Show #87: Memories, Chicago

Low Profile live at Memories
Friday September 15th
with Johnny Vomit, All or Nothing HC, Seven Year Existence, Redneck Exorcist, Moral Decay and Clad in Darkness
what a show. 7 fucking bands made for a fun, long and interesting night.

Satan and i met up at Rob’s right around 6. we loaded up the van and waited for Rob and Metko, our roadie for the weekend. we left soon after. i parked in my usual spot. loading equipment 2 blocks sucks major dick but oh well. that’s what we brought Metko for and he was truly great. we immediately set our shit up since we were playing first. then we started drinking!!!!! bands started showing up. the Rose Red people were there. we helped move shit out of the way and set up the PA, etc. they were real cool. except for the list of rules posted up near the PA.

so we played first. our set was:

Overlength
Tolerance
Arnold Palmer and Katie Holmes
Will to Kill
Past Tense
En Guarde
Nature
Grudge
Figure It Out
Hotboxed

it was a good tight set all around. it all went by in a blur. sorry i don’t have any fun stories about anything that happened. the night was still early. we loaded our shit out right away and just made a bunch of rounds all night to check on our gear or smoke up.

Seven Year Existence were next. they were fucking awesome. they’re from Champaign, IL. they played fast, furious heavy metal. they played real nice ESP guitars and basses. the singer was awesome. i just liked these guys a lot. here’s Satan with Luke. these guys broke a rule and were fined. hahahahaha. that’s pretty fucked up.

next up was Clad in Darkness. these guys were alright.

next up was All or Nothing HC from California. they were definately awesome and very energetic. crazy female vocals and a hot chick guitarist. the bassist wore a Judge shirt so u know me and Satan were luvin that. we kept yelling Judge at him all night whenever we saw him. he probably thought we were nuts. anyways, this band was awesome. i traded CDs with Renae. i listened to it pretty much all day Saturday in the van. good stuff for sure. check em out.

Moral Decay were up next. once again, they were just alright.

Redneck Exorcist were up next. they were pretty awesome. i was definately entertained. they play 3 piece like us so we brought that up to em when we met em. here’s Satan and Jimbo. the drummer sang and was a lot of fun. said a bunch of crazy shit in between songs and cracked us all up. the guitarist played real wild. reminded me of some Greg Ginn shit. i liked em a lot. and they broke the Rose Red rules. the guitarist must have knocked the mic stand over about 10 times. they must have gotten fined too. hahahahaha.

we had to wait a while for Johnny Vomit to start cuz Scott worked a long ass day and was at home passed out. they called him and he rushed over, literally ran in the joint with his bass in hand, plugged in, tuned and started their set. it sucked waiting for him but everyone cheered when he ran in. it was pretty awesome. they only got to play a short set but it rocked anyway. they ended with Emergency by GirlSchool and Jimbo from Redneck Exorcist ran up to sing along. awesome fucking song. Roman rules!. so does bill and his huge beard!

at some point in the night, i was sittin on the pool table in between bands and Johnny Vomit motions to me. i get closer and i’m like what’s up?? he hands me a handful of bud. i didn’t know why or what to do but it was pretty hysterical. i just pocketed it all. then later dumped it all into Satan’s hand. we were laughing about it and he couldn’t believe it. then of course we packed it up. thanks man. he’s actually done that once before to me at the DRI show in Aurora where we actually smoked a joint right in front of the stage while DRI was playing. it was awesome. ahhhh, memories. the ‘good buddy bar’.

Show #78: Fantasy Lounge, Chicago

Low Profile live at Fantasy Lounge
Friday October 7th
with After the Fight, First Round Failure and Damnitall

once again i took the day off from work so i could sleep in and chill all day before the show. i went to breakfast at Four Seasons which is always a treat and later on got a sub from Al and Joes. i watched an episode of Oz. i’m on season 4 and theres a lot of good shit goin on. it was hard to just watch one episode but i had to start getting ready, warm up and whatnot.

we met up at Rob’s at 7:45. Satan rode with me in the van. listened to some Slayer on the way there to get us pumped up. got to Fantasy Lounge and it was the same as always. the owner and the same bartender working. she remembered us right away. what a lady!! i was serenading her with ‘she’s a lady’ by Tom Jones and she was cracking up at me.

Weber, Koz and Deech all showed up. we haven’t seen Weber in forever so it was good to see him. he took this pic of us with me and Satan holding pool balls but was trying to be professional and pose us a certain way. pretty fuckin funny. good ole Weber.

so Damnitall started their set around 10 or so. they played some good metal type punk. played a lot of good leads. and they covered Iron Maiden. can’t go wrong with that. the guitarist sported the Powerslave shirt and even had an Eddie tat. i should

have gotten a pic of it. here he is with Satan chillin at the bar. we played second. such a great slot for us. i used Steve’s amp and Satan used Cory’s. our set was:

Figure It Out
the Limitation
Walter Mander
the Will to Kill
Arnold Palmer
Carl Panzram
Where Was I? (originally by Guttermouth)
Solitaire
Ultraviolence
Hotboxed
Hybrid Moments (originally by the Misfits)

it was a good, fun, solid set. the Ernie Ball Sub looks awesome and she plays real clean. felt good to hold her. this was the first show i busted her out for.
Rub a Dub had some fun tonite too. he got to go chill over by Weber and hold his drink. slave drivin my mascot huh??
Koz came up and sang Hybrid Moments. it was a big sloppy mess but still fun. Betty walked in and missed us once again. hahahaha. all good. and it was a real treat to see Todd Winfro. i got this pic of him with Satan. and thanks to Deech for taking pics of us once again. u know we’ll have u do it at the Nitecaps show too so be ready.

After the Fight were up next. always a good set from these guys. thanks to Josh for inviting us out to play here again.

First Round Failure was up last. Shaun was definately rockin on the bass. i’ve never seen him play but he rips. they were a lot of fun and i was impressed. Nick entertained us with Mathis stories after their set.

so we hung out till they started kicking us out and then took our time loading our shit out. it was so nice not having to bring amps. i can bring my shit all in one trip then. Satan and i stood around and bullshitted with Deech for about twenty minutes and i got this pic of Satan coming across the street with all his shit. and this pic of Deech while he was walkin up on us. then Satan and i hit up Sussies and got some food. i just had a cheese dog and we shared a large cheese fries. it was such a big fuckin mess of cheese, but we luved it. check me out. i’ll let Satan tell ya about his crazy huge sandwich. that place definately rules.

satan165 tells you about ‘his crazy big sandwich’ — more then half the fun of playing at fantasy lounge is eating at susy’s afterwards. fat men like myself need what susy’s likes to call ‘one foot of good eating!’. oh, and how it is! good eating that is. of course i am refering to the ‘confused chicken’. costing around $7 and weighing in at around 3 pounds, this humungous sub roll is filled with onions, peppers, mushrooms and a shitload of shredded chicken. when you bite into it, the juices flow out like you shanked someone. if you are around montrose and pulaski, or pounding heinikens at the fantasy lounge during a gig, there is only one way to cap off the night. and thats with a confused chicken. get one today!

and oh yeah. hilger got a new camera. its pretty dope and i was showing hilger how to use the timer function so i took this pic. its so good i saved it and put it up here for your enjoyment. that is all. back to hilger.

well, it was a great day all around. i had a blast at the show. thanks to everyone who made it a good show. till the next one. same band website. same fool writin up a review.

Show #69: Fantasy Lounge, Chicago

got this show from josh of after the fight. which is interesting cause when we played there the 1st time a year before almost, we got it from josh who was then in burnside bridge. the owner les sometimes is a dick and will bitch that you didnt bring enough people, yet hell call you back then asking if you want to play again. this time around i guess he called josh, asked if he wanted to play and even offered him money right off the bat! well we got on the bill and i was excited from the get-go.

i chilled out before hand and had some red bull vodka (way to ‘chill out’!) and sat with johnny as he ate a pizza and offered some to anyone that walked by. of course johnny and cory had to wear their burnside bridge shirts, which i also wore. we looked like a bunch of dorks probably.

the burbanks were supposed to play but i guess johnny never told mark about the show, and mark had to be out of town. so at the last minute the burbanks were faced with the possibility of canceling the show. but johnny just switched to guitar and played what songs they could. i even came up and sang ‘where did you go’ for em. im glad they were able to find a way to be able to still do the gig.

the 1st act was this dude named drew neely. he used to be in a band called thrift store heros. i guess this guy has also done production work for other bands, including split habit who i like alot. he played just by himself with acoustic guitar. he also left i believe before we went on at the end of the night. i wasnt feelin his set but he knew what he was doing well enough.

well after the fight went on right before us, the third of 4 acts. they are always a pleasure personally and i was eager to check out their new sound. they definatley have a bit more ‘edge’ then burnside bridge and i like em better, tho i was a fan of burnsides sound as well. they played as a well oiled machine thats been gigging for years although they have only recently assembled the band. im sure they will try to depreciate themselves but they sounded great. they played one awesome song i can find no info about on their site called ‘i dont know’ (i guess thats what its called), it was pretty heavy and i dug it alot. well i started getting pretty anxious, more anxious then usual i think. i really wanted to just get up there and get our set underway so i could release the tension inside of me that was building to a point of being way out of fucking hand. lately ive gotten my anxiety under control but it was bad this night. it seemed like they were playing an epic set of 100 10 minute songs tho they were probably only up there for like 20 minutes. they eventually played a ramones song and some dude they knew came up and sang it which was cool.

allow me to sidetrack….at some point early on in their set i saw rob sitting alone at the bar. they have a nice set up like they used to have at smiler coogans (RIP) where they have a camera on the stage and you can watch it on the tv in the other room.i sat down next to him and we talked for a second and another dude came up and sat down. although there were other seats, he chose to squeeze in on the last stool on the bar, which i felt invaded our space a lil bit. but hey, its a free country. there was a lull in me and robs conversation and this guy just blurts out ‘yeah…i played here 17 years ago’ or some such nonsense. i looked at rob to see if maybe i missed something and he knew this guy. the guy went on then about this and that and his illustrious musical career. he was just dropping club names and rambling on…during a lull i quietly whispered to rob ‘do you know this guy?’ and rob said no, which surprised me. ive met a few people like this before but this time i was certain there was some justification for this outburst of ego stroking. i grabbed a cd and gave it to him which brought no questions or comments about our own music, only more bullshit about his own. after i gave him the cd i had to take a pic of this asswipe.. he was like ‘did you just take a pic of me?’. i answered a very serious ‘no’. hahahahah you dummy. after a few minutes of his bullshit i just walked away.

well after the fight was winding down their set and someone kept yelling the VERY old and cliched joke ‘play free bird!’. cory or someone started fucking with the chords and starting to play it and this guy that was at the bar with me and rob must have nearly split his drawers with a massive throbbing boner. being that he is a washed up dirtbag, he jumped at the chance to be able to pull this impromptu jam. josh gave him his guitar and started playing free bird. they all started playing it and he was singing it. now i dont fault ATF for not knowing the song as they dont play recycled classic rock. but this asshole who jumped up didnt even know.

heres a little lesson of freebird. i learned to play this a VERY long time ago. this asshole was confused with the verse

verse:
G / F# / Em
F / C / D

when he got to the C i watched him fumble around even tho he had no clue what the chord was.

then the chorus he also was confused about, which makes sense since the chorus is the 2nd half of the verse (F / C / D). and to complete the lesson (tho its of little relevance to the story) the final ending change that plays for 8 minutes during the mindless soloing is G / A# / C. he played a few of the riffs decently from teh solo ad infinitum and my anxiety was turning to anger. ill listen to after the fight play as long as they want because they are a good band, they play punk rock, i like them and they booked the show. but listening to this guy was turning my mind into mush. finally they ended the song but this jerk off wasnt done! he made some lame announcement that ‘im just a chicago firefighter’ which, like his announcement to me and rob that he had played the venue 2 decades ago was IRRELEVANT. they went into a led zepplin song (i believe) and more mindless soloing. then he left the stage with little grace, waving to the crowd like he was a superstar. in his own weak defense, many of the people were actually entertained with his feeble attempts which butchered these classic songs. he even went and was shaking hands with people! i guess it was a ‘meet and greet’. that guy sucks big time, go start your own goddamned band. because when and if you do, ILL NEVER PLAY A SHOW WITH YOU. and its that freedom which i love that keeps me from having to deal with you.

well anyways we finally got on stage. the PA and monitors sounded great and my voice held up better then it had for many of our recent shows. we played a couple face to face songs which would normally strain me but i felt real strong. our engineer scott came out which was awesome, i was very excited to play the new songs he recorded for him live. i sweat at a consistent pace and never really felt exhausted up there. we had one near trainwreck during ‘use your mind’ by guttermouth but somehow pulled out of it. you can blame rob for that one! good gig altogether. at the end of the set rob recommended that we play ‘studio nightmare’, our new instrumental. i was nervous we might fuck it up, and i was nervous it might be boring. but it really moved me once we started playing it and it was alot of fun. rob said he gets alot of comments on that song — all the people i know only give me comments on the damn voice mails! he must have some more attentive fans.

also thanx to the voice mail master dave mazur for coming out to the show. also to metko and bones. metko was super excited to get the new cd, i hope he enjoyed it.

after the show i went next door to the 24 hour place whos name always eludes me. sallys? i dont know.heres a pic, night mode and long exposure time dont work too well when youre exhausted after a show and a bit drunk well i walked up and was about to order and a dude, his girlfriend and another dude came up beind me to get in line. after we both ordered and were waiting for our food, i heard the three of them start discussing the movie ‘true romance’ which is definitely a great movie. the one dude was explaining the difference between the rated R and NC-17 versions. i jumped into the conversation and we started discussing cinema. we were giving props to true romance and to quentin tarintino also, i started giving props to tony scott who directed it. it was awesome and this one dude (not the boyfriend, the ‘3rd wheel’) was knowledgeable and we were agreeing on most shit. i dropped a coin and it fell into some water and he reached for it. i was like ‘no its cool dude’ but he grabbed it from the puddle. i said ‘thanx man, youre a good soul’.

just then 2 crazy redneck white trashers walked up. one was a dude super skinny, wearing like a shirt for a bowling league in tennessee (no kidding) and he had a mullet and looked like a scumbag. he had a huge fat bitch with him. well he walked up and immediately says ‘a soul is a dead person…so youre basically saying hes dead’. i was so blown away by that ignorant comment i couldnt even respond. i thought about just saying ‘fuck you motherfucker’ but decided not to. it got quiet then which sucked. then the 3 somes food was ready and one dude grabbed it. he grabbed a cup of pop made of foam and somehow busted thru it with his finger and coke sprayed everywhere. we all kind of laughed. the chick tried to return the cup of pop for another but the lady in the window is a notorious bitch and she refused. so this chick threw the cup of coke into the garbage cause she was pissed and it sprayed a lil bit on this red neck. the chick said something like ‘that bitch wont give me another one [throws pop] sorry, im just really pissed [apologizing to redneck]’.

the redneck looked pissed but said nothing adn the 3 some left. then another dude walked up. this dude was real drunk, tho certainly so was i and the redneck. but this guy was a little more wasted. he started saying how he had been coming here drunk to eat for like 15 years. i said it was awesome and now me and this dude had struck up a conversation. the redneck butted in at some point and actually had the balls to scold me for swearing in front of this fat bitch who i guess was underage. i told the redneck ‘deal with it’. he kept saying how it was wrong and i kept saying louder and louder ‘deal with it!’. he kept talking and then i started to test him cause i felt like maybe this drunk dude would have my back a lil bit and i said ‘youll do nothing about it and youll like it’. and other arrogant shit. well basically then all our food was ready and i jetted out. i drove home and ate it and felt real tired. i took a shower and somehow got some strength back to stay up a few more hours and update teh site.

oh yeah. and dont ask whats up with this dude, i dont know.

Low Profile live at Fantasy Lounge
Friday July 9th
with After the Fight, 2/3 of the Burbanks and Drew Neely

I’d been looking forward to this show for a long time. It has finally come and gone. And I had a blast!!!!
I had a crazy week with work and all so it was nice to let loose and release some of that angst. No better way to do that than by playing a good live set. So I took off work around noon and did some errands, ate, chilled, jammed a lil to loosen up, showered, paced around my apartment aimlessly till it was time for me to start loading my car. As I was loading, the phone rang and my buddy Dave Mazur called so I invited him along to the show and he followed me there but I sort of lost him on the way. He caught up with me later tho. I got there right around 8:30. Everything was set up and pretty much ready to go. We all chilled, mingled and drank for awhile and then Drew Neely started up his set. He played a bunch of acoustic songs solo. Pretty good stuff. The Burbanks were up next. They played with Johnny on guitar and vocals and the always so lovely Betty on drums.
Marky was out of town so they played Local H style. They are always fun and I truly love these guys. They played ‘Where Did You Go’ and Satan walked up and took the vocals for it. He sang the last verse all demonic and death metal style. It was hysterical. This was our 5th time playing with them. Luv u Burbanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After the Fight played next. If u don’t know about these guys, get to know em. They rock and are making a great start. This was our first time playing with them but my second time seeing them. And so many people sporting the Burnside Bridge tshirt. I’ve got one and I was tempted to wear it but knew there would be at least 1 person with it on and there ended up being like 4 people with em on. hahahaha. thats great. Twinsy’s!!!!
We played last. Didn’t go on till around or past midnight I think. I’m not too sure. I hate playing last cuz u have to pace yourself drinking. Well, i guess u don’t have to. But we do. I drank just enough before and after we played so that I was feeling pretty fucking good all night. So when we play last, I get real anxious and can’t wait to go jam. It makes me a lil crazy. I’m not the most patient of people. But oh well. The good thing about playing last is that u can just keep playing on and on till people start leaving or they pull the plug on u.
So we used other peoples amps for the show. I used ATF Steve’s amp so thanks Steve!!!! It just made things much easier. Less equipment wasting space, allows me to be lazy and walk in with just 2 basses and my box o’ stuff and bag o’ shirts, no heavy amp to lug around, etc.

So our set was something like this:

Milwaukee
Zamboni
The Will to Kill
Ultraviolence
I’m Trying (originally by Face to Face)
Use Your Mind (originally by Guttermouth)
Hotboxed
What I Failed to Mention
All the Wrong Reasons
1000x (originally by Face to Face)
Radical New Idea
King of the Hill theme
American Nightmare (originally by the Misfits)
Folsom Prison Blues (originally by Johnny Cash)
Vampira (originally by the Misfits)
Studio Nightmare

I think thats about all of what we played. It felt real good. Blake brought us some shots of Jagr while we were playing. I practically stopped playing during the song to grab my shot. hahaha.
thanks Blake!!!!!
I drank for free after we played. All my drinks from then on were on the house. Pretty nice of em.
We gave out a bunch of CDs, stickers and tshirts. Rob printed up some real nice promo posters for the new album and gave em to us last night. We hung one up inside the place.
We got paid $50. We played rock paper scissors as usual for the cash. First I played Rob and he beat me so he got $20. Then I played Satan and he also beat me and got the other $20. And I got the 10 spot. hahahaha. I suck at that game. But its fun to play and we’ve been doing it since our early shows. I wonder what the record is of whose lost the most, won the most, etc. hahaha. Anyways. I had a blast. We’ll have to set up some more shows at this place. Both times were fun.
So thanks to Josh for booking us. The owner of the Fantasy Lounge and the lady who brought me all my drinks. After the Fight, Johnny and Betty, Drew Neely all for rocking with us. Scott Herschler. Deech. Dave Mazur, Tracy and Rachael. And everyone else there who watched our set. Also Dave Metko for taking pics and Bones. Thanks a ton!!!! I had a fun night.

Show #58: Fantasy Lounge, Chicago

Low Profile live at Fantasy Lounge
Friday September 26th
with Shooting Blanks and Burnside Bridge

Great fucking show all around. I had a blast.

It is 2:35am. I just got out of the shower but am feeling very fucking wasted. I drank many beers tonight and just got done smoking a bowl. Right on! I’ve got on the Lucy show cuz there isn’t much else on at this hour and I don’t have cable.

So we got this show from Matt from Shooting Blanks who got the show from Burnside Bridge. We ended up playing with Burnside at Memories a few weeks earlier and looked forward to playing with them again. Deech is still out of commission so I figured, me and Williams would split the Shooting Blanks set since we both have been doing fill in shows for them and it’d be fun. He agreed and we both chose the songs we’d jam with them.

For the Low Profile set, we busted out some songs we haven’t played live or practiced really in some time now. Think About It being one and Execution Style as the other. It jams though. I brought it up at practice and we jammed it after not playing it for a long time and thru it in the set.

So I showed up to the venue at about 8:15. Williams, Josh and Corey were all there. They were setting up the PA and shit. I noticed Dan’s car outside but he wasn’t in there when I walked in. I loaded my gear in and chilled a while. Dan and Matt walked in a while later. We all sat around and started drinking. Well, I started drinking. Everyone else seemed to get a lil head start on me.

Jonny from the Burbanks showed up. Hoser and Joe from Squared Off showed up. Weber and Scott from Ratbag. Bill, Ross and Andrew from the Powerknobs. It was like a big band fest. There was no turn out whatsoever really. We ended up playing for all band members that we r crew with and that made the show really special in a way. Some people would rip on it all and say it sucked but it was truly awesome. Thanks everyone who was there. It was intense fun for me!!!!!!

So 10:00 rolls around and Shooting Blanks r due up first with Williams starting the set with them. They race thru:

Another Chance
Wasted Time
Ignore Me
Simple Song
She Luvs Me Cuz I Rock

I sang along and took some pics of Satan165 playing with them. Then I took over on the bass and we played:

Knee Deep
Louder
Payback
Mindfuck
Sheila
Home Sweet Home (originally by Motley Crue)

Sheila was added. Since we had planned on covering Sheila as a surprise to Matt, Dan and Brey, I told Williams to avoid playing that song with them but I fell thru. After Mindfuck(which was dedicated to Josh), Matt was determined to play one more song and THEN Home Sweet Home so I asked what he had in mind and he said Sheila. I said “how bout Silly Goose???” and he said nope so we jammed Sheila. It rocked for sure. But u ruined our surprise damnit!!!! Nah. It’s all good. Everyone got to see that song twice. Hope u enjoyed it.
Brey got naked for a bit and it was a lil too much for me and was turning on everyone in the crowd so he had to cover up a lil.
Luv ya Brey!
No No! Too sexy!!! (if u watch SNL u may know what I’m talking about.)

Much thanks to Shooting Blanks for letting us come aboard for these past few shows. Much luv and respect to u guys. I can’t wait to see u guys with Deech back in the lineup. U know I’ll be there!!!!!!
It’s been a blast getting drunk and rowdy rocking on stage with y’all!

Burnside Bridge were up next. Corey was tuning up one guitar and a few people were yelling for him to play his Rickenbacker so he switched to please us all and tuned that one up to play instead. They rocked a real good set. We heckled with them over playing some Slayer and it was just a good time. Their songs rock! They all sing! They r just a cool band all around.
Again, much luv and respect to these guys. Thanks for providing PA and amps and making the show run smoothly.

Low Profile was up last. We played a real long set. We scrapped part of our set list and added a ton of other songs. I’m not even sure I’ll remember everything we played. But it was something like this:

Think About It
Execution Style
Chesterfield King (originally by Jawbreaker) for Ross!!!
En Guarde
What I Failed To Mention
All The Wrong Reasons
Sheila (originally by Shooting Blanks) for Matt, Dan and Brey!!! (w/ Weber and Matt on backups!!!)
(Misfits medley) featuring many back up singers!
I Turned Into a Martian
Vampira
Hybrid Moments
Astro Zombies
Return of the Fly
King of the Hill theme
Folsom Prison Blues (originally by Johnny Cash)
Green Corn (originally by NOFX) with Joe on vocals
Figure It Out (also with Joe on vocals)
Last Caress (Misfits)
Summertime (originally by Crimpshrine)
My Turn (originally by Squared Off) Hoser on vocals, Joe doing backups.

I think that was it. I may have missed something but oh well. It was a lot of fun.
Ross requested Hot Mom and a Jawbreaker cover so we did Chesterfield for him since he told me he listened to Bivouac on the way over to the show. Josh requested I Turned into a Martian by the Misfits so we played that and told everyone to just call out songs. Josh called out Skulls and Attitude a few times but we never did those. I also heard Spook City USA called out which is a pretty obscure but still good Fits song but we don’t know it. Sorry. Jessica called out She but that is an arm bender for Rob. Astrozombies was called out and we went into that. And then Return of the Fly so we went right into that as well. Glad to see so many Misfits fans out there. Burnside Bridge were using my mic for back ups. Props all the way!!!!!

I think we may have gotten My Turn right that time. Rob not included cuz the drums r all good to it. F#ii and then the G – A part. Got it!

It was a very fun set. I played most of it in my boxer briefs. Scott was a lil scared I may play fully naked but I didn’t. Weber did pull my undies down a lil but not to far to reveal my private parts.
Sorry ladies.

We chilled a while after we were thru and took our time loading out. I was exhausted and out of it. I’m gonna finish this bowl off and call it a night. Thanks everyone for coming out. Hope everyone had fun and got home ok. We’re not playing for a while. Check the site for upcoming shows and any other updates. Cya round.

Show #56: Memories, Chicago

I got involved with Squared Off and Smear Campaign back in March of this year. We were booked with Smear Campaign and got to know them — Cactus Matt offered me a gig that we ended up playing like 4 months later. I also met Hoser that night — his band (Squared Off) wasn’t playing then but he mentioned that he booked shows at a club called Memories. I had never heard of it. Later I came under the impression that it was located in the town of Cicero, I guess this was some confusion with the Street (Cicero Ave.) upon which this club sits. As a side note, I mention that this was my first meeting with Hoser. Unbeknownist to me, I had met him a year or 2 earlier when his previous band FID played at the Fireside Bowl with us as well (as well as bassist Dan, who at that time was musically unemployed, but is not in Smear Campaign to add a final twist).

I often pressured Matt and Hoser to get a show going at Memories with just our 3 bands. Well eventually Hoser came thru and although the bill was longer, I knew this was the show I was waiting for and luckily we were able to take it. It was to be a party for Hosers b-day party which was to occur 3 days later. Smear Camp was not on the bill, but Squared Off and Low Profile were accompanied by out of towners The Tradesman (an Oi! outfit), Burnside Bridge (who we were at the time booked with at another show in total coincidence) and I Attack, another local group who I knew Squared Off had played with before.

I arrive with Hilger, Lisa and Rob and we were the first ones there. I had been to Memories once before to see Squared Off and Smear Campaign (with original Smear Camp bassist Wally). The place seemed a bit cramped (but was that due to the facilities or just a massive crowd, I wondered). I also remembered that they had a decent stage going. When I walked in there were maybe 5 locals there, a huge pool table in the way, and no stage. There was some wood piled up in the back though…hmmmm….

I think it was Corey from Burnside Bridge who was one of the first other people to arrive. He knew as much as me as far as what to do (nothing) and we decided to wait for the big boss (Hoser) to call the shots. He soon arrived and I realized that the stage was collapseable. They have large sheets of plywood (carpeted) and tons of milk crates out back to support it. Joe from Squared Off, myself and an old gentlemen with what appeared to be 1 tooth total threw down the crates and assembled things as well as moving the pool table and a bunch of other shit out of the way. The lineup was soon decided and Rhyno attempted to give us the ‘bad news’ that we had to play first — which I gladly accepted. That night the slot actually hurt us, as a much huger crowd showed up later on. Some people had already showed up tho: Weber from Ratbag Hero (he said he came to see Burnside Bridge though and had no idea we were playing, although I had given him a flyer for the show the week before at Bigwig), Hilger’s sister Amber and her friend Laura (pictured here and here with Rub-a-Dub doggie, who is getting some groupie love). Betty and Johnny from the Burbanks showed up, but late and they missed our set. Also of course Cactus Matt was there, and later Jimmy, Smear Camps drummer and Chris their ex-2nd guitarist as well.

At some point while killing time before 9:30 when we were scheduled to go on, I was outside and a person I later identified as the singer/bassist for The Tradesman rolled up (onto the sidewalk) in a vintage Silver Vespa scooter and matching old school silver helmet. He tried to rip on it and say it was a piece of shit but I thought it was pretty tight. He said he was just coming from some scooter convention or something. I asked if he rode the Vespa all the way from Erie, Pennsylvania and he laughed and said no.

We went on to a thin crowd and opened with a sure fire way to alienate the crowd: an 11 minute, 8 part medley. Including #7 ‘A Barell With Poles’ which consists of only guitar and vocals. I wasn’t feeling the show and if you read the previous 10 show reviews, I don’t think I say that even once. I don’t think anyone there was feeling the shit at all. I don’t fucking know.

After the set Hilger changed shirts (so did I, as always, it was pretty sweaty). We stepped outside and his shirt was unbuttoned and it was flapping in the wind and I scored this pic, then I made fun of him for trying to cop such a ‘sexy pose’. Later on Rob noticed some chick with the low-riding jeans that rode a bit low and the ass crack was exposed. Now I’m often known in many circles as a Paparatizi for taking crazy pics of people without their permission. I was at a festival in tha RG recently and snapped a pic of another similarly not-that-hot chick with a thong fully exposed. I took a pic of that and almost got into a little trouble, physically, but got away with the pic. Well anyways, I felt obligated to take a pic of this ass crack and I was nervous to use the flash, althuogh I knew I needed it. I had had this same problem with the thong pic, I took one real quick and checked it and it was mostly useless (even after I brightened it later on my comp), so I immediatley took another with the flash — and thats how I got myself into trouble. Well in this case I bitched out and I only have the one pic, which is barely visable after being lightened by my super high-tech comp warez. Enjoy.

There were 4 more bands after us and I stayed until the end. The Tradesman played traiditional punk/Oi, with the guitar solos and everything it reminded me of Warzone. I attack was more old school thrashing punk rock, alot of smashing mid tempo beats. Very loud. Squared Off was great as usual. We played our Squared Off cover ‘My Turn’ for the 2nd time at a show with them. Squared Off then played it in their own set and Hoser made a point to not only point out to me, but to rub my face in it, that I was playing 1 note 1/2 step off. I made a mental note on that and Hilger looked and realized it to. Ny bad dude. I didn’t drink at all at the show because I got pretty wasted the night before had to get up ‘early’ for practice before the show. The funny thing is that as much as I say I wasn’t feeling shit, I’m sure all the other bands did and I’ll bet the whole crowd did too. Weber stressed to me that it was the best of the 2 or 3 sets hes seen us play. I guess we played well enough. I’m going to cut this review now before I rip on myself more. Good show.

Low Profile live at Memories
Saturday August 30th
w/ Squared Off, I Attack, the Tradesmen and Burnside Bridge

We practiced at 5 on this day and went thru the set real quick. Then me Williams and Lisa went and made copies, scanned photos, updated the site, filled out the CD inserts and smoked weed to kill time before we had to leave for Memories.

We were the first ones there. But soon after some of the members of Burnside Bridge arrived. We just sat around and chilled. I ordered a Rolling Rock and sat at the bar. Then decided to play some songs on the jukebox cuz it was way too quiet and we had some time to kill.
This jukebox is awesome. I played some Crue, Scorpions live, Halen, Bob Seger, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc. It has a lot of good shit in it so I was amused.

So my sister Amber and her friend Laura show up. Jessica showed up. Weber from Ratbag Hero shows up to see Burnside Bridge but got to see 4 other awesome bands so that was very cool. Matt, Jimmy and Chris show up. Hoser walked in and I walked up, wished him a happy 12th 21st birthday and gave him 10 pics I’d picked up when I went to the guitar shop. I wanted to get him a pick holder and give it to him full but they didn’t have any. Oh well. It was lookin good though cuz the place was fillin up and the drinks started to flow.

Hoser, Joe and Williams started getting shit organized. Setting up the stage and the PA and monitors and all. I just sat back, drank a few and chilled. So awhile after that, Williams comes up and says that we play first which was cool with the three of us. So we helped Rob load in and we had Hoser and Rhyno hook us up since we were using their amps. Our set was something like this:

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8
Sex Party
Excited To Die
Folsom Prison Blues (originally by Johnny Cash)
48
Hot Mom
My Turn (originally by Squared Off)

After Excited To Die, I remember saying something that our set was almost done and Cactus Matt yelled out that we’d only been playing 20 minutes and to me it seemed like an hour. It was kinda weird. I wasn’t tired or anything, time just seemed real weird that whole night.

Folsom was received well as it always is. My sister asked both me and Williams if we’d play it so we thru it in the set. Weber told me that this was the best time he’d seen us out of like 3 or 4 times and then said that seeing us play the song 48 really made his day. So that was real cool to hear. My Turn was good and fast and exciting. But we later learned that we play a change a lil wrong. Hoser pointed it out to us when they played it correctly during their set. Sorry bout that.
Johnny and Betty walked up to me while I was standing around after our set. Johnny says “nice set” and I’m like oh yeah, thanks. Then he gives me a big hug and says “sorry, we totally missed u guys. but we could hear u while we were driving around trying to park” Thanks a lot u 2. No problem though cuz u have to sit thru our set this coming Sunday at Bigwig. Just kidding. Don’t even trip about it. We listened to the CD u gave Williams while in my car chiefing.

Burnside Bridge were up next. They had real nice gear. The one guitarist had a bunch of pedals all nice on a board and played a left handed vintage Rickenbacker. Josh, the other guitarist played a real nice SG. And the chick bassist played a nice black on black Ernie Ball bass. Props all around. Their sound was good. I liked their songs and got into them but we went out for a session during the end of their set and ended up chilling outside cuz it felt so good after playing a hot and tiring set. We later walked in and watched the Tradesmen who totally rocked and impressed me a lot. Very fast, energetic street punk. They sing about the working blue collar class and about the union. Williams and I later talked with the lead singer/bassist and he said he was a union pipefitter. Oh and they r from Erie, PA and said that Memories was the smallest place they’ve played in a while but they had fun anyways and after their set they were ready to get drunk. Good luck with the rest of the tour guys.

I Attack were next. I knew that Squared Off had played with these guys at least a few times. They were great. Super fast, high energy, yelling punk rock. Glad I got to play with and finally see these guys. They gave Hoser a pinata for his birthday. It was pretty funny. It was soon smashed and in pieces all over the floor. They ended their set with an Ozzy cover and the singer didn’t know all the words but improvised and I thought he was gonna collapse on the floor. It was so fucking hot in there at that point.

Squared Off got were up last. Hoser was pretty drunk at this point. People were buying him shots and he was just havin a good ole time. Their set was great. They opened with Made In America and had a bunch of us right up front singing right along. They played My Turn and Hoser made sure to point out what we play wrong. OOPS!!
They played Two Way Street, Sue You Got, Porcelain, I Want One More, etc. They covered We Can Dance and then played Seeing Red by Minor Threat with either a very hoarse Joe singing or his vocals were just quiet cuz we couldn’t hear him. Oh well. It was good anyways.

It was a real fun night. Thanks everyone involved.
Happy 12th 21st birthday Hoser!!!!!!!
