving around. Well ‘Walk Dont Run’ isnt quite that forgotten, but I came up with the idea to open with it and I dont know why at this show. I designed the whole set list (except for the 100 songs we added at the end, I’ll get to that in a second). We had learned the Burbanks song ‘Where Did you Go?’ in advance. Its become a thing we do to cover a song of a band once we play with them a bunch of times. And they all always say the same thing — ‘you played it even better then we do’ which is bullshit of course, but they’re just being nice. Well I figured it would be dramatic to open with a famous insturmental and then go right into the Burbanks song which would catch them off guard. I think it worked pretty well. I was carrying around the lyrics at work that day to memorize them as good as possible and I remembered at the last second as we were hanging the last C major of ‘Walk Dont Run’ so i unfolded the paper from my pocket with one hand and looked at them one last time. We started the song and jammd it out without fucking up, which I am always afraid we will do when covering a bands song in front of them (luckily we never really have). We threw in ‘Halloween’ for MAtt from Shooting Blanks who was nice enough to come out and see us play with Brey and even Deech who had been hiding away healing his busted bones for weeks before hand. It was a little intimidating to see him for the first time since I had played 2 shows filling in for him, I got nervous like a groupie. He thanked me for playing as if it was somekind of chore or something when in fact the 2 shows I played with Shooting Blanks were such a fucking blast, every day I am greatful that I got the opportunity to jam with them, it makes me a lil sad to think about the memories. Ok thats enough cheesyness for now, back to the set.

We played the crowd favorite ‘King of the Hill Theme’ right into a new song called ‘JPF’ about John Paul Franklin, the sick racist bastard who shot Larry Flynt ‘for printing interracial porn’ as the lyrics say. The 2 songs are both some kind of country western influcened stuff so they go together well. Just then Matt came up to me and said ‘play Folsom PRison Blues’. He said it kind of weird too, like he knew something that I didn’t; like he knew that we didn’t have it on the set list but knew that everyone would love it (they always do, it seems). AGain, its no chore for me to play Johnny Cash or Misfits songs all day and fucking night. Those 2 artists are huge influences even though you probably wont hear it in the songs we/I write. Well we jammed thru that and it was awesome. We went into another new song called ‘Milwaukee’ which we have only played live 2 or 3 times. Its actually a song by a band called Mongoloids in Crayon Suits. They are a band which was never signed or played any gigs, just weird freaks who got drunk and recorded fucked up songs on a 4-track. I got so involved in this band that I ended up corresponding with the main freak, polycarp kusch, who is from Arizona but lives in Budapest, Hungary now. He runs a couple sites: The New Absurdist and Bizarre eBooks — both sites I have work featured on, check them out. The original song is just voice and acoustic guitar. He approached me about an MCS tribute compilation and asked what song we would want to cover. I picked’Milwaukee’ right away cause its an awesome song, its about how the city of Milwaukee is sad that Jeffery Dahmer is dead. I wrote a totally new arrangement for the song, and kept the lyrics and keys and key changes intact but otherwise its our song. The compilation may never happen but this will be on our next album. I love the song and people always ask me about it and seem to like it which is good.

Well at some point we got to our planned grand finale. Josh from Burnside Bridge has made a note on their site about how he was sad that face to face broke up. We are all pretty crazy fans and have covered I’m Trying and 1000X many times at rehersal. We called up our old friend doubleJ to reherse with us a lil bit and come out to this show. He has previously played live with us for a song here and there at at least 2 shows, one was at BigWig this year; the other was at Afternight Studios and got onto a live album! He was in a band called Pie in the Sky that we used to play with and who broke up some time ago. AT certain times we were good friends with them and at others enemies. ME and doubleJ have known each other before either of us played any insturments at all, and we played in my first band together CFD. We love to jam out some Pie in the Sky songs with him and we’ve played I’m Trying also with him so it was a perfect fit for the show. Well we first went into ’30 Years’, which I swear is one of the best songs EVER, and originally by Pie in the Sky. Rob was singing as our frontperson. We went right into ‘I’m Trying’ and dedicated it to our good friends Burnside Bridge.

DoubleJ then left the stage and Rob got back behind the skins. We went right into 1000X which we have not rehersed in months. Of course: no problems to speak of. Well there were only 3 bands and there were supposed to be 4, it wasnt too late, plus we were last so I fully intended to take advantage. It scary but after our ‘encore’, we played 12 more songs.

We started busting out songs left and right, including ‘Skulls’ which Cactus Matt grabbed the mic and 10 dudes were yelling the chorus, I just kicked back and jammed out. Another song I’ll play anywhere, anytime. At some point I figured we should play ‘Shelia’ by Shooting Blanks since 3/4 of the band was there (fuck you Dan!!!). We had only played it live once before, and hadnt played it since. I looked at Rob and said ‘can you handle it?’. He hesitated for a second and said ‘yeah’. We jammed it out perfectly and Matt ran on stage and sang the parts I didn’t know. We had some nice double vocal action in the break. Matt was dressed to the nines, he must have thought the Big Horse was formal dress only.

Someone called out ‘play some Guttermouth!’, probably cause Hilger was wearing the shirt. This song we played — ‘A Date with Destiny’ — may not have been the best choice and the crowd seemed a lil silent afterwards. Oh well. Better we play that, a technical Guttermouth song then somthing boring like ‘Just a Fuck’. At that point Rob was getting furious with me cause I kept saying ‘Ok, this is our last song….’, plus we were running out of ideas of what to play. Then someone came up with a bright idea — play more Pie in the Sky! doubleJ came right back up and we jammed thru 4 more songs, 3 of which we have not played in a very long time. After our 26th song of the night it was safe to stop.

The Big Horse closes early which sucks. I only had 1 Heiniken and they closed the bar. So I went up front to eat some Mexican cuisine and Rhyno started to criticize me because he said my ass crack showed during the set. That is the price you pay for me wearing those pants and jumping around a lil bit. He wouldn’t let up on me and all I can say is this: if you keep mouthing off Rhyno, I’ll bust your other arm you musclehead.

This was a very successful gig. We played a long set and the only flaw was me missing Burnside Bridge which I must apologize again for. I feel bad and wish there was another way. Were playing with them for their record release party soon and also with Shooting Blanks. IT will be at Lyons den which we have been trying to get into and Ive been wanting to play so this is going to be a very big fucking show and I cant wait. See ya then!!!

Show #61: Cal’s, Chicago

Low Profile live at Cal’s
Saturday November 8th
with the Powerknobs, the Paperbacks and Run Chico Run

This was an awesome show. I had a blast. Getting there was kinda weird. There r so many fucked up one way streets right around there that I couldn’t seem to get right in front of Cal’s on Wells street so I parked about 3 blocks away which was fine with me. That part of the city was dead. Many closed up bars and clubs and no one really out whatsoever. Cal’s is pretty crazy. It is very small and got very crowded quick which was great. We were doing shots out of paper Dixie cups which was weird but fine with me.

Right off the bat, thanks go out to the Powerknobs for booking us. When Bill offered the show, we gladly accepted right on the spot. Then I’ll thank Lisa and Jessica, my sister and Kelly, Scott, Dan (here with Rob) and Rocky.

We played first which was great for all of us. Our set was pretty awesome and people seemed to get into it. We played:

Hot Mom
What I Failed To Mention
All the Wrong Reasons
Low Pro pt 1
Folsom Prison Blues (originally by Johnny Cash)
Walk Dont Run
King of the Hill (theme)
JPF
Solitaire
Think About It
Execution Style

Sorority Shakedown/Wild Colonial Boy (psyche out intro)

I think thats everything. The set was sort of a blur as most are but it was fun. Williams hung up our set list on the wall along with many others that bands have hung up over the years.

Run Chico Run were up next. They just had two members and they just had a totally different sound from anything I’ve ever heard before. Both members were master musicians. I was talking with Joseph before the show and he was just an all around cool guy. Telling me about being on tour and playing up in Canada and getting harrassed at the border and other stuff. Their set was crazy for sure. They blew a fuse or something at some point and the power went out on all their equiptment but was soon fixed.

While they played, I made a break for it and went out to my car with a select few to smoke up. Then went back in for a few rounds of Jagr and more beer and I was feeling fabulous.

Next up was the Paperbacks. They were a 5 piece band with a wild chick singer. She is a great frontperson. Going wild, slamming into people, jumping up on the bar, etc. They played a real raucous set. The power went out while they played also. Too much shit plugged in or something.

The beloved Powerknobs played last. Their set was great. Very high energy and they got people dancing. Even Jon from Windy City Music was up front dancing along. My favorite song from their set of course was Cell Block Strut. They played Wild Colonial Boy also and rocked it to the fullest!!!!! They busted in to a lil ‘Javold’ at the end as well!!!

Much fun was had by all.

the night before the show i had some major insomnia. which was bad, since we were going to practice as usual at noon on saturday. usually we wouldnt practice the day of a show but we wanted to run thru JPF at least since it would be our first time playing it live.

i got up at noon on only about 4 1/2 hours of sleep and went to practice. we ran thru the set and i went back home to try and chill. i was planning to go back to bed but ended up staying up. my girfriend came over and we made some grub and then i passed out at about 730. all day (and the week prior) i was trying to decide if i should take the train or drive or have her drive or what. i finally decided to drive there myself and fight for parking or pay, it was too cold to take the train. so i went to bad around 630 and told her to wake me up at 730. i woke up on my own around 745 and she wasnt even there. she showed up right after that and we left. then she forgot her ID and we had to turn back a couple miles from home. im not trying to rip on my girl in todays review but this shit was trying my patience. (here she is with rob). luckily 290 had zero traffic and cals is right off the exit. i rolled up on a nice parking spot about 2-3 blocks away and we were actually pretty early. i called ross from the knobs and he said he was on the way. we chilled in the car for minute then grabbed my gear and started walking over. rob pulled up as we were doing so and he found some parking too. then i saw dr. z and gaynor cruise by looking for a spot. we walked up to the club and bill was there with ross loading in. we loaded in to and checked out the joint, looked pretty tight. the guys from run chico run were already there and they were super nice. we met mike the bartender and ordered some PBR’s. the paperbacks showed up right then too and then hilger finally showed. (here he is with his girlfriend lisa and one of the guys from run chico run)

we went on first and the club was suddenly packed. i still am not sure who all those people came to see (not us!). we rocked out a hell of a set and it felt really good. i had good stamina and the songs were solid. i used bills amp and it sounded pretty good, although if i would have been able to turn it up more it would have sounded way better, but that bitch is fucking loud so it wasnt really possible. even rob was borrowing ross’s drums and hilger was using andrews bass amp! fucking awesome! total knobs style!

well after that we lounged around. run chico run was next. at first my reaction was ‘what the fuck?!?!?!’ but these guys are musical geniuses. there are only 2 dudes in the band. they had a few different configurations and both of them can play all insturments. they started out with 1 dude on keys and the other on drums, but the drummer would sometimes play with one hand and be jammin bass riffs on a lil keyboard by the drums. eventually one of them started playing guitars instead of keys. i think that they switched something in every single song. after the 3rd song or so i was diggin it, real smooth jazz shit with sometimes high falsetto vocals. these guys are from british columbia, canada and are super nice. they must have a hell of a time hauling so much gear around….seemed like they have wires everywhere.

next up were the paperbacks. they have a chick singer and play some racous rock n roll type punk. they were pretty good but their frontperson had the complex where they have to destroy mics and shit. thats uncalled for. ripping the mic out of the cable, fucking up the mic stands, etc…. as a coincidence (i think) the PA head just died after it lost power a couple times. i dont know if it blew a fuse or what but mike busted out another head and got the show back underway. that band was just crazy.

some guy noticed my BOLD tattoo sometime along this point and we started talking about new york hardcore. i pulled my sweaty show shirt (gorilla biscuits) out of my bin and showed him and he was loving that. i also went outside and took some random pics as at this point i was getting a lil buzzed off some guiness and jameson and jager. there is a crazy club next door called the crocodile room that was bumpin music real loud and had velvet ropes and everything outside. it was the total opposite of cals. there was a huge guy standing outside cals who i guess was a bouncer of sorts and i saw a porsche parked right infront of us. i jokingly asked if it was his — he said that ‘that’ was his ride (a bike). the crocodile room looks pretty high class.

well the mighty knobs were up last. cell block strut was definately the highlight. that has definately become my fav song of theirs. they ended with uncivilized with dr. z on vocals which was great. after that for an encore they became jimmy dumpling and the bitburg boys and busted out their hit song ‘javold’ with andrew on the keys and a gang of people singing along with dr. z and bill knobs. someone started spraying a rolling rock and it got me right in the face.

well i jetted soon after that and me and my girlfriend were dying from food deprivation. we had both eaten only once much earlier in the day. we went to jewel and copped some cream cheese and chips and some fish sticks. i mixed some of that cream cheese with some harry and davids onion and pepper relish i had been saving and ate that up. we made some tartar sauce and ate the fish and it was real good. another awesome show…what else can i say?

Show #59: Big Horse, Chicago

Well Wicker Park sucks big time for parking so I had my dad drive me once again. I ran in and grabbed Joe from Squared Off and he helped me bring my gear in. No one else was really there at that point. I made my decision early that I would not drink before my set so I sat down and ordered a Coke at the bar. They gave me a nice pint glass full of ice so it was very refresing and good. Soon after Rob showed up and then Hilger. They loaded in thru the back in the alley. I was hanging out there and I also then met Eleanor’s Basement. They were rolling deep with about 5 other dudes besides the 5 in their band and they had tons of gear. Their drummers set consisted of over 2 full sets put together and they also brought their PA so they had like 7 cars full of stuff. Charleston Dueling Society showed up then and I introduced myself and told them how I had seen them play at Big Wig before. They were very nice and said they had ‘heard good things about Low Profile’ from the guys in Break of Day who later showed up also. Betty Burbank (here with Joe) showed up as well as Rhyno from Squared Off (check his ability to flick me off even with a fucked up arm in a sling). Get well soon Rhyno!

It soon started to get pretty crowded which was surprising to me. Looking back, I can’t really remember when the guys from Little Sisters of Philly got there. I know they had to work late or something. Charleston Dueling Society was up first and they rocked the house. They all have super nice gear and good songs. They didn’t play too long which was nice. Near the end of their set some of the guys from Boom Jack showed up. There were twins in the band and they approached me and Weber about loading in. At this point there seemed to be gear stacked up to the ceiling everywhere you looked. I told them that they had better just wait it out. 5 bands at a small club like the Big Horse is WAY too much! I know that everyone is concerned with the ‘bottom line’ and packing the club but you succeed more in packing the club with gear then anything. Its a terrible inconvienence. CDS was trying to get off stage after their set and I was helping them. We were just setting the drums in the tiny hallway next to the stage. At the same time we’re trying to set up as fast as possible. So within 5 minutes were almost ready and Weber comes up to me and says ‘I need you guys to pick up the pace’ or some other ignorant comment. As if I was fucking around and bullshitting up there. First of all, I am very anxious before I play so I am not in the mood to talk to anyone or so anything but get my shit ready so we can start. I had my wireless ready to go and I was just tuning up and he says how Armando (the owner/manager/bartender) says we have to hurry up. I went off on Weber at this point and said I don’t give a fuck what he or anyone else wants, were doing our best and get the fuck out of my face. Actually what I said involved the word ‘fuck’ alot more times but that doesn’t matter. The funny thing is how after I go off Weber gets his typical sarcasm going on like ‘What did I do?’. I was ready to kill him at that point but luckily now Rob was ready and we got our set on.

I was dead sober so I had a ton of energy and stamina and didn’t get tired or anything at all. We were blasting thru our songs and it felt great. Rhyno had kidnapped Rub-a-dub Doggie. Everyone was up front diggin it. Opening with ‘Figure it Out’ can never go wrong as far as I see it. ‘Hot Mom’ 2nd worked real well as well. The set seemed short, I guess because we didn’t talk hardly between the songs and we just tore thru em. We played a Jawbreaker song near the end of the set and I introduced it by simply saying ‘This is a Jawbreaker song’. I knew I didn’t have to introduce it anymore then that since no one probably knew who the band was anyways. I turned up the knob on my guitar and looked to Rob to rip the fill to start the song and in that moment of half silence and the buzzing of my amp, I heard someone say ‘Jawbreaker?’ I looked up and the song was on. My voice was perfectly warmed up at that point and I just ripped it. I love to sing that song. People always bitch about the Big Horse PA but I don’t give a fuck. People were also complaining that the PA wasn’t powerful enough but goddamnit I think I showed those people what was up. I know I could hear myself really well. I also turned my amp up past half way that night which is SUPER loud by the standards of every other show I’ve played with that amp. After the set, I changed my shirt.

After our set the guy that said ‘Jawbreaker?’ came up to me, he was the singer of Boom Jack and gave me mad props. He was super nice and I bought him a beer and gave him some stickers. He said how he loved Jawbreaker and they were going to play ‘Boxcar’ which was awesome. Another drunken weird guy who was brown baggin in the alley came up to me and said how he had actually seen us play at the Divine Cup in Rockford a year ago which was crazy. I didn’t remember him but he said how we hooked him up with a ton of free shit like cds and a t-shirt. That guy ended up getting violently drunk later in the set. But first was the 3rd band, Eleanor’s Basement. They just had too much gear and too many members. I love playing in a 3-piece becasue we are very well suited for small clubs. When these huge bands with 2 guitars and all this shit come up in a club like the Big Horse it just sounds like mud. Leave the half stacks at home! They are too loud! They described themselves as ‘blues rock’ before the show and they were pretty much right on. They ended up covering a Rolling Stones and a Ramones song. I was never able to figure out how or why so many people were at the show that night, and me and Hilger were trying to figure out who made the huge draw. It may have been this band. They closed with ‘I Want to be Sedated’ and a bunch of weird drunk chicks started dancing and even I got into the mix regardless of the fact that I hate the Ramones. Its just a fun song.

Next up was, in my estimation, the best band of the night: Little Sisters of Philly. These guys were reppin the south side so hard that I couldn’t even believe it. They were dead serious and they had properly sized amps! I couldn’t believe it! They had 2 guitars and it didn’t sound like mud! AND ALL OF THEM HAD CRATE AMPS!!! How awesome is that! After like the 2nd song I was thinking ‘this band is pretty cool’. They had a nice rock/roots sound with good mid tempo beats. After a few more songs the beer must have been hitting me cause now I was super digging this band. They jammed out an awesome song they dedicated to 80th and California, and sang about how sad they were that that neighboorhood now is a ghetto. The song was composed of basically just quiet guitars, a few quiet drum accents and vocals. It moved me. By the time they got to the last song they were getting super powerful. Their bassist had an awesome vintage Rickenbacker that looked like it had been around the block. Their last song was called ‘Kings of the One Eleven’, refering to 111th street. I have no doubt that they guys are the Kings of the 111. The end of the song just jammed out with a blazing lead and it was truly emotional. Great job guys, you kicked my ass!

The last band was Boom Jack. Once again — 2 guitars with massive half stacks, it was LOUD. And thats not always a good thing. It was so loud that I went out back and was getting high with Hilger when Lisa came back and said people were beating each other up and getting ruthless in the pit. Well I have been in a few mosh pits myself and had no fear of these people. I busted in and saw our drunk buddy from Rockford who was now wasted as fuck with a swollen eye and some other drunken ass dude who had a busted eye also blood dripping onto his shirt. I walked right into the middle of that pit and started hitting dudes and grabbin em. Boom Jack ended up closing with ‘Boxcar’. They kept asking Armando for 1 more song and he kept saying no, so I just told the singer ,’dude, just start the fucking song!’. So they did and it was good. I grabbed him and sang a few lyrics myself.

Everyone left and I was still around. Oh yeah, the drunken dude #2 who was hittin folks in the mosh pit was now pukin like a lil bitch out back, getting soaked in the rain. In my own drunkeness, I went out and snapped a few pics of his broke ass. Heres a pic of him shortly before passing out, fighting/moshing with another drunken fool.

Everyone left and I convinced my girlfriend to spot me some cash for a burrito since I had spent all my loot at the bar. I ate that and went home and took a shower and kind of felt like shit as I came down from my drunkeness.

Great fucking show, can’t wait for Nov 14th to play again with Burnside Bridge and the Burbanks! Thanks to Weber for the show, looks like the 1st ‘Distortion Tacos’ was a success!! Right now its Sunday and I went back to the Big Horse and the Note the next night on Saturday. Too bad I’m not in Ratbag Hero or I could write another wicked review, as it was another awesome night.

Special thanx to the crew in this pic — its on my desktop right now.

Low Profile live at Big Horse Lounge in Chicago
Friday Oct 24th
w/ Charleston Dueling, Eleanors Basement, Little Sisters of Philly and Boomjack

What a fucking night. When I found out there were gonna be 5 bands total, I knew it would be a long night.
I got to Big Horse around 9 and everyone was there already. Weber was pretty much running the PA and all. Scott was there all night too. Thanks for everything guys.
So I started drinking right away and mingled a bit till Charleston Dueling were ready to start. They stalled out a bit and started late. They r a 3piece punk band. Pretty tight and just a fun band. Their drummer jammed fo sho!!! They rocked.
Satan picked up their CD. I’m interested in hearing it and maybe we can set something up with them in the future.
We were up to play second. We had a real good set I thought and afterwards, many people commented and thought the same. Our set was something like this:

Figure It Out
Hot Mom
The Limitation
Walter Mander
48 (thrown into the set at the last minute for Weber)
Execution Style
Lachrymose
Boat Dream From the Hill (originally by Jawbreaker)
Milwaukee (originally by Mongoloids in Crayon Suits)

I think that was it. It seems like I may be forgetting something but I’m not sure. It went by pretty quick. I had a lot of energy the whole show and wasn’t tired at all.
The crowd seemed to like us and seemed like they were having fun. Betty, Joe and Rhyno were right up front. Joe sang along to most of our songs. Thanks dude.
Thanks to Lisa for taking pics. The ones I’ve seen so far look great. We took our shit off stage and let the next band set up. I just had to sit down to calm myself after that set. It felt great.
Eleanors Basement were up next. They were 5 piece with a keyboardist. They played bluesy type music. The drummer played a huge ass drumset with many pieces that covered him up. He ripped a drum solo during one of the songs. They were good but I was so hyper that they sort of chilled me out a lil too much. I went out to smoke a bowl in my car with a select few and went back in feeling much better and got to see them play I Wanna Be Sedated. Williams bought me and Weber a round of shots and we started partying harder.
Little Sisters were next and they were awesome. Representing the southside and 111th to the fullest. We have much luv for these guys.
They were 4 piece. Both guitarists and the bassist played out of small Crate amps. So we were down with that and told them when they were loading out. They were awesome. The singer was great and they were just all around fun. I’d luv to play with these guys again sometime.
After they played, Williams and I were out back getting soaked in the rain and splashing around in puddles. There was a club with a lot of noise coming from it not far away so we tried to get closer to see what was going on. Some band was playing 80s rock covers and there seemed to be a lot of people singing along. So we creeped around and checked it out and just hung out in the back alley. He smashed his beer bottle against a wall and we cheered like lil fucking kids. It seemed so fun.
The last band was Boomjack. They took a while setting up and we were forced to listen to bad rock bass ‘licks’ that the bassist played while waiting for the rest of the band. This band was crazy. They were loud as fuck and had a crazy PA system they set up for themselves.
Their crew in the crowd were getting rowdy as fuck.
Bloodied drunk dude who puked included.
They covered Boxcar by Jawbreaker as their last song. We chatted up with the singer before the show and he told me that 24 Hour Revenge Therapy was one of his favorite albums. I agreed with him. So since we played Jawbreaker, they played Jawbreaker. Fucking A guys. U rocked that song out fo sho!!!
And they had twins in the band. How ya luvin that? They both played guitar. It was a very crazy night. Some is blurred but I had a lot of fun.
It was so fucking loud in there. My ears r still ringin. So many huge ass amps that seem to big for that place.
So I’m goin to see Ratbag and the Symptoms at the Note tonight and then I’ll run across to Big Horse to see Burnside Bridge. Can’t wait. It’ll be another fun night.
So thanks to everyone that was there. Hope u all had fun and enjoyed all the bands and the booze. Cya round.

Show #58: Fantasy Lounge, Chicago

Low Profile live at Fantasy Lounge
Friday September 26th
with Shooting Blanks and Burnside Bridge

Great fucking show all around. I had a blast.

It is 2:35am. I just got out of the shower but am feeling very fucking wasted. I drank many beers tonight and just got done smoking a bowl. Right on! I’ve got on the Lucy show cuz there isn’t much else on at this hour and I don’t have cable.

So we got this show from Matt from Shooting Blanks who got the show from Burnside Bridge. We ended up playing with Burnside at Memories a few weeks earlier and looked forward to playing with them again. Deech is still out of commission so I figured, me and Williams would split the Shooting Blanks set since we both have been doing fill in shows for them and it’d be fun. He agreed and we both chose the songs we’d jam with them.

For the Low Profile set, we busted out some songs we haven’t played live or practiced really in some time now. Think About It being one and Execution Style as the other. It jams though. I brought it up at practice and we jammed it after not playing it for a long time and thru it in the set.

So I showed up to the venue at about 8:15. Williams, Josh and Corey were all there. They were setting up the PA and shit. I noticed Dan’s car outside but he wasn’t in there when I walked in. I loaded my gear in and chilled a while. Dan and Matt walked in a while later. We all sat around and started drinking. Well, I started drinking. Everyone else seemed to get a lil head start on me.

Jonny from the Burbanks showed up. Hoser and Joe from Squared Off showed up. Weber and Scott from Ratbag. Bill, Ross and Andrew from the Powerknobs. It was like a big band fest. There was no turn out whatsoever really. We ended up playing for all band members that we r crew with and that made the show really special in a way. Some people would rip on it all and say it sucked but it was truly awesome. Thanks everyone who was there. It was intense fun for me!!!!!!

So 10:00 rolls around and Shooting Blanks r due up first with Williams starting the set with them. They race thru:

Another Chance
Wasted Time
Ignore Me
Simple Song
She Luvs Me Cuz I Rock

I sang along and took some pics of Satan165 playing with them. Then I took over on the bass and we played:

Knee Deep
Louder
Payback
Mindfuck
Sheila
Home Sweet Home (originally by Motley Crue)

Sheila was added. Since we had planned on covering Sheila as a surprise to Matt, Dan and Brey, I told Williams to avoid playing that song with them but I fell thru. After Mindfuck(which was dedicated to Josh), Matt was determined to play one more song and THEN Home Sweet Home so I asked what he had in mind and he said Sheila. I said “how bout Silly Goose???” and he said nope so we jammed Sheila. It rocked for sure. But u ruined our surprise damnit!!!! Nah. It’s all good. Everyone got to see that song twice. Hope u enjoyed it.
Brey got naked for a bit and it was a lil too much for me and was turning on everyone in the crowd so he had to cover up a lil.
Luv ya Brey!
No No! Too sexy!!! (if u watch SNL u may know what I’m talking about.)

Much thanks to Shooting Blanks for letting us come aboard for these past few shows. Much luv and respect to u guys. I can’t wait to see u guys with Deech back in the lineup. U know I’ll be there!!!!!!
It’s been a blast getting drunk and rowdy rocking on stage with y’all!

Burnside Bridge were up next. Corey was tuning up one guitar and a few people were yelling for him to play his Rickenbacker so he switched to please us all and tuned that one up to play instead. They rocked a real good set. We heckled with them over playing some Slayer and it was just a good time. Their songs rock! They all sing! They r just a cool band all around.
Again, much luv and respect to these guys. Thanks for providing PA and amps and making the show run smoothly.

Low Profile was up last. We played a real long set. We scrapped part of our set list and added a ton of other songs. I’m not even sure I’ll remember everything we played. But it was something like this:

Think About It
Execution Style
Chesterfield King (originally by Jawbreaker) for Ross!!!
En Guarde
What I Failed To Mention
All The Wrong Reasons
Sheila (originally by Shooting Blanks) for Matt, Dan and Brey!!! (w/ Weber and Matt on backups!!!)
(Misfits medley) featuring many back up singers!
I Turned Into a Martian
Vampira
Hybrid Moments
Astro Zombies
Return of the Fly
King of the Hill theme
Folsom Prison Blues (originally by Johnny Cash)
Green Corn (originally by NOFX) with Joe on vocals
Figure It Out (also with Joe on vocals)
Last Caress (Misfits)
Summertime (originally by Crimpshrine)
My Turn (originally by Squared Off) Hoser on vocals, Joe doing backups.

I think that was it. I may have missed something but oh well. It was a lot of fun.
Ross requested Hot Mom and a Jawbreaker cover so we did Chesterfield for him since he told me he listened to Bivouac on the way over to the show. Josh requested I Turned into a Martian by the Misfits so we played that and told everyone to just call out songs. Josh called out Skulls and Attitude a few times but we never did those. I also heard Spook City USA called out which is a pretty obscure but still good Fits song but we don’t know it. Sorry. Jessica called out She but that is an arm bender for Rob. Astrozombies was called out and we went into that. And then Return of the Fly so we went right into that as well. Glad to see so many Misfits fans out there. Burnside Bridge were using my mic for back ups. Props all the way!!!!!

I think we may have gotten My Turn right that time. Rob not included cuz the drums r all good to it. F#ii and then the G – A part. Got it!

It was a very fun set. I played most of it in my boxer briefs. Scott was a lil scared I may play fully naked but I didn’t. Weber did pull my undies down a lil but not to far to reveal my private parts.
Sorry ladies.

We chilled a while after we were thru and took our time loading out. I was exhausted and out of it. I’m gonna finish this bowl off and call it a night. Thanks everyone for coming out. Hope everyone had fun and got home ok. We’re not playing for a while. Check the site for upcoming shows and any other updates. Cya round.

Show #57: Big Wig, Chicago

Low Profile live at BigWig
Sunday September 7th
with the Burbanks, BORD and the Hacks

Our 3rd time playing Bigwig. And what a show it was.
We practiced at 6 and ran thru the set real quick.
Then sat around Rob’s watching VH1 about Snoop Dogg and Eminem. Eventually we left for the show.

Got to BigWig. Loaded in and all that. Sat around, chilled. Started off drinking with a Red Bull/vodka. Dave the bartender said that Monday was his birthday so we toasted to that. Charles and Scott were running the place. Charles doing sound and Scott running the door. Weber didn’t show up but Williams called him up and fucked with him for not showing. Thanks Weber.

BORD from Wisconsin set up and soon started their set. There was a good amount of people there. These guys r real cool. I got to see them play on Saturday night at Rubes also so twice was a real treat. And they covered the Beatles. They rock, they got the harmonizing vocals going and they r just a fun band to watch and hang out with.

The Hacks from Denver, CO played next. They covered a Crimpshrine song but I was at the bar drinking and chatting away for most of their set and then ran out to my car for a quick session with Lisa and Julie. YAY!!! Julie showed up. We met Julie the night before at Rubes and invited her to the show.

The Burbanks played 3rd. This was probably their best set I’ve seen yet. I was feelin it. They used our amps for the show so we set em up for em. They rocked out for sure.

We played last. I didn’t really mind all too much. My only problem is that band members get 3 free drinks a piece but if we’re playin last, then I think we should get like 5 free drinks a piece!!!!!!

Williams and I both rocked the cordless systems with no problems. Our set was something like this:

Carl Panzram
Zamboni
Grudge
Figure It Out
Summertime (Crimpshrine)
30 Years (Pie in the Sky) featuring Jamey Johnson on drums
48
King of the Hill theme
Green Corn (NOFX)

Misfits medley:
Last Caress beginning
Return of the Fly
Last Caress ending
Bullet
Dig Up Her Bones featuring Betty Burbank and Jonny Jobless on vocals

The set was great. We rocked thru all the songs. For ’30 Years’ Rob came out from behind the drums and got to rock out true frontman style. It was awesome to have the added energy at the front lines. Jamey played the song lightening fast and that added to the energy of the song but I was luvin it.
Weber luved 48 when we played it at Memories so we thru it into the set just for him and since he didn’t show, I dedicated the song to Scott.
Williams and I went for a lil walk to the front of the club and then he started King of the Hill. Scott and Dave were laughing at us. Hey, we gotta entertain them too since they can’t really go to the back of the club and watch the bands cuz they gotta work the front.
Joe from Squared Off requested Green Corn so we played that.
Dig Up Her Bones was added last minute. I’m not sure how that came about. I just heard it being mentioned and knew we had to play it. There was a rustle amongs the crowd when it was brought up. Williams invited Betty and Jonny up to help sing and they quickly obliged. It sounded great. There were more back up vocals coming from the crowd and the whole place was rockin.
I doubt anyone really knew Return of the Fly. I know Jonny did cuz he was singin it right next to me. Thats a pretty obscure Misfits song.
We chilled a while after the set and did a round of shots and had another drink. Then I said my goodbyes and went home. I hugged many people that night. There was a lot of luv goin around.
Thanks to Lisa. Charles and Scott of Ratbag. Hoser and Joe of Squared Off. A:/run, Frank and Will of Rocky Denis. Jamey. Julie. The Burbanks, BORD and the Hacks. Dave – Happy Birthday!!!!

The night before this show, I played a gig at Rube’s with Shooting Blanks. I slept about 10 hours and felt very rested. Weber called me at around noon when I was sleeping. Normally I don’t even bring my cell phone in my bedroom when I sleep, I don’t want to be woken up, but for some reason I answered it. He asked me for the 100th time if the Burbanks were confirmed to play that night. I screamed ‘yes!’ and told him not to call so early. I asked when he got up and he said at 630 am. He was hammered at about 2 am and wanted to go to a bar the night before. That’s insane. I went back to sleep and woke up around 3 pm. I assembled my gear and loaded up my car, then I drove to JJ Peppers to make copies of flyers and then ran across the street for a burrito from Cesar’s. It was about 5:30 onw and we were supposed to meet up at Rob’s at 6 pm to reherse the set before the gig. I parked my car in front of his house and went into the River Front Park and sat down at ate my burrito and drank a lemon lime gatorade. Some trasher looking family was drinking Busch cans and playing with their dog. The dog came up right by me and the kid followed, he was trying to get the dog to go away from me but I didn’t feel he was trying hard enough, and I was perturbed that I was having my space invaded in such a huge area. I turned to the kid and said, ‘hey, get your dog out of here’. The dad piped up then and hollered for his kid to get that dog away. I finished eating and my hands were covered with grease and shit. I wiped em in the grass and walked to Rob’s. It was still too early, so I just walked the 1 block home to wash up. I went back to Rob’s and we jammed thru most of the set. I started sweating my fucking balls off for some reason then. We loaded up and I left, Hilger and Lisa and Rob were chillin.

I got to the Bigwig at about 7:40. I was hoping the Burbanks could play first and us second since they were going to use our amps. Well, BORD was already set up. Chuck (on the left) told me that they had to leave early or some shit. I was immediatley perturbed at this for a number of reasons:

1) they only live in Madison, which is probably about 3 hours.
2) they are ‘on tour’, so excuses about sleeping and work the next day — I’m not interested.
3) I try to welcome touring bands to Chicago, but I guess these guys felt like they didn’t owe us shit. 4) I HATE when bands leave early and don’t watch us play. I dont care if you sit at the bar or outside, but you better hang out until the last set is done and say ‘good set man’. its good sportsmanship like they taught you in litle league.

The guys in BORD are real cool for the most part — except for their 2nd guitarist, who for both the Rube’s and Bigwig shows watched not a minute of any of the other bands, he quickly entered and exited before and after his bands sets. They played and I heckled them about eating sausage and cheese and shit.

The Hacks from Denver were next. I really grew to like these guys more and more, musically and personally, over the 2 days I hung out and jammed with them. They introduced one song by saying ‘this is a cover…this band is from berkley….its crimpshrine’. I ran over to Hilger I was so excited — we immediately agreed we would have to bust out a Crimpshrine cover of our own. The Burbanks followed and were awesome as usual. They aren’t ‘like family’ — they ARE family. Its great to play in an awesome venue with cool bands, and bands that you know and have played with before.

So we finally went on last. Jamey came out and brought a gang of people with him: A:/run, frank, and will from rocky denis; colleen suba, and other of their friends including one dude from the band Johnny Rev. Their support is truly fucking awesome. Joe and Hoser from Squared Off also came out which was great.

Hilger came up with the idea of Jamey sitting in for a song with us, and playing a Pie in the Sky song. We tossed around a few possibilities and decided on the classic, ’30 Years’. We had not played it in months, and we had not played with Jamey in even longer. He sat down and it was fucking amazing. You could probably wake up the 4 of us from a deep sleep and throw us at our insturments and we would play 99% flawlessly. It was an honor to share the stage with an ex-PITS.

After the show I started getting pretty smashed on all the vodka I had drank. Me and Hilger helped clean up the place by trashing empty bottles and bringing glasses back to the bar. I helped Chuck clean up the sound gear and left around 2 am when they kicked us all out. It was a truly wicked weekend of 2 great shows, surrounded by the best bands in Chicago and a great crew of people that love music as much as I do. I laid in bed that night just going over everything again and again…the sets were just a blur to me, but all the partying and drinking and just having fun with other bands stuck out and made me smile even then in the dark under my covers. Thanks to all involved.
