Show #46: Fireside Bowl, Chicago

This is our 11th time playing here, but first in 2 years. i found myself telling alot of people that statistic because i myself am amazed by it. this is my personally 13th time there, i played there twice with C.F.D., my first band.

so we got there and found out we were playing 2nd of 4 bands. i think a lot of people (hilger said it and i agreed) that reality was a little off kilter that day, either from partying over the weekend and/or the daylight savings bullshit that ‘the man’ uses to steal an hour from us. how dare he!

so bill knobs of The Powerknobs showed up and we had a drink while the 1st band played. smear campaign was the headliner but they were soundchecking early before any of the bands. i see 1st thing that the singer is wearing like a softball jersey that says ‘south cicero’. now as if it wasnt crazy enough to be representin cicero, hes representina small part of it. that is definately down. they came off stage after their soundcheck and we start talking to them all (actually, i never did speak even once, nor did any of us, to the guitarist. he was definately awesome but just did his own thing i guess. so i go right up to the bassist, hes wearning a flannel shirt, and some bgi ass fuckin boots, like construction boots. so i just asked him, ‘hey dude, are you a fucking construction worker or what?’. he said that no, with a laugh, that he was a mechanic. i asked him for a smoke and he pulled out a very rare cigerette. he had pall mall menthol. i related a story to everyone about my dead grandfather. he smoked cigars but sometimes he would buy cigerettes — pall malls. but he didnt smoke them, he would lite them and just drive around with the thing burning in his mouth. they were definately unfiltered, but they arent shorties like lucky strikes. so anyways, the members of smear campaign are very cool, very friendly, were all laughing together.

bill knobs and i go have a beer, didnt even step out to the see the 1st band. they are called scissors. pop punk from elmhurst, or so i was told (what i was told as far as their home, im quite sure it was pop punk. i could hear it in the bar). and we were next. the set felt really good, wasnt very tired. it was real cold in the place, hilger and i were the only 2 with shorts on. i think it kept me awake. i kept wiping my head with a towel but wasnt that sweaty. the set was done quick and we gave out 10 cds to people we didnt know in about 20 seconds. they we hit the bar. the bartender thought our last song (‘summertime’ by crimpshrine) was fifteen (same singer, jeff ott) so i gave him props for being so close.

moto played, they had some wicked guitars. their singer/guitarist had an ampeg guitar which are rare. the one he had was old but looked pretty awesome. smear campaign played and matt was pretty drunk. he took his shirt off first. i can understand that, youre hot up there and sweating. then he took off his pants. well i was only out there to take some pics and then i went back to the bar. but i guess that he took a shit in his drawers on stage. thats pretty sick. i dont even know what to say about that.

matt from smear campaign was in there getting tanked in the bar afterwards. he buddy who he called momo was there, we were talking about the dirtiest suburbs. i said riverside, i made momo guess and he named dixon, i brought up robbins, but the worst is ford heights (ford city?) fuck if i know what its called. i aint going there. momo said how he used to sell those steaks door to door, and he said the trick is, ‘youre not selling the meal, youre selling the deal’. sound advice. then a guy named jon from windy city punk, i guess they are a label. he said that moto was signed with them and he saw me take pics. he wanted to get a copy of the pics and of course i obliged him. i emailed the 4 i took for the site (see them here). there was this one other dude, i had seen him talking to bill eariler. i figured he was his friend. he looked kind of weird, had dark skin…i dont know. so me and bill are sitting at a table and this guy starts asking me what kind of guitars i play and shit. he said that he missed our set, he got there late. and hes grilling me about guitars, amps, effects…i could keep up with his ass though. we started even spitting some shit about ohm’s law and other electrical theories. he told me he was a veteran, and that he could get military surplus tubes, which they used in old radios but work fine in an amp. thats insane. eventually he left and i asked bill who he was. he said he had no fucking clue, that the guy had come up to him to and grilled him about guitars too. i saw a mohican punk kid talking to some other dudes and i heard him ask them ‘have you ever heard of skokie’? refering to the band. i heard it an the dude said no. i said that i had. so we talked for a while about skokie, i said that they had a big ass black dude singing which of course is very fucking odd. i saw skokie play with strung out and straight faced several years ago also at the fireside. i told him about the show and he had one of ours cds, which he got from hilger after the show. he talked about a couple of bands he was in, we started talking about oi! music. i had to bring up skrewdriver becasue they are pretty cool although they are fucking nazis, its hardcore, crazy shit which hobo platis had gotten me into. ive downloaded a couple of songs and read about the singer and the band, theyre nuts. anyways, i said that i wasnt into the nazi shit. so i asked him ‘are you a nazi?’ and he said no, in fact he said he was jewish! hes from skokie of course. so we all had a good laugh at that. and right now i am listening to ‘nigger ( i hate your face)’ on repeat because of this dude. he was fucking cool. if youre reading this, holler at me!

The sound man, stan, was a class act. the fireside sound must have improved because it sounded great in there, better than our last few gigs. i was really surprised. and when i was going to leave i had to holler at stan who was at the bar also now. i also saw sitting next to him jon from windy city punk and another guy who i assume to be another windy city punk guy, he had a british accent. he broke the news to me, he said “hey man, did you see that guy up there? he shit himself” but in a british accent. i was shocked. thats insane.

i eventually went home, ate, passed out till like 2 am, woke up cleaned my house, walked to the gas station to get a soda in a fucking sleet storm and now its 5 am. so im posting this and going to bed. hey hilger, make sure you cover anything i forgot. it was another awesome show.

Low Profile Live
Sunday April 6th
Fireside Bowl
with Scissors, Moto, and Smear Campaign
Alright.  This show was very cool and fun.  Bill Knobs and Jessica both showed up so thanks to them right off the bat. also eorl and his old friend.   We met up at Rob’s at 4:30 and loaded up and drove to the Fireside.  We loaded in and found out that we played second.  Smear Campaign were on stage setting up while we were loading in.  They played a sound check and then got off stage and took their equiptment off which was kinda weird.  They said they were playing last and were gonna go get drunk first.  And I’m sure they play better when their drunk.  At least for the singer.
So Scissors play first.  They were poppy punk type shit.  I watched like one and a half songs and got bored so went to go hang out.
We were up next.  We represented to the fullest.  And we’re down with Smear Campaign.  They were representin Cicero which is in the 708 so u guys r cool with us.  And don’t think that if your not from the 708 we’ll hate u or whatever.  I think people think that sometimes.  Its not the case.  Be cool to Low Profile and we’ll be down for life.  So our set was:
Kamakazi 9-11
Brown
Character Profile
The Limitation
Walter Mander
Chimerical
Grudge
Hot Mom
Summertime  (originally by Crimpshrine)
We rocked the fucking house.  Jessica was our loudest fan as usual yelling out Low Profile and 708 thru out the show. The drummer and singer from Smear Campaign were digging us too.   Thanks for the support guys.
Moto was up next.  They played with their leathers on and everything.  They rocked for sure.  And I mean straight up rock.  4 piece with 2 guitars.  Their first song was called Metal Man.  It was kinda goofy but alright.
Then Smear Campaign played.  They were fucking insane.  The drummer was probably the funnest to watch.  He thrashed around like a wild man.  Props to the bassist.  He plays with no pick and all fingers.  They were wild.  They had a song called Hulk For President.  It was funny as hell.  Williams had to sing along on the big choruses.  Matt shit his pants at one point during the show and proceeded to wipe while still on stage and then got very close to being fully naked.
So then we hung out a bit.  The singer from Smear Campaign offered us a show which we took on the spot.  They were very nice and fun to talk to and hang out with.  We got paid a whopping $15.00 which is cool cause we can split it easily 3 ways.  Eric blew his cash on a last free drink.  I blew mine on a healthy McDonalds breakfast the morning after the show.

Show #32: Fireside Bowl, Chicago

I promoted this Sunday show the night before on WNUR’s late night show, “Fast and Loud”. I got on the air and spit game for about 5 minutes interupted. We played with Fun People from Argentina, Fin Fang Foom from Chapel Hill, N.C., the Perps and the Fightbacks from Rockford. Talked to them and they said they played at “That One Place” 15 times. Played AFI style fast punk but more generic and less energetic. They knew James and everyone from Rockford. Fin Fang Foom was 3 piece and very cool. They played chaotic noisecore. Like Hash Brown but even crazier and more aggressive. I asked if they knew the Squirell Nut Zippers and they said no. The drummer told me he heard that they made $60,000 for one gig that they played for the govenor. We opened with a Perps song and they were all on stage singing along. Jamey rodied and sang along for “American Fun”. I was sore from Friday but still thrashed hard and it didn’t hurt at all on stage. Of course I had the fresh tattoo which I was trying to keep clean and the door- person chick was talking to me and Jamey and she flicked a cigerette and it stuck to my arm and burned me a bit like a 1/2″ from the tattoo. Stupid bitch. The Perps were true rock stars and I was on stage constantly singing along. They played “Plastered” as an encore and it was great. They all wore jail type suits for Halloween (I guess). Awesome show over all.

Show #30: Fireside Bowl, Chicago

Alright well, I’m finally taking the time to write a review of one of our shows. I’m better to write this one since Rob and Eric left pretty muchly right after we played. So anyways, this show was really awesome. We played with some really awesome bands. The first band was called USV, the United States Villains. They were from somewhere in Wisconsin. They were a 4 piece with a frontman. They were very noisecore. I loved it. Lots of yelling and noisy changes. We traded with the singer of the band one of our CD’s for a 10″ of their band. Its pretty damn good. We played next. We opened with Horror Hotel by the Misfits. Eric wanted to play it cause every band had a Misfits sticker on something. Nyk came to see us and we made amends. See the hate letter page on our website to read his letter to Eric. We’re cool with him now though. We played Excessive for him. I ran around far from the stage with my bass on. My wireless system is awesome. Anyone who plays guitar should play wireless. It lets u move around freely and mine rarely fucks up. We got real wild and sweaty. We didn’t really bring anyone to see us but the audience was very amused and gave us mad props. It was a blast as usual. I personally think we played the best at this show but I know I’ll say that after the next one and the one after that…………………..blah blah blah………………… Next was FID. They are from Chicago. This was their 15th time playing the Fireside. They were alright. Typical Chicago style punk rock Fighters, Hitmen style. I traded CD’s with the bassist/singer. He was pretty cool. The CD is pretty good. They played every song but 1 and ended with a Fugazi cover of Merchandise. They fucked it up but said that they just learned it yesterday. Then the Vice Dolls played. I’ve heard of them before. I think they said they are from Indiana. They are a 4 piece with a girl lead singer. They rocked. Very fast, aggressive punk rock. I liked their energy. Every song is very fast. I talked with the girl singer. She was very tattooed and very cool. I traded CD’s with her as well. Next was the headlining band, Frontside. They are from somewhere in Illinois. They are a 5 piece with 2 frontmen who both get really crazy on stage and scream great. The bass player used to be in Suburban Refugee (RIP). My old band Socially Unacceptable played with them 4 times and knew them very well so he remembered me from that. Small world. They are extremely noisy and totally use noisy changes with lots of screaming over all the noise. Fuckin awesome. I totally dug them. Hopefully I can get the chance to play with them again. I had to buy a CD from them. The drummer said that they couldn’t give any away and that they had to make all the money for them. Oh well. Pretty damn cool that I went home with 3 new CD’s from some really cool bands. That was it. We got paid $10. I went home and puked from all the heat and loud noise. Then I smoked a nice bong and went to bed.

Show #29: Fireside Bowl, Chicago

We had taken quite a while off before this show — about 2 months. We had very many new songs and after a bit of revising, we ended up deleting the only two old songs in the set. We opened with ‘Broken Ties’ and went into ‘Show Me Your Gun’ by Straight Faced. I had been lifting weights and skating every night for two weeks before this and it definitely paid off. I barely sweat and didn’t get totally exhausted. I was very nervous before hand and was standing on stage waiting to get the OK to start from the sound person. (Who by the way was a bitch. I tried to be as friendly as possible before the show and she was outright mean.) For some reason, she left my mic on. Bad move on her part. She probably should have cut me off at some point, but I started talking to the small crowd and the Hilger whispered for me to ‘start ranting’. So I started to dis Mc Donalds and the people that eat it. A bunch of the other bands were feeding their faced before the show. I always play shows after not eating anything the whole day, much less McDonalds 10 minutes before I play. I would probably shit in my pants. Everyone was kind of shocked as usual and just stayed quiet. The Dorks were set to play second. I saw them years ago open for 88 Finger Louie or the Bollwevils and they were a 3 piece with a singing drummer and they sucked. Now they had 2 guitars and I’ll bet they still sucked but I left anyways. I was told that Screeching Weasel was going to come out and use the headlining bands equipment (the Jackie Papers, on Panic Button Records, owned by Ben Weasel) and play 5 new songs. I hate sticking around after I play and even if the Beatles was coming on I would have left anyways. It might have been bullshit anyways. Guess I’ll never know now.

Show #28: Fireside Bowl, Chicago

We played this show with Whippersnapper who is famous for their cover of the National Lampoon’s Vacation theme song, “Holiday Road” which appears on the Fearless Records compilation Punk Bites II. We were excited to be playing with a band of this caliber and we basically got the show considering that this was our 7th time and we must have impressed Brian (who books the shows). I cannot remember the name of the first band. The bass player and guitarist switched a few times and the whole band was awful. The singer had a broken arm and they played a mix of shitty pop punk, shitty ska and just shit in general. I started yelling shit and they just looked terrible. At one point I yelled in between songs during a silence, “Feeling a bit nervous?” That seemed to shake them up a bit. They played some songs with 3 horns and they played a ska song that was totally off tempo. After the song, the singer said, “Maybe we should have practiced that one a little more”. Me and a few others yelled all kinds of shit after that. We played right after them and I stole a box of picks that the bass player had left on stage.

Whippersnapper was very tight and awesome. Hilger and Rob both bought the CD and they could easily be a Lagwagon or Strung Out only cooler and without the lame following. They deserve to be rich and famous.

I taunted the crowd plenty and got real crazy. More than a few people asked why I was such a dick to the crowd and there is no answer. Because I can, I guess.

Show #27: Fireside Bowl, Chicago

The Fireside must not have paid their heat bill because it was freezing outside and inside on this day. To top it off I was very sick and light headed. I laid down for a while and tried to rest but I felt like shit. As soon as a started playing, I felt great and forgot. I was still kind of drunk off this sickness and at one point I closed my eyes and I kind of blacked out or something. My throat was killing me and I fell right into the drums. Rob just grabbed me and pushed me off. It was fun but I sure was glad to get home and chill.

Show #21: Fireside Bowl, Chicago

This was a very important show in that we met our good friends the Perps. They are a very fun band and very fun guys. They approached us straight up and gave us props and we gave them theres’ (much deserved). As always, Paul of this band was drinking vodka out of a Snapple bottle. He is so nice its not even funny. They later got us two very far away shows in Rockford and also in Homewood. Last Man Out played decent ska but it was pretty diluted punk ska and a lot of backpack wearing skanking kids showed up which generally makes me nauseated. The Thumbs from Baltimore were touring and played absolute noise not unlike Farm Team. I gave them total props.

Show #18: Fireside Bowl, Chicago

We played this show with Alastair and This Side Up. As usual I was a bit nervous before the show and opted to take a walk during the other bands sets. But before any one played I had quite a run in with a member of (I believe) Alastair. First he saw my Jackson and thought it was very heavy metal or something. I was jamming on stage before the show and he asked me to play some ‘unnatural harmonics’. For non-guitarists, there are two kinds of harmonics: natural and artificial. Clearly, by unnatural he meant artificial, but I had never heard that before and he just didn’t know what the fuck he was talking about. He later offered to teach me how to bend the ends of my strings at the top of my neck into pentograms. I think that that actually would be pretty cool, although I do not believe that he actually knew how to do so and there was also very little slack to do it with. All in all, he tried his best to impress me. The icing on the cake was when he saw a sticker we had put on the ground. He told me that if the Fireside management saw that, we would be banned forever and if we were smart we should peel it off. I told him that I figured I could handle the situation myself and that he shouldn’t worry about it. I didn’t see his band but I’m sure that they sucked.

Show #15: Fireside Bowl, Chicago

This show was with the Circus — a band we had played with before. In short, they had insulted us and also started a fight they couldn’t finish with a wild metal band due to their frontman’s antics. I was ready to confront them and fight if need be. As we waited outside for the doors to be unlocked, their singer saw a sticker that had been freshly put up about 1 minute ago by Hilger. He commented to one of his band members, not knowing that we were the band, “Low Profile…wait a minute…I remember this band”. Then he turned to us and I said that that was us. He seemed shocked and said nothing else. During their set he wore the same crazy outfit and sweated up a storm. Musically, I cannot deny that they were tight, original and overall professional. I had no respect for their singer because of his past bullshit and his ‘shocking’ antics which did not fly with me. He punched himself a few times and I stood in the near empty club right in front of the stage egging him on for more self-destruction and other taunts. He ignored me of course and tried to impress and bunch of girls who had come to see us and eventually jumped into the ‘crowd’ (what little there was) and landed on them. The rest of the set of uneventful.

During our set, we played ‘All Hell Breaks Loose’ last by the Misfits especially for him. Hilger commented live that we love the Misfits and we will play them every fucking time whether anyone likes it or not. Not suprisingly, they were not up to the challenge and stood quietly in the back then left.

The other bands were mixed. Farm Team was a local band who played absolute noise and I really dug them. The Aldermen were 1950’s or something and the guitarist even pulled up outside on a huge chopper. He had plenty of tattoos and a greased handlebar mustache and hair.

Show #10: Kraft Bowl, Chicago

At this show a lot of people showed up and we got paid a lot — $71. I’m sure it was supposed to be $70 but was miscounted by Washburn who put on the show. I remember him holding a huge stack of bills and just peeling off so many that I couldn’t believe it. When he paid me I thanked him then we hugged which was weird. I was very grateful to him for putting on the show and it was just very successful overall.

Instead of doing a half assed job on the sound, we paid a bit more and got a great sound man named Bo. He made it sound great and set up and tore down VERY fast. The PA speakers were not very steady and were stacked up. Once of twice, they were wobbling and he warned us through his talkback mic to be careful. I admonished the crowd to do so and they didn’t listen. During “Problem Solved” the whole fucking thing fell over which could damage the speaker and also the person or persons beneath it. Luckily neither happened and Farmer caught the speakers and it didn’t happen again.

Tony Perry got a huge bass stack for this show and Joe got a crazy Dean Flying-V. They sure did have some great shit except for one thing — Joe had no guitar amp. Now don’t ask me why you would go to a show and not even bring an amp because I don’t know. Fact of the matter is that Joe technically did not (and probably still does not) have a guitar amp. So he asked to use mine. I had borrowed a bad ass Valvestate Marshall half stack from a good friend of mine named Andy and I was really trying to protect the thing. I told him that it wasn’t mine to lend out, much less that Andy might come to the show and if he saw that I let him use it, he would probably be pissed. He said that he would talk to him or pay him or something but I said fuck it and just let him use it. Its this type of unprofessionalism that made Pie in the Sky never live up to their potential and eventually stop playing gigs. Later on Half Stachon played for which Joe plays bass. Of course, he did not have a bass so he asked Hilger for his. We were both real pissed at this point but he gave it to him anyways. They could barely even finish a song. Mike came out and sang Misfits with us and the crowd went wild. He had on the full Danzig garb and eye makeup. Awesome as usual.
